H ONOLULU TRAFFIC TIE-UPS FOUND TO BE AMONG COSTLIEST...
IN THE WORLD!

Honolulu's traffic congestion is infamous, among the worst in the country, and that congestion comes with a cost in terms of lost productivity. According to the 2018 INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard, that cost is more than 12-hundred dollars per Oahu driver, an amount that ranks Honolulu among the top 20 cities IN THE WORLD as far as money lost to traffic congestion.

The $1,282 lost per driver per year ranks Honolulu 20th in the world and 17th in the U.S, on par with cities like New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Miami. That's nearly five-dollars lost

per workday for every Oahu driver, in addition to gas, insurance, parking, depreciation, etc. The Global Traffic Scorecard is an analysis of congestion and mobility trends in more than 200 cities and 38 countries worldwide.

In terms of overall traffic congestion, Honolulu ranked 111th and 92nd with 132 hours lost to traffic congestion, or the equivalent of 16 and a half lost workdays.

"42 MINUTES FROM KAPOLEI TO ALA MOANA
ALL THE TIME,  EVERY TIME"

The Honolulu Rail Transit Project is designed to be a high-capacity, highly-reliant system. Moving as many people as possible, quickly, safely, and reliably is one of the cornerstones of the Project.

West Oahu communities (Ewa, Kapolei, and the Leeward Coast) are collectively the most populated areas on Oahu, with Ewa and Kapolei also joining to be the fastest growing communities on the island.  With rush-hour traffic to and from those areas already among the worst in the country, something had to be done to address an increasingly desperate situation.

HART Executive Director Andrew Robbins talks about the importance of not only providing an alternative transportation option for West Oahu commuters, but also an option that is timely and reliable.

HART C.E.O. TALKS OPS & MAINTENANCE ON THIS WEEK'S "HART BEAT"

During the most recent "HART Beat" on the Mike Buck Radio Show, HART Executive Director & C.E.O. Andrews Robbins touched upon the topic of operations and maintenance costs of the Honolulu Rail Transit System.

In the 2016 elections, Honolulu voters passed a measure to move the operation and maintenance responsibilities of the Project to the City's Department of Transportation Services once rail is up and running.  With interim service set to begin next year, Robbins addressed the "O&M" questions during the broadcast.

RAIL EDUCATION AT THE "HONOLULU NIGHT MARKET"

By Hana Grimmer
HART Public Involvement Intern

HART's Public Involvement Team braved high winds and occasional rain recently, to make it a successful night at Street Grindz's "Honolulu Night Market" in Kaka'ako. Thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds came to the event, ready to enjoy the food and entertainment from a myriad of street vendors scattered across Keawe and Auahi Streets.

HART's educational outreach booth gained a lot of attention among festival-goers interested in the City Center portion of the rail project. Attendees were especially interested in the Project's Civic Center Station to be located near Keawe Street in Kaka'ako on Halekauwila Street.

CONSTRUCTION REMINDER

Periodically, the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation puts out a friendly reminder that as crews progress with construction work across all 20 miles of the Rail Transit Project, please navigate all construction areas with care.  Always stay alert and reduce your driving speed as you enter any construction area and be advised that in all construction zones, the adjusted speed limit is 25 miles-per-hour.

HART thanks you for your patience and understanding as crews work to complete the Honolulu Rail Transit Project.

It's not safety first,  it's safety always!
