Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Completes 10th ACCC Conductor Installation

In early January, PGCB completed their 15+ km double circuit 132 kV Haripur - Bhulta reconductor project using 416.2 mm^2 Grosbeak size ACCC Conductor.

Bhulta is close to the large Baburhat & Madhobdi wholesale textile market and Haripur is on the bank of the Sitalakhya river across from the Sidhirganj industrial area and power plants, an hour's drive from Dhaka.

Existing lattice structures were reused without modification with spans ranging from 150 to over 400 meters in length. 7.5 kilometers of the project was completed in wetlands, while 2.5 kilometers was completed in highly populated areas that included a major highway crossing. HG Power Transmission served as an EPC and they were supported by CTC Global's Regional Service Manager, Samudi Sampangi and ACCC Master Installer Mr. Balaji of TEEMS India.

The ACCC conductor for this project was provided by Midal and hardware was provided by Dervaux. The installation team used Omac Pullers & Tesmec Tensioners and neoprene lined sheave wheels.
PLN Starts Second 500 kV ACCC Line Upgrade

Following the success of the first 500 kV Suralaya -Balaraja ACCC conductor installation, PLN has started their second 500kV ACCC reconductor project known as the Balaraja - Lengkong - Gandul line in West Jakarta. Stringing of the first circuit will be completed in March, 2019.

KMI provided nearly 600 kilometers of ACCC conductor for the quad bundled 49 km reconductor project (1st circuit). PLN selected Amsterdam size ACCC to increase the capacity of the existing 500 kV line consisting of delta style steel lattice structures with spans of ~480 meters. PLN selected contractors P.T. Tinakana and P.T. Indokarya.

The installation has been broken down into 7 sections and is currently being strung using 4 installation crews. Roads and buildings are being protected by scaffold type structures erected by the installation contractors.

While this is only PLN's second 500 kV ACCC conductor installation, PLN has already completed over 80 ACCC conductor installations at 70 and 150 kV.

ACCC Conductor Utilization Continues in the UK

CTC Global, long active in the UK market, has seen a steady upswing in projects in recent years.

CTC's recent project activity has spanned both the transmission and distribution network areas, from 33kV to 132kV, with line lengths totalling over 150 km delivered and energized in 2018. All projects have been delivered within the RIIO 1 framework.

"The UK market posed a particular challenge for CTC in the beginning," advised Peter Hughes, CTC's VP for North Europe. "Prevailing conditions dictate a conductor system resistant to unusually high wind and radial ice loadings as laid down by BS EN 50341, coupled with the bounds of National Grid's TS2.04 governing the re-utilisation of overhead transmission lines at the 132, 275 and 400kV levels." ACCC has been extensively tested in the UK over the years and is totally compliant with these standards.

Operators have found that the adoption of CTC's ACCC ULS core technology in particular suits network upgrade challenges on a mature infrastructure under these conditions, for such applications as capacity increase and sag reduction. The fact that only minimal, if any, tower strengthening is required for a project where ACCC is specified, has a major positive influence on the overall reconductoring project costs.

Operators also keep a keen eye on corona emissions minimisation, since noise presents a particular challenge with other HTLS technologies currently on the network in the UK's prevailing climate. ACCC's trapezoidal layers with enhanced strand surface area contact help greatly in this.

"2019-2020 look equally promising," continued Hughes. We are already involved in significant projects totaling over 350 km for ACCC ULS variants in both the 132 and 275 kV transmission networks due in 2019 and are confident that 2020 will prove equally positive." Many of the new projects coming on line in 2019-2020 will be based around ACCC AZR (AlZr alloy) conductors with superior ice performance and only minimal reduction in nominal transmission capacity.

To achieve this, CTC has worked closely with the network operators and their internal/external designers at the initial stages. During installation, CTC actively supports the EPCs and contractors with a wide range of services all the way through each project, including stringing plan reviews, advice on fittings selection, installation equipment checks, training and very active field service.

CTC Global's Conductor Comparison Program CCP Software is Now Available Online

CTC Global is pleased to announce that our highly regarded Conductor Comparison Program (CCP) software is now available online, and is accessible at ccp.ctcglobal.com

The new web-based version has all the features found in the Excel version, which has been replaced and will no longer be supported. The new version is designed to make it easier to use, and it also has some new features. Having CCP online will make it easier to keep it up-to-date with new wire files and other data, and to add improvements as they are made. Users will always know they have the current version every time they log in. CCP is also compatible with tablets.

All data required for calculations is entered on one page. Representative ACCC® Conductors are automatically selected based on the "base" conductor selected. Some fields are automatically entered based on earlier entries or saved user preferences. For example, latitude is entered from a web app based on the project location, and currency conversion is provided using real-time web app information. The user can edit most input data, including default and automatically selected data. Registered users can save multiple projects, recall them, modify them and save them as new projects or overwrite the existing projects.

CCP comparison output is displayed on a separate page. Frequently changed input used for sensitivity analysis is conveniently provided on that same page to minimize toggling between pages. Registered users can export reports that break out sections of the output to PDF and Excel files.

Registration to use CCP requires only a valid email address and password. Users may also use CCP as a guest however, saving and export features are only available to registered users.

Thank you for using our CCP. We welcome your feedback. For technical support, please contact [email protected]
