Spruce Integrates with CRM
ECi Software Solutions, Fort Worth, Tx., is integrating its Spruce ERP Software with Microsoft Dynamics 365, a web-based customer relationship management tool.

Prior to the integration CRM data - such as communication history with contractors - was separate from the Spruce system's transactional information, making it harder for dealers to access up-to-date customer profiles and requiring them to input information more than once. Now, Spruce users will have the ability to access complete customer profiles any time from one central location without having to toggle between two systems.

LBM Advantage Dedicates Board Room in Memory of Henry G. Page, Jr.

Recently, LBM Advantage held a dedication ceremony to name their new Windsor, N.Y. office board room in memory of Henry G. Page, Jr. Mr. Page was an owner of  H.G. Page & Sons in Poughkeepsie, NY, a community leader, mentor and friend to many in the LBM industry.

Recap of BMSA's 2019 Learning Exchange & LBM Expo

First and foremost, we would like to thank each and every exhibitor, sponsor and attendee for making our 2019 Learning Exchange & LBM Expo very successful and rewarding. Without the participation from our dedicated members it would not have been possible! The theme for this year was "Knowledge is Power." We hope that through our educational seminars and networking opportunities on the show floor that you have gained the right tools to have a successful 2019! We had more than 60 exhibiting companies and there were more than 70 Dealer companies represented.

Our 2019 Dealer of the Year is Berlin G. Myers Lumber Corporation in Summerville, SC. Our 2019 Supplier of the Year is Huttig Building Products in Greenville, SC and Rocky Mount, NC. Congratulations to both of these companies for this well-deserved honor! Our Best of Show Winner was Simpson Strong-Tie. Congratulations to our Grand Prize Winners Knox Morrison of Morrison Brothers in Concord, NC and Bob Smith of Hoke Lumber in Davidson, NC. Both went home with $4000 in their pockets!

Be the Change

The 2018 midterm elections shifted the political landscape in Washington with Democrats taking control of the House of Representatives and Republicans keeping control of the Senate. Both parties are currently mapping out their legislative agendas that could include infrastructure, taxes, and trade policy.

With so much at stake and so many opportunities to advance important issues, consider joining other BMSA members for the National Lumber & Building Material Dealers Association's (NLBMDA) Legislative Conference.  This conference is your opportunity to hear from lawmakers directly. In addition to the members of Congress who are scheduled to speak at the conference, attendees have the opportunity to visit personally with lawmakers during scheduled appointments. You are the best representative for your business and industry, and your personal stories make a persuasive and powerful case for policies that will make residential housing and the overall economy stronger.

The meeting is an incredible way to educate yourself on a variety of issues, network with industry colleagues, participate in the legislative process, and shape policy that can make for a better future. Come join us in Washington on April 1-3, 2019 at the Wink Hotel in Washington, D.C.  Add your voice on issues affecting your business and be a part of the change you want to see in Washington, D.C. Take the first step today and register at http://www.leg-con.org/.

Planning Truck Safety for Your Fleet in 2019

In addition to spring cleaning and doing your taxes, planning and preparation are needed to improve safety of trucking fleets. Winter driving is just one challenge that drivers face, and fleet owners need to take the time to learn about each season's challenges, collect data on problems as they occur, and develop contingency plans to prevent future problems. Other issues fleet owners face include the adoption of item response theory (IRT) for evaluating carrier safety by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Companies need to schedule team meetings soon and list what safety measures need to be delivered. They should talk to their employees on the dock and in the yard; mark down the 2019 dates for National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, Sept. 8-14; and plan, step-by-step, for their celebration. They also should share specifics about the company with customers and staff, including improved safety numbers; how drivers want to work for them because they are safe (and, thus, they have the manpower to meet customer needs); and how their safety allows them to qualify for electronic bypass like PrePass, allowing more timely and reliable service to the customer. Planning is required to gather and include those safety specifics, but that little bit of planning can be very rewarding.

U.S. Department of Labor Provides Compliance Assistance Resources to Protect Workers from Falls

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has developed a collection of compliance assistance resources to address falls in the workplace, the leading cause of worker fatality in the construction industry. OSHA's goal is to promote awareness about common fall hazards in construction, educate job creators and workers on fall prevention, and reduce the number of fall-related injuries and fatalities. These resources, which continue the goals of the Office of Compliance Initiatives, encourage and facilitate compliance evaluations. Falls can be prevented if employers plan ahead to ensure the job is done safely, provide the right equipment, and train workers to use the equipment safely. OSHA is working with industry stakeholders to provide informative compliance assistance resources. Meanwhile, the sixth annual  National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction will be held May 6-10, 2019. The agency also has a  series of fall safety videos that show how to prevent construction-related fall hazards from floor openings, skylights, fixed scaffolds, bridge decking, re-roofing, and leading edge work. Further, OSHA has a  Fall Prevention Training Guide that provides a lesson plan for employers including several Toolbox Talks, and a brief video,  On-Site Consultation Program provides valuable services for job creators that are separate from enforcement. OSHA recently published an analysis demonstrating how the agency's On-Site Consultation Program contributes $1.3 billion to the national economy each year.
