I hope you and your student had a great four-day weekend. Christy and I took the opportunity to spend some time with my parents in Oklahoma. It was a fun (and cold) weekend of staying warm by the fireplace, watching some movies, and spending time with family.
I enjoyed seeing so many of you at our Showcase event last Monday. Attendance at both the parent information sessions and the Showcase was strong. Thank you for partnering with us as we continue our work to improve our communication about opportunities available to students at LHS. As our counselors begin registration this week, we believe efforts like Showcase will help students make informed choices about which classes they select for next year.

Both Varsity and JV Boys' soccer teams are continuing their winning streaks in Soccer District games. Varsity is 3-0 and JV is 2-0! This Friday, we take on McKinney North at our home stadium. Please come out and cheer them on as we honor our favorite teachers at 6:40 pm and allow all Future Leopard Soccer Stars to shoot on the goal during halftime of the Varsity game, around 8:00pm. Bring out your younger siblings and neighbors and let them take a shot!

The Lovejoy High School third annual "
Java

Jazz
" joint concert with the Lovejoy Jazz Band and LHS vocalists will be here before you know it. Join us for an evening of great music starting at 7:00 PM on Friday, March 1. The musicians are sounding great and have a huge program to perform.
Admission is just $5.00. Coffee and dessert items will be available for a small fee. There will be an open dance floor for students and parents alike. The musicians and vocalists will perform a combination of classic swing-era classics and slow ballads. We hope to see you on the dance floor.

This Friday (Feb.22), Lovejoy HOSA is having a fundraiser at Wild Salsa in Fairview Town Center ALL DAY! PowerSchool is open this week for students to enter their course selection by clicking on Class Registration. This feature is available on a laptop or desktop, not on a phone or tablet.
Counselors will be meeting with current freshman and sophomores to review their course selection on Feb 20-22. Counselors will be meeting with current juniors from February 25 - March 8.
All forms and the Course Catalog are also available on the LHS Website under Departments / Counseling / Class of 2020 / Class of 2021 / Class of 2022.

An Important Message from the School Nurse
Cold and flu season is in FULL swing! Please remember to follow these guidelines set by the Texas Administrative Code:
- Cold and flu symptoms: PLEASE keep your student home until they are symptom free!
- Temperature of 100.0 degrees or more: Student must be fever free for 24 hours, without medication, before returning to school.
- Vomiting or Diarrhea: student must be symptom free form 24 hours, without medication, before returning to school.
If your student is concerned about missing a quiz or test, please consider that they are not performing at their best when they are not feeling well. Arrangements can be made with their teacher or in the Testing Center when they come back to school.

As a reminder, for the Team Presentation, three to five students collaborate as a team to identify a problem or issue. Team members work together to develop a research question; they then identify approaches, perspectives, or lenses for examining the question and divide responsibilities among themselves for individual research. Individually, students investigate their assigned approach, perspective, or lens on the issue or topic of the team research question.
Each student presents his or her findings and analysis to the group in a well-written individual report that:
* identifies the area of investigation and its relationship to the overall problem or issue;
* summarizes, explains, analyzes, and evaluates the main ideas and reasoning in the chosen
sources;
* identifies, compares, and interprets a range of perspectives about the problem or issue; and
* cites all sources used and includes a list of works cited or bibliography.
Working collaboratively, the team considers all the research and analyses from individual team members for the purpose of proposing one or more solutions or resolutions. The team:
* collaboratively synthesizes and evaluates individual findings and perspectives to create a
collective understanding of different approaches to the problem or issue;
* considers potential solutions or resolutions and conducts additional research in order to
evaluate different solutions within the context of the problem; and
* proposes one or more solutions or resolutions and prepares an argument to support their
proposal.
The team develops an 8-10 minute presentation that presents a convincing argument for the proposed solutions or recommendations. The team should ensure the claims made are supported by evidence and that they have considered different perspectives and the limitations and implications of their proposed solutions or recommendations. The presentation and the media used to enhance the presentation should consider audience, context, and purpose. Following the presentation, the team will defend its argument, with each student responding to a question posed by the teacher. Each team member should be prepared to answer questions about any part of the presentation. Once the recording for College Board is turned off, audience members may ask questions of the team.
Hop Into Spring Chess Tournament - March 30
This annual Lovejoy Tournament continues to be a hit around the metroplex. Come join your fellow chess players on March 30 at Sloan Creek for a wonderful day of chess play. This five round tournament awards the top three players in each section a trophy and fourth place receives a chocolate bunny. Gather up a team from your school and compete together. Gifted and Talented Referral Window Open -
February 1 - March 8
The referral window for students in grades 1-11 for gifted and talented services is open February 1 - March 8. Referral forms are located online in the PowerSchool Parent Portal.
Testing is scheduled for Saturday, March 30 and April 6. Appointments will be sent via email after the referral window closes March 8.
Please note: Kindergarten students will not be tested during the spring window.

Lovejoy Gifted Association Announces Rocket Build and Launch Events
3...2...1... Lift-off!
Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first people to land on the moon with the Lovejoy Gifted Association's Rocket Fest. The Lovejoy Gifted Association is partnering with the Dallas Area Rocket Society (DARS) for their annual LGA Rocket Fest. This event is suitable for students in grades 3 thru 6. Participants may choose between a basic and an advanced rocket model.
There will be a Rocket Build Party in the Sloan Creek Cafeteria
on Wednesday, March 6th from 6:30pm to 8:00pm
where a volunteer from DARS will talk the junior rocket scientists through building the basic rocket step-by-step. Participants purchasing the advanced rocket may pick up their build package that same evening and are welcome to start building at SCIS or build at home.

on Sunday March 24
in the front parking lot of Lovejoy High School
at 12:00 noon
, where volunteers from DARS will provide the launch equipment and make sure the launch process happens in a safe and orderly fashion.

Save the date! Lovejoy ISD will host the second annual STEM festival on March 2 at Lovejoy High School. The event will be held from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM. We hope you will join us for an exciting day filled with fascinating speakers, hands-on experiments, Makerspace, student exhibits, robotics lab, cool contests with prizes, food trucks, and much more. Junior World Affairs Council
JWAC students attended the Dallas World Affairs Council's annual World Quest competition at UT Arlington on Tuesday, February 12, 2019. Teams answered 100 multiple choice questions covering the following topics: Country in Focus: Qatar, How to Deal with North Korea, Global Refugee and Migration Crisis, #WeAreNATO - The Alliance at 70, Great Decisions, Japan-U.S. Relations, Space Policy, World Trade Organization, Bridging Divides to Build Peace, and Current Events. Out of 94 registered teams, we placed 21st and 32nd. Please congratulate Daniel Xue, Abigail Xue, Katherine Guo, Maddie Roth, Joe Ridgeway, Ethan Ohman, Andrew Godipelly, and Sam Norris.

LHS Wrestling
Results from the Regional Championships:
Our men and women battled it out in Pflugerville with the rest of the tough Regional competition. We had 8 men and 5 women who wrestled in the tournament. We had 10 wrestlers who placed within the top 5 qualifying them for the state tournament. Our men's team ended up finishing 5th overall out of 36 teams and our women's team finished 4th overall out of 31 teams.
The five women who will be advancing are Lilly Musselman, Avery Ashley, Katherine Heath, Charis Vela, and Morgan Elvin.
Sophomore Charis Vela put together a gutty performance on her way to a 5th place finish. Vela wrestled up two weight divisions, with her opponents having a considerable weight advantage and still battled her way to her placement.

Senior Lilly Musselman also fought through some tough circumstances due to illness and injury to place 5th. Musselman becomes one of only two four-time state qualifiers for the Leopards. Musselman (below) works to break down her opponent.
Freshmen Avery Ashley continued to perform beyond her years and placed 3rd in her weight to advance to the state tournament. Avery won all three of her matches with bonus point victories - by fall and two major decisions.

Junior Katherine Heath continued her dominant year by advancing all the way to the Regional championship match to finish 2nd in her weight. Heath lost a narrow decision in the final and will wrestle in her first state tournament next week. Heath pinned her way to the championship match, dominating her side of the bracket.

Senior Morgan Elvin capped off another record-setting day by winning her second consecutive regional championship! Elvin won all four of her matches by pin. She will be a #1 seed next week at the state tournament looking to win her first state championship. Elvin, like Musselman, advanced to her fourth straight state championship tournament!

On the men's side, six of the eight wrestling advanced to the second day, with five placing in the top 3 of their weights.
Freshmen Trent Rucker and Senior Austen Shelley both won matches, but fell short of placing in the tournament. Sophomore Dalton Braun wrestled well but also did not place. Trent had a very strong first year and has great potential for his next three years. Austen finished his senior season wrestling very well. His work ethic and leadership will be missed.

Junior Alex Vislosky came back strong after a tough semi-final loss to finish in 3rd place and earning the bronze medal and a state birth. Alex will wrestle in his first state tournament next week.

Lovejoy had a solid semifinal round otherwise, winning four of five and putting four men in the regional championship match. This was the most in our history. Sophomore Jakob Underwood, Junior Hunter Duncan, and Senior Johnny Dorlon all three finished as silver medalists in their respective weights.
Dorlon and Underwood will wrestle in their first state tournament this week while Duncan makes it three straight years to reach this event.

Sophomore Ralph Rucker was the fourth finalist for the Leopards and he wrestled a great match to finish as Regional Champion! Rucker avenged an earlier loss from the district finals to earn his first gold medal and a #1 seed at state this week. Rucker becomes only the second male to become a regional champion in Lovejoy history. Thomas Kotecki (class of 2013) was the first.

LHS Men's Soccer
On Friday night, the Varsity Leopard soccer team defeated the pesky Bearcats from Sherman 1-0. Weather conditions kept both teams off a tick as the blustery wind was tough to judge. Staying true to the last 4 games, the Leopards struck first, using a long pass from Trey Reiner to Max Pabin, who connected with Caleb Toomey for what turned out to the game winner. In the 2nd half, the boys knocked it around well while attacking into the wind, but failed to connect on several attempts into the box to secure the precious 2nd goal. Jackson Diamond played well in net, getting the clean sheet.
The JV Men's soccer team also defeated Sherman by a score of 4-2, going up 2-0 in the first half, and adding two more in the second. The JV boys are 3-0 in District play now.
The boys are back on the pitch after a holiday weekend on Tuesday, in Princeton. Kickoff is set for 5:30/7:15.

Lovejoy Offers Group Counseling
Lovejoy is offering group counseling for students for a variety of areas. The groups will meet weekly, during school hours, and will be facilitated by Lovejoy's Social Worker, Noelle Gove, LCSW. The overall goal of the counseling groups is to address student's social/emotional needs that may be impacting their experience and success at school. Groups are being offered, based on need, to every campus in the district, grades K-12.
If you are interested in your student participating in a group, please click here to complete the interest form. Noelle Gove will be in contact with parents regarding further details of the group and to obtain consent for student participation. This form is not a consent for counseling, but rather a survey of interest.

Lovejoy Mom Selected for 2019 Boston Marathon
Lovejoy mom, Tracy Sutherlin, is asking for your help in raising money to support the Leukemia Lymphoma Society Team in Training.
"Hi Friends, this is Tracy Sutherlin. I know you've seen me running the streets of Allen, Fairview and Lucas for many years and you know that running is my passion. I'm super excited to announce that I've been selected to be the North Texas Leukemia Lymphoma Society (LLS) Team In Training Representative at the 2019 Boston Marathon. Not only do I get to fulfill a lifelong dream of running the Boston Marathon, I get to do it for a purpose!
Every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer and every 9 minutes someone dies from one. More than 1.3 million people are living with, or are in remission from Leukemia, Lymphoma & Myeloma. Sadly, more than 1/3 of blood cancer patients do not survive 5 years after diagnosis. LLS fund's research provides patients guidance, education & support. LLS also drives advocacy for policies that protect patients access to life saving treatments.
I am running to honor and celebrate two amazing Lovejoy students. Mallory Cass and Austin Bennett. Mallory is a 7th grader at Willow Springs Middle School and was diagnosed with Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in 2014. Austin is a senior at Lovejoy High School and was diagnosed with ALL in 2017. Mallory, Austin and so many others have fought and battled to beat this disease to get across the ultimate finish line of being cancer free!
I've been given the opportunity to raise money for LLS that provides funds to champion the fight in battling this disease. As you think about your charitable giving at the end of this year (or even in 2019) and where it can have the most impact, I ask that you consider helping me in this cause by donating to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.
Please help support me as I run to support LLS and those who have been touched by cancer! Because we all have a finish line to cross!"

In the event that students need to leave campus during the school day and they drive themselves, we need parents to send an email to
[email protected]
. Please include the student's name, the date and time they need to leave, the reason, and a phone number to be used to contact you. Once we have received the email, we may call you for verification, and the email will provide us with the needed documentation for our records.
If your student wants to go home because they are not feeling well, please have them to go the school clinic to be checked out by the school nurse. This is regardless of whether they are being picked up by a parent or driving themselves.

VOE (Verification of Enrollment)
Students should request a VOE through Naviance by 12:00 pm daily for same day processing, and the form can be picked up from Ms. Bock, the lobby receptionist, after 3:00 pm. Requests made after 12:00 pm will be processed the following day.

Volunteer Background Application Now Available
For the safety of our students, a criminal history record is obtained annually for every person interested in volunteering at a LISD campus. Upon completion of the background check, applicants will be notified of approval to volunteer.
