MAP Test Results, APR Score

Dear AL community,

The 2018 MAP test results have been made public. Because the tests were new, the results are not comparable to previous years'. However, as you can see below, our APR (Annual Performance Report) score has constantly improved. Congratulations to our students on their hard work, and to our teachers and staff for the great job done supporting them!

Reading Week at Cherry

Un grand merci to all the parents and community members who helped make reading week a success. We celebrated reading at Cherry with door decorations, book cover contests, assemblies with A.L. parents who are authors, book giveaways and guest readers. We even had a special visit from the Big Bad Wolf.

We couldn't possibly name all the people who helped, but we do want to mention a few people who gave their time and energy:
Stacia Milius
Susan and Refe Tuma
Robyn King
Andy Swan
Shelly Doucet
Kelly Baker
Marie-Catherine Marchand

Happy Reading!

Cherry Principal

Dear Parents: If you have a child entering kindergarten in the fall of 2019, now is the time to apply. The process will take you less than one minute!

(This is different from last year's link.)

To be fair and transparent with all prospective families, we want to be able to tell them how many seats are available and how many seats will be taken by siblings. Your help is essential. Please fill out an application for your kindergarten sibling today.

The deadline to apply is Friday, March 1st at 4:00 p.m.  Sibling applications received after this deadline will be placed on the waiting list.

Questions? Call Diane Balagna at  816-888-7400.

After you fill out your child's application, tell your friends and neighbors
with an incoming kindergartener to do the same.

Would your family consider hosting an  intern  for the upcoming school year?
Interns are university students from French speaking countries who spend a year working in the classrooms of our youngest students. We review their resumes and references, and we interview them at length to make sure they are a good fit for our school. They also fill out a questionnaire about the  host family experience which helps match them with  host families.

Host families open their homes and welcome an  intern for a semester or for a year. They provide a private bedroom and meals when you are together as a family. The school provides a generous monthly stipend to the  intern and a monthly city bus pass.

Hosting an intern is a great way for your children to speak French at home, to discover more about francophone culture, and to have someone to visit when your family goes to France in the future!

Stephanie and Bill Kalahurka have been hosting Emma Pochelu this year. They hosted an intern a few years ago, and they were excited to host another. Here's what Stephanie has to say about the experience:

"Hosting an intern is a fun way to use our spare room to "give back" to AL. We love learning about the differences between KC and all of the places Emma has lived and traveled.  Finding fun things to do with her in KC also gives us an excuse to try new things
that we might not otherwise do. We appreciate that our children get to know these wonderful young people and learn from their example - they are true citizens of the world."

When asked what advice she would give to a future host family, she says, " Be very honest in your family questionnaire. This helps Diane pair your family with an intern who will be a good match."

Thank you, Stephanie, Bill, Amelia and Billy for hosting Emma this year!

If you would like more information about hosting, please contact Diane Balagna,
