Virtual Town Hall - March 12 at 2 pm ET

To help prepare the Society for our June meetings, while keeping Members and friends aware of the Society's activities, a Virtual Town Hall Meeting has been scheduled on March 12, 2019 at 2 pm ET. Key items to be discussed include new resources and opportunities from TMS, reminders on key deadlines for scholarships, awards, and more; a quick update on the financial health of the Society; and a Contest to help TMS recruit and maintain new Members. Critical committee activities will be discussed, along with ways you may be able to participate on some committees virtually.

Lintel Design Webinar - May 15 @ 1 pm ET

Even
though we planned to hold off on additional webinars until the fall, the response to the webinars has been so strong, that we decided to add another this spring. Sam Rubenzer, who presented an excellent webinar on movement control last fall has graciously agreed to present a seminar on Lintels in Masonry Walls. He will review
the behavior and load distribution of a lintel within a wall, to help design this common element more effectively and efficiently.

RFP for 14th NAMC - Proposals due by May 1, 2019 |
As has been reported, the 13th North American Masonry Conference is rapidly approaching. At the conference, it is hoped that the site for the 14th North American Masonry Conference, which will be held in 2023, can be announced. Therefore, The Masonry Society is accepting proposals from interested universities/professors wishing to host the conference. Proposals must be submitted to TMS no later than May 1, 2019. Details on proposal requirements are outlined
here.

Presentations Sought for Scottsdale Annual Meeting

In 2014, TMS held a fantastic set of meetings in Scottsdale, Arizona, and perhaps due to the success of those meetings, events, hikes, and educational sessions, we are headed back on November 6-9. To help us provide an even better set of meetings in 2019, we are seeking i
nteresting presentations by excellent speakers
Presentations will be given on the morning of November 7 and are to be from 15 to 20 minutes in length.

by March 15, 2019. Presentations must not be promotional and should be of interest to those wishing to learn more about the design, construction, evaluation, or repair of masonry. A selection committee will consider proposals and will notify accepted presenters in the Spring.

TMS's "2nd Thursday of the month" webinar series is taking a hiatus after the January 10, 2019 webinar on Rational Design of Masonry Veneers and Shelf Angle Supports to allow staff and TMS Members to focus on the upcoming North American Masonry Conference. But TMS will continue the series during the Fall of 2019, so
send us your ideas for interesting webinar topics, and if you are willing to present a 1 hour webinar, let us know that as well.

The Masonry Society (TMS) is accepting applications for the 2019 James L. Noland Student Fellowship until April 16, 2019 as well as the Clayford T. Grimm P.E. Student Scholarship until July 31, 2019.
Established in 1995 to honor the memory of James L. Noland, the Noland Fellowship is awarded every four years to a graduate student who is doing research on masonry. This research can be on materials, structures, architecture, or construction and must be performed under the direction of a Member of The Masonry Society. The current value of the award is $3,000 US. The next award will be presented in Salt Lake City, Utah, June 16 - 19, 2019, at the 13th NAMC.

Among awards recently given by the American Concrete Institute, TMS Members Sergio M. Alcocer of Instituto de Ingeniería, UNAM received the Charles S. Whitney Medal and Jeffrey F. Speck of Arcosa Lightweight was given the Cedric Willson Lightweight Aggregate Concrete Award.
