San Jose Continues its Extensive Public Engagement Process on Transit Improvements and the Potential Google Development Coming to the Diridon Station Area

Over the past 6 months, the City of San Jose has hosted 35 meetings, amassing more than 1100 encounters with residents to discuss our collective vision for transit improvements and the potential Google development coming to the Diridon Station Area. We invite all our residents to participate in our continued civic engagement process in the months to come. If you missed one of these meetings, you can still offer your feedback to city leaders with our new online tool.  Join the conversation.

Mayor Liccardo "Flips the Switch" on San Jose Clean Energy

Last week, Mayor Liccardo "flipped the switch" to
officially launch the first phase of San Jose Clean Energy (SJCE)- - a major pillar of our City's Climate Smart San Jose sustainability plan.
The phase I roll-out transitions more than 1,700 municipal energy accounts -- including San Jose City Hall, the Regional Wastewater Facility, and San Jose International Airport -- from PG&E to SJCE. Together, these facilities use more than 100 million kilowatt-hours of energy annually. The first phase of service provides these municipal accounts with a mix of 40% renewable, and 100% carbon-free energy.

Phase II of the Program -- set to roll out March 2019 -- will extend service to San Jose businesses and residents, with the option to select 100% renewable, carbon-free power.

SJCE's launch comes at the heels of San Jose's recent string of accolades recognizing its climate leadership on the global stage. In August, the San Jose Metro Area came in first on the United Nation's ranking of cities meeting their Sustainable Development Goals. In September, San Jose was also named California's first -- and the world's sixth -- LEED-certified city.
San Jose Continues Working to Facilitate and Build Affordable and Homeless Housing

In an effort to build more affordable housing, and to get our homeless residents out of neighborhood streets, creeks and parks, the City of San Jose has been focusing on encouraging and supporting affordable and homeless housing developments.

In July, city leaders celebrated the groundbreaking of Villas on the Park, a new 100% homeless housing development in Downtown San Jose only blocks from City Hall. The development -- set to open doors in 2019 -- will house 83 of our homeless neighbors and host on-site supportive services and security to better help residents get back on their feet.

In addition, a new development set to host more than 300  affordable, rent-restricted homes near Diridon Station has completed the property sale and received critical financing needed to bring the vision closer to reality. In July, partners like Housing Trust Silicon Valley provided over $15 million in financing to help secure the parcels and cover pre-development costs.

These projects join more 1100 new affordable homes in San Jose's development pipeline, bringing us closer to Mayor Liccardo's goal of building 10,000 affordable homes over the next 5 years. Learn more about Mayor Liccardo's housing plan geared to address our city's housing crisis.
