REDUCING SOCIAL ISOLATION FOR SENIORS

The Forum of Federal, Provincial and Territorial Ministers Responsible for Seniors has developed three supplements to its 2017 Social Isolation of Seniors toolkit. The new supplements focus on the social inclusion needs of three specific sub populations believed to be at higher risk of social isolation: These supplements can help individuals and communities better understand the issue of social isolation and identify ways to address and prevent it.

Centre for Studies in Aging & Health
February 26, 1 p.m. (Eastern)
Free

Social capital is the term used to describe the vibrancy of social networks and the extent to which there is trust and reciprocity within a community and among individuals. The results of a 2018 survey of Toronto residents show that seniors are faring better on measures of social capital than initially expected, and in many cases, have better social capital than younger populations within Toronto. The survey identified four areas that encompass social capital: Social Trust, Social Networks, Civic Engagement, and Neighbourhood Support.

At a time when social isolation is a growing concern - particularly amongst seniors - researchers and policymakers are working to gain a more granular understanding of the issue to identify ways that isolation can be combatted and social inclusion can be deepened. Learn more in this webinar.
