ASAP Funding Provided for Roadside Safety Improvements for Rural Roads

The Accelerating Safety Activities Program (ASAP) is designed to help Safety Focus States promote safety innovations. Kentucky was awarded ASAP funding to host a Roadside Safety Improvements for Rural Roads course.
The Roadside Safety Improvements for Rural Roads course is designed for local governments to reduce roadway departures and fatalities. Speakers include subject experts from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, and local governments within Kentucky. The program is a two-day training event which includes seven of the FHWA Proven Safety Countermeasures and a review of Kentucky's Strategic Highway Safety Plan. The following additional topics requested by local governments will also be addressed: High Friction Service Treatments, Shoulder Maintenance and Shoulder Drop Off, Signs Supports, and Guardrails.
Technology Transfer (T2) is currently finalizing the dates and locations but plan to host the two-day trainings in Bowling Green/Hopkinsville, Lexington, Northern Kentucky and Somerset.

Register Now for Pesticide Training
In Kentucky, it is required that any person handling, applying or supervising the use of pesticides as part of that person's job must be certified and licensed by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. Non-commercial pesticide applicators must complete 12 hours of training over a three-year period to remain certified. The Technology Transfer (T2) Program at the University of Kentucky is offering training and testing for the 2016-2017 training season in Categories 3, 5 and 6 and continuing education for Categories 3, 5, 6 and 18.

New Survey Training Coming Soon!
The Technology Transfer Program, in partnership with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, will soon be offering a
Basic Measuring Skills for Highway Technicians
course.
The training includes basic surveying concepts, measurements, mathematics, and several field exercises. It is intended for technicians and inspectors, especially those without previous experience.
This training was created to provide basic guidance and instruction to personnel involved in highway construction and maintenance surveying.

The conference will consist of an all-day general session, exhibitors, and an equipment display. Session topics include the latest information and innovations on Emergency Response Training, Employment Law, Quality Based Selection and Young Professionals.
The conference will be held at the Owensboro Convention Center on Friday, September 14. Doors open at 8:00 am for registration with the opening general session beginning at 8:45 am. The conference will conclude at 4:00 pm. The registration fee is $100 and includes all materials, refreshments and lunch.

TC3 Leverages State and Industry Feedback to Launch New Courses
After leveraging responses received through the Suggest a Course for Development form on the TC3 website, we launched two brand new courses: Micropile and Corrosion of Structures. The Micropile course concentrates on installing and inspecting micropile, identifying critical checkpoints in the process. Corrosion of Structures explains what corrosion is, as well as how it applies to and appears in highway structures. Both of these courses are available for free if you register through September 2018!
Additionally, we wanted to spotlight our AASHTO Designation: T 312 course, which explains how to make all necessary calculations and complete the documentation required to prepare and determine the density of an asphalt mixture using the Superpave gyratory compactor. This course is also available for free if you register through September 2018!

Micropile:
This course instructs those in the construction industry on the installation and inspection of micropile, focusing on the inspection checkpoints during the installation process.
Corrosion of Structures:
This course covers the corrosion effects on transportation structures, in particular, reinforcing steel, reinforced concrete, and structural steel and girders.
AASHTO Designation: T 312:
This course explains how to perform all of the necessary set-up procedures and how to complete the steps in the test method, Preparing and Determining the Density of Asphalt Mixture Specimens by Means of the Superpave Gyratory Compactor.

Due to the overwhelming requests this year for training and the increase in the number of graduates, Roads Scholar and Road Master graduation dates will be in late November or December. As soon as the dates are confirmed we will send an announcement to all expected gradates as well as post it to our social media accounts and website. Please stay tuned.
