In light of the horrific shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue, we are seeing this Saturday's Breakfast and Discussion through a different lens and our focus has changed. As Rabbi Johanna says, we are practicing "planned happenstance" as she and Bryn are prepared to facilitate our dialogue in whichever direction we lead them.
Please come for breakfast November 3rd and stay to discuss what is in your heart and on your mind. We can discuss how it feels to be Jewish when events like this happen. We can explore ways to ensure the safety of everyone in our community. We can be there simply to support one another. And to our parents with youngsters in community Sunday school; we know that emotions are high and security a top concern. If you need community now more than ever... we are here for you.

What Would Moses Do?
Our Adult Learning evening on November 11, 7:00 pm is entitled "What Would Moses Do?"
Led by Rabbi Johanna, we explore Reform Responsa literature as it would apply to contemporary questions and challenges such as ethics in business, family, society, medicine, and scientific advancement.
We will be moving our exploration of the historic platforms of Reform Judaism to this literature as it applies rabbinic ethical decision making to present day questions.
This event will be held at a private home.

Calling all TBT Writers of Prose and Poetry!
Come to a planning meeting on November 27, 10:00 am to discuss the format of the Writers' Forum scheduled for Erev Shabbat March 22, 2019. At the Forum in March, we anticipate that the TBT writers will briefly read something he/she wrote followed by panel and audience questions and discussion.
The March event format is flexible and open to change based on the preferences we hear from you at the November 27 meeting.

We are happy to report that the board has finished working on its goals for this coming year with a focus on member engagement and organizational development.
One of our most important goals for the congregation is to develop a special TBT High Holiday Prayer book (Machzor) and songbook. Rabbi Hershenson and Alex Charney Cohen, ritual committee chair, are looking for members to join their subcommittee to help develop the format, write a little, edit a lot, and price and produce the prayer booklets. Please email Rabbi or Alex if you're interested in joining this fun and interesting project!
In addition, the ritual committee will soon begin planning a series of special Shabbat and holiday services with temple members of all ages participating from different segments of our community. Imagine a sweet service prepared and presented by the Sunday school students and their parents. Another with the COJY kids or the BBYO teens. Or another involving new members, the men's group or mahjong ladies.
For our organizational development goals, the board plans to address future board positions, revisit our bylaws, and determine whether to hire an administrative assistant. Our last goal is to expand our budget planning and have it finalized well before the end of the fiscal year.
The board is dedicated to the success of our temple and the satisfaction of our congregation. Our work keeps us busy and productive, yet it pales against the backdrop of the true meaning of our community. When one of our own grieves or hurts so do we all. We supported Terry and Gary as they made the most difficult journey of their 47 years together. We called and cooked. Visited and encouraged. Laughed and cried. Held hands and held Terry to bolster her strength for Gary. We gave as much of ourselves as they both could accept in our efforts to ease their pain. Now, with Gary's passing, our community will continue to comfort Terry as her new life takes shape. Now that's what really matters.

Divrei Tikvah

As the month of November ushers in the colder nights and crisp, sunny days, of Autumn, I find myself waking from the stupor of loss and and existential angst stirred up by the death of our friend and Temple Beth Tikvah founding member, Gary Reynolds. It was just May 20
th
that a quorum of us cheered Gary on as he earned his eighth ceramic mug for his impressive finish in Pole, Pedal, Paddle. A month and a half later we all learned about his rare and aggressive brain cancer. And three months later we buried Gary, promising to ourselves we would do our best to comfort Terry as she comes to terms with the immense loss of her lifelong love.
Viktor Frankl wrote in Man's Search for Meaning that a person's "suffering is similar to the behavior of gas. If a certain quantity of gas is pumped into an empty chamber, it will fill the chamber completely and evenly, no matter how big the chamber. Thus suffering completely fills the human soul and conscious mind, no matter whether the suffering is great or little. Therefore the "size" of human suffering is absolutely relative."
Frankl's observation suggests that we need to proactively "fill our chamber" with pleasant experiences, intimate interpersonal interactions, and purpose for being so that there is less space for the grief and anger to expand. We can live even when death and disease are present in our experience.
Ultimately I think Temple Beth Tikvah, itself, is a manifestation of the shared effort of individuals in our community to create a venue in which we can practice noticing and celebrating life's profundity and pleasure as well as hold space when loved ones among us need to be reassured that the pain and suffering they are experiencing in a given moment does not preclude the existence of compassionate presence and purpose. Our mission is to celebrate the rites of the Jewish calendar in their season, engage in lifelong learning and reflection rooted in the sacred literature of our ancestors, and build a loving community that cares for its members and humanity at large. To that end, I believe part of our healing process in the wake of Gary's death is to attend to our shared efforts to create safe, sacred space and a meaningful way of being in the world.
In coming weeks Temple Beth Tikvah's leaders offer events, programs, and practices to facilitate our community building.
- During the first Shabbat morning in November, Adult Learning/Connections will facilitate a workshop during which we will have the opportunity to share with one another the blessings and curses we have experienced trying to build a multigenerational Jewish community in an age of distraction. Following time for listening to one another's stories we will break up into small groups to brainstorm strategies for building Jewish community in the world we live in today.
- Our Adult Learning evening this month is entitled "What Would Moses Do?" We move our exploration of the historic platforms of Reform Judaism to Reform Responsa literature. This literature applies a rabbinic ethical decision making model to contemporary questions and challenges such as ethics in business, family, society, medicine, and scientific advancement.
Of course we will meet for Shabbat celebration, Torah study, feeding the hungry, as well as November's annual Interfaith Network of Central Oregon Thanksgiving service and pie fest. There are also committees engaged in ongoing work strategizing and preparing future programs and initiatives as well as tending to our institutional health and growth.
Feeling down? Feeling like you need to engage in something meaningful outside your day in and day out concerns? Attend! Get involved! Life happens. Our task is to build a vibrant foundation that can withstand the storms while sheltering us when we feel vulnerable. The Talmud says: It is is not up to us to finish the project, neither do we have the right to abstain from engaging.

Social Action Update

Our October 5 build for Habitat For Humanity was a huge success! The Habitat crew loved the progress we made and our volunteers got a huge sense of accomplishment and a good dose of fun, especially in handling power tools. Burt Litman and Jeanne Freeman, Steve and Char Dimond, Bob Pollack, Steve Katz, Ralph Uri, Mel Siegel, Ed and Lynne Connelley participated. We look forward to future builds with Habitat. Thank you to our volunteers!
Please contact Lynne by 11/26 to participate in the Assistance League's Secret Santa program in which we purchase and wrap in gift bags items from low income seniors' wish lists. The gifts will be anonymously delivered to senior care facilities in Redmond, Bend and LaPine.

Youth Group Happenings 
Fisher Isenberg
We are Shalom Teva BBYO #5029, the Jewish youth group of Bend, Oregon. Our chapter is part of the Evergreen Region. BBYO is the leading pluralistic teen movement aspiring to involve more Jewish teens in more meaningful Jewish experiences. As a chapter, we participate in community service, fun events, team bonding activities that help us grow closer together, and events that teach us about our Jewish heritage. BBYO and Shalom Teva provides our members with a way to connect with each other and make lifelong friends along with providing a Jewish experience from the post B'nai Mitzvot adolescence into adulthood. One goal of our chapters is to provide a safe and enriching environment for the teens involved in this organization.

Taizé Service
Next Taizé: November 1st
All TBT members are invited to Taizé - an evening of Interfaith prayerful meditation, peace, and silence. Taizé services are held the first Thursday of each month, October through May, 7:00 p.m. at St. Clare's Chapel, St. Francis Catholic Church, 2450 NE 27th St. in Bend, OR.
