The Forum of Federal, Provincial and Territorial Ministers Responsible for Seniors has developed three supplements to its 2017 Social Isolation of Seniors toolkit. The new supplements focus on the social inclusion needs of three specific sub populations believed to be at higher risk of social isolation:

• Indigenous seniors
• LGBTQ2S+ seniors
• New immigrant and refugee seniors

These supplements can help individuals and communities better understand the issue of social isolation and identify ways to address and prevent it.

Social capital is the term used to describe the vibrancy of social networks and the extent to which there is trust and reciprocity within a community and among individuals. The results of a 2018 survey of Toronto residents show that seniors are faring better on measures of social capital than initially expected, and in many cases, have better social capital than younger populations within Toronto. The survey identified four areas that encompass social capital: Social Trust, Social Networks, Civic Engagement, and Neighbourhood Support.
