Come In WE ARE REOPEN
The Life Skills Institute is Back!
Remote learning, sanitizing, and masks are new, but they're now a routine part of life at the "new" LSI. Classes will be smaller and follow a hybrid model in case circumstances require a shift to Zoom or Google Classroom. Most classes already have a waiting list!
The Getting Ahead workshop, sponsored by the city, had to stop in March but resumed last month, using Zoom to reunite the class.
In mid-July a new Career Essentials program called "Youth Works" began for ages 16-24, provided by Virginia Career Works. Students are in class part-time and get paid work experience at Park View part-time to enable them to be "work-ready" in the future.
A Career Essentials course for adults will began August 24.
Face Covering
Computer classes start August 17, ths time at three different levels. Participants will join either the Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced courses, as determined by their skill level. Prep help will also be offered for the Microsoft Office certification exam.
Also beginning August 13 is our fourth "Home Essentials" class where our learners will be improving their skills in home care, cooking, first aid, cleaning, and handling money. Here's how one graduate described her experience:
Social Distancing
"This class was awesome. Our teacher gave me lots of information and resources that help me, including budgeting. This program is a must in our community and I think it must keep going on."
Why should you care?
To reduce the poverty rate we must raise the employability rate. When people have good-paying jobs they contribute more to the local economy, and when that happens, everyone wins. Click the logo to the left for more information about LSI.
Want to help? We need some willing workers to do some sanitizing after each class, assist the instructor as needed, or just be friendly and give encouragement to those who come to better themselves. You'll experience the joy of giving...
On the TV show "Undercover Millionaire" a rich man secretly volunteered with a non-profit group that helps the poor. He quickly realized that what made him the happiest he had ever been was giving... simply doing good for the good of someone else. Now he's richer than he's ever been.
Volunteering with a friend is even better! Ask how you can help:
