Webinars on Facilitative Leadership for Virtual Work

How can we develop as compassionate and responsive leaders? How do we create spaces for growth and understanding under these conditions? How should we carry forward best practices for virtual connection into a post-pandemic future?
During a time when many of us are working remotely and seeking new ways to collaborate, build community, and create change, the Switzer Foundation has partnered with the Interaction Institute for Social Change to provide two 90-minute webinars on bringing facilitative leadership to virtual work:
- Designing for Love and Equity in Virtual Meetings. In this webinar, you will learn to: articulate why bringing love and equity into virtual meetings is an important practice for facilitative leaders; use transformative prompts, mindfulness and affinity spaces; and use arts and healing to bring love and equity into your virtual meetings.
- Collaborative Decision-Making and Shared Leadership. In this webinar, you will learn to: articulate what "shared leadership" is and why it's important to organizations, networks, and the world right now; promote equitable leadership and operate in ways that foster "power-with" instead of "power-over;" and engage stakeholders in collaborative decision making.
Registration is limited to 50 people for each session. Registered participants will have access to recordings of two additional webinars on related topics (Managing Power Dynamics in Virtual Meetings and Balancing the Dimensions of Success: Results-Process-Relationship).

Nigel Golden: Practices that reduce participation and retention in STEM
Nigel Golden presented the 2020 Ambrose Jearld Jr. Lecture on Diversity and Inclusion in July. His topic was "Reducing Harm: A Politic to Address Institutional and Cultural Practices that Reduce Participation and Retention in STEM".

Who are boundary spanners and how can we support them in making knowledge more actionable in sustainability fields?
Kristen Goodrich co-authored a paper in a special issue of Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability devoted to making scientific knowledge 'actionable'. She believes many Fellows might identify as boundary spanners, and many more will find the entire special issue relevant to their work. None of the articles require a subscription to read.

Integrating oceans into climate policy: Any green new deal needs a splash of blue
Angee Doerr recently published an article in Conservation Letters, writing, "Given political friction and constrained budgets, an integrated policy framework offers greater potential to achieve a portfolio of mitigation and adaptation goals in a cost-effective manner, beyond what could be realized with marine or terrestrial policy solutions alone."

New fellows Christina De Jesús Villanueva and Luis Alexis Rodríguez-Cruz recently collaborated on publishing an op-ed in El Nuevo Día. The op-ed, about the impact of green iguanas on agriculture, resulted in a reported piece. Read summaries in English and download the full articles in Spanish.
Kendra Klein co-authored an op-ed in The Guardian explaining a Friends of the Earth study that showed pesticides in the body can be reduced by 70% in just six days on an organic diet.
Thomas Gill was quoted widely in June when the Saharan Desert dust cloud reduced visibility across the Southeast U.S. and Puerto Rico.
Tavis Forrester served on the team that developed the unanimously-adopted Climate and Ocean Change Policy of Oregon's Department of Fish and Wildlife. They believe they were the first state fish and wildlife commission in the nation to adopt such a measure.
Genie Bey co-authored the Community Resilience Education Theory of Change report for NOAA's Environmental Literacy Program.
Jose Gutierrez was quoted in a press release from US Representative Barragán's office on the Outdoors for All Act.

The Smith Fellows program has extended its application deadline for postdoctoral fellowships in conservation science to October 2. Contact Sarah Reed for advice about the application process.
The Christensen Fund is seeking a new Executive Director, and Kyra Busch, Program Officer, is available to chat with anyone who is interested.
Skoll Foundation is seeking a climate analyst contractor (20hrs/week) to support their growing climate team. Contact Rebecca Dell, and she'll put you in touch with her colleague.
The National Audubon Society is hiring a VP, Natural Solutions and Working Lands and Karen Hyun, VP, Coastal Conservation, has offered to be a resource. In addition, National Audubon Society is searching for a Chief Conservation Officer and VP, Climate. Contact Sarah Reed if you are interested in an introduction to the executive search firm.
