NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS

February 18, 2019, The Arts Paper, by Lucy Gellman- "A little girl presses her nose to the aquarium glass, her body just a fraction of the wide oval window that surrounds her. Her hands reach up and out, fingers spreading as if to say a warm, wordless hello. She has company-a giant pink squid who glides through the water before her, tentacles rippling like ribbon. It fixes one pupil on her, the surrounding white of its eye almost as big as her head. Another appears behind it, making its way through the dark water..." Click HERE to read full article.

Tuesday, Feb 19, 2019 from 5:30 PM to 7:30 pm-  We are organizing an Artist Meet + Greet for individuals who wish to apply to our Open Call for  Project Proposals for City-Wide Open Studios 2019 Older But Younger , but may be looking for  collaborative partner(s).  Older But Younger seeks to humanize and prioritize an examination of how age factors into the way artists make work together today. We are looking for proposals that recognize contexts in which intergenerational collaborations already exist, as well as proposals that present opportunities  for new relationships  to form and grow. Please check the  Open Call announcement  for sources of ideas and inspiration.  If you have an idea for a project, great! You will have the opportunity to share your 3-minute elevator pitch of your idea. Not sure what you want to do, also great! You can listen to the group conversation and mingle with other artists who spark your interest. Artspace  staff will be on hand to support the ideas as they develop and answer questions.  Light refreshments will be served.
The event is free, but please register in advance  here Artspace, 50 Orange St, New Haven

BLACK & UGLY AS EVER A CHOREOPOEM AND PERFORMANCE BY PORSHA O

The New Haven Pride Center's Center Cabaret Presents Black & Ugly as Ever A Choreopoem and Performance by Porsha O. Join us at the historic Lyric Hall Theater for two incredible performances of poet, educator, organizer, and Boston's 2019 Poet Laureate Porsha Olayiwola.

Performances  will be at 6:30p and 8:30p (doors open 30 minutes before the performance begins).  GET TICKETS Tickets are $25 (or $30 at the door). Discounts for students and Center Members. Click here to buy! RSVP HERE

ABOUT THE SHOW BLACK & UGLY AS EVER is a one-person choreopoem that explores what it means to move through reality as a queer, fat, dark-skinned woman. The production utilizes original song, poetry, and movement to discover love of self in a body that occupies multiple marginalized identities. This hour-long production is split between two halves: one that scrutinizes society's norms and the other that praise the defiance of rigid normalities. Be prepared to laugh, cry, think critically and be a little uncomfortable in this dangerous love story.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Porsha Olayiwola (she/her/hers) is the 2014 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion and 2015 National Poetry Slam Champion. In 2018, Porsha was named by GK100 as one of Boston's Most Influential People of Color. She is the Artistic Director at MassLEAP, a literary non-profit organization in Massachusetts serving youth artists. She is an MFA Candidate at Emerson College and has a full length collection of poetry forthcoming in 2019 with Button Poetry. As an educator and organizer Porsha seeks to cultivate spaces for emerging artists that allow them to deepen their understanding of craft and community. She has served youth artists in the city of Boston for the last six years and continues to grow spaces for artists and audience of the art. Porsha Olayiwola is the current Poet Laureate for the city of Boston.

Join photographer Kim Weston for this 6-week photography workshop. Beginning February 6th - March 13th, this class will meet on Wednesday evenings from 7-9pm. Basic photography skills are expected. Class Fee: $20. Purchase tickets HERE

About the Workshop: This workshop is about creating and looking at photographs - how to see them, analyze them, and how to take them to get what you want. Students should come with open minds and patience. Visuals will be shown in the first part of the workshop, followed by students showing their work. Students will be asked to bring printouts of their images to be critiqued. A small body of work will be developed by the end of the workshop. Please bring your portfolio, or 4-5 printed images, and your camera to the first class.

About the Instructor:
Kim Weston is a fine art photographer with a graphic design and painters background living in New York and Connecticut. She received her BFA from Cooper Union and is a recent MFA graduate from ICP-Bard College in Advanced Photographic Practice. Photography has allowed Kim Weston to teach, freelance in the commercial industry and be a visual artist. She questions how we can see the world when illusions surround us. Art promotes presence and an opportunity to see what's true in our spirit and the discrepancy in our everyday. The gestures seen in her images are the product of chance and intention. kimwestonimages.com

VANISHING: VOLUME TWO @KLG

Kehler Liddell Gallery presents: VANISHING: VOLUME TWO, by Penrhyn and Rod Cook.

An artist talk will be held on Sunday, February 24th @ 3:00pm, with reception to follow until 6:00pm.

ABOUT THE SHOW:
During their first journey to Kenya and Tanzania three years ago, husband and wife photographers, Penrhyn and Rod Cook, were struck by the majestic beauty of the African wildlife, as well as the intense sadness they felt for the tragic fate facing the creatures: "African wildlife is vanishing. The reasons are numerous and manifesting themselves as if they were choreographed to occur in unison. ...We are not experts on the incredibly complex issues that threaten the region ...We can only attempt to visually represent what we saw and how we felt about it." The collection debuted at KLG in September 2017, and then later traveled to the New York Hall of Sciences, and other local venues. Anxious to continue their investigations, the couple returned to Kenya this past year with the specific intention of documenting the Great Migration of over 1.5 million wildebeest across the East African plains...
