PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Dear Ladies,
Well, we made it through our first Club Day together! It was touch and go for a few minutes, but everything turned out all right. Thanks to Arlene Johnson for such an inspiring presentation. We wish we all had her energy and adventurous spirit!
Thanks again to Lorraine Feliciano for keeping our a/v system, website, and Facebook working and updated. Lorraine has told me that she will be retiring from this position come June. She has worked tirelessly over the last ten years to keep us technologically up to date and to keep our website humming along. So, as well as Co-Chairs for Yankee Doodle Fair, we are on the lookout for someone who can take over Lorraine's position as Webmaster/Technical Support for the club. Please keep your eyes and ears open for someone who is up for the task!
By the time you read this Bulletin, our grant application form will be uploaded to the website and the press release, thanks to Gloria Smithson, (who is doing a fantastic job at keeping the WWC front and center in Westport online publications), announcing that we are accepting applications would have gone out. Please encourage your favorite non-profits to apply
for a grant. Applications are due October 31.

NEW PRESIDENT LEADS
WESTPORT WOMAN'S CLUB
 The Westport Woman's Club welcomes Christina McVaney, as its new President as the Club enters its 112th year of service, fundraising and philanthropy. A Westport resident since 2007, Christina places great importance on giving back to her community. She has served the WWC as co-chair of several fundraisers, including the club's largest fundraiser, The Yankee Doodle Fair, for the past five years.
While balancing her career as a residential realtor, Christina has consistently carved personal time for her commitment to volunteerism. Christina is a current board member for Neighbors and Newcomers of Westport, and was an active PTA parent while her three children attended Westport Public Schools. As WWC president, Christina's schedule will include overseeing Westport Woman's Club operating budgets, annual grant awards, need-based scholarship awards, food closet collaboration with the town's Human Services Department, board meetings, social gatherings, holiday giving, and club fundraisers throughout the year.
Born in Michigan, Christina spent most of her childhood in Beirut, Lebanon before returning to Michigan for high school, and then graduating from the University of Michigan. She speaks French, Arabic, and Spanish and had lived in Illinois, California and Massachusetts before arriving in Connecticut with her husband, Keith, and their family. They enjoy hiking, movies, and traveling together as a family.
"I'm happy and proud to take on the position of President of the Westport Woman's Club. My mother and grandmother were both involved in Woman's Clubs in Michigan and I'm looking forward to continuing that family tradition of community involvement and philanthropy. I hope that over the next two years I will continue the great work of past presidents and I'm eager to introduce innovations and new ideas of my own."

CLUB DAY

Join us on Monday, October 1, for Club Day, hosted by Community Services chaired by Susan Hricik and by our Book Review group chaired by Pat Vezendy.
Wasn't the meal at our last Club Day tasty? Members seemed thrilled with the food that our new caterer, Aux Delices, provided for us at Club Day in September. This month's luncheon will be Stuffed Shells with Housemade Marinara Sauce, Italian bread, and Roasted Broccoli. Dessert will be a Fall Fruit Cup.
Please be sure to make your reservation by 1:00 pm on the Wednesday before Club Day. If you have a serious food allergy or are a vegetarian, let me know. If you need to cancel your reservation, please do so by calling the WWC office by 1:00 pm on Wednesday, September 26, to avoid being charged for your luncheon.
NOTE: Our new permanent reservation lunch list will begin in October. It is so much easier to be on the permanent list instead of trying to remember every month to reserve your lunch spot. Keep in mind that any member on that list who does not show/cancel will receive a gentle reminder to guarantee that she contributes the $20.00 for missing lunch.

PROGRAM - October Club Day
FLAMENCO: YOU'VE GOT TO HAVE ATTITUDE! OLE!!
Please join us and our special guest, Penny Pearlman, a motivational speaker, author and consultant, and author of the triple award winning "Pretty Smart: Lessons from our Miss Americas." Penny took up Flamenco three years ago and has traveled twice to Jerez de la Frontera in southern Spain to study.
Yohanna Escamilla will perform with Penny.
Flamenco is a dance form characterized by fiery passion, emotional intensity, haunting music and complicated rhythms.
With roots in Moorish, Jewish and Indian cultures, this unique dance style highlights fast footwork, elegant arms and a sophisticated form of clapping called "palmas."
Jose Greco and Carlos Montoya popularized Flamenco in the United States during the 1950's and 60s. In this presentation you'll learn about the history of Flamenco, the elements of the dance, music and costumes and what makes it so thrilling to watch. You'll also get a chance to try "palmas" yourself and even a few steps.
You're never too old to dance!

MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER WALK - 2018

Place: Sherwood Island State Park
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and on Sunday, October 14 - as we have done in past years - members of the Westport Woman's Club will be walking as a group in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Sherwood Island State Park. This walk, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, helps to raise funds for breast cancer research and to raise awareness.
Please go to the website for Making Strides for Breast Cancer Walk, click on the Westport location, and register under the Westport Woman's Club team. Even if you are unable to participate in the walk, you can still make a donation. You can also register when you arrive at the walk.
Most of us do a walk that is slightly more than one mile - the scenery is beautiful - and the comradery with thousands of other walkers is heartwarming. Please join us - our group will meet at 9:30 am at the flag pole near the pavilion. Look for our white and pink sign with the Westport Woman's Club name on it. Contact Audrey Rabinowitz at

BOOK REVIEW
Date: October 25 - Meeting on the 4th Thursday this month only

"Flight Behavior" by Barbara Kingsolver
The word "rapture" appears on the very first page of "Flight Behavior" and is very appropriate as the novel extols the ecstasy of passionate engagement - with people, ideas and the environment. We meet, Dellarobia Turnbow, a restless farm wife, weighing the rapturous potential of flinging herself into a love affair that will wreak havoc on her placid life. As she hikes up a mountain behind her house to a secret tryst, she is stopped in her tracks by a valley blazing "with its own internal flame". This vision turns out to be of such enormous consequence that the world will soon arrive on her doorstep.
We look forward to seeing you as we discuss this book and the important issues that are brought to mind.

As always, we operate picnic/tailgate style, bringing our own simple set-ups and serving implements, then disappearing without footprints or fingerprints.

All players are welcome, regardless of skill level and experience. You do not need to have your own Canasta cards and tray but, if you do, please bring them.
Lessons are given, also on Tuesdays from 1:00 - 4:00 pm, to Members who would like to learn to play the game or haven't played in years but want to brush up on their skills. Please contact me if you are interested.

COMMUNITY SERVICES

WWC Ladies will have a pleasant "Meet 'n Greet" with Elaine Daignault, Westport's Human Services Director, during our September meeting. Thank you, Elaine, for your time and shared thoughts regarding our community's needs and outreach programs. We are proud to support to the Westport community.
We have received several thank-you notes from the twenty-six May 2018 grant recipients. At times, a grant recipient liaison may contact our Club for potential volunteers. We will post those opportunities when received and if appropriate.
*The Mercy Learning Center is seeking volunteers to teach women who are "English Language Learners" appropriate skills as well as basic adult reading and math in its small group tutoring program. Please contact Lynn Gabriel or Erica Hoffman at 203-334-6699, if you are interested. The Center is holding tutor training sessions on September 14 and September 28. They also plan on holding another in January 2019.
We are looking forward to your participation in the "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk" benefit which is being held the morning of Sunday, October 14, at Sherwood Island State Park. Audrey Rabinowitz is our Team Captain again and is looking to gather a great WWC group. Do contact Audrey at [email protected] for details. Needed are a Smile, Happy Feet and Your Time!

GARDEN DEPARTMENT

Place: Meet at Westport Woman's Club
On Tuesday, October 9, we will be going to the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, CT to visit the Wee Faire Village. Get ready to explore Lettersburg Junction, the enchanting region where fairies live in alphabetically placed houses resembling all the letters of the alphabet, from A to Z. There's also the quaint hamlet of Numbertown and Punctuation Stations where the homes are somewhat questionable (?), excited (!), inclusive (&), and trendy (#).
Lunch will be at Cafe Flo, which is on the premises. Reservations are needed for lunch, and the cost is separate from the tour.
Drivers are needed. Please let us know who is willing to drive and how many passengers you can accommodate. The cost of the self-guided tour is $14.00. We will meet at WWC at 9:00 am. To see previous Wee Fairie Village exhibits, you may check the website: www.florencegriswoldmuseum.org.

The WWC Food Closet has received so many requests from Westport families and individuals during the end of the summer and the beginning of fall, that we are now sorely lacking the following staples from our shelves:

* Corned Beef Hash

And as we get closer to Thanksgiving, we always like to give out:

Thanks to the continued support and generosity of club members, our Food Closet is able to fulfill requests from those in our town who are in need. We would appreciate it if you could purchase several of the above items when you are doing your family's grocery shopping this month. Be sure to look for sales and specials at your favorite stores. Your donations can be dropped off in the basket at the office door anytime. Thank you.

Harvest Wine & Bar Restaurant. We've been there several times, and several of the ladies requested that we return.
