'Tis the Season!
We are now down to our last 10 school days of 2019 and for the second quarter. The next two weeks are big ones both academically and for our seasonal special events (please see calendar below). While I know our Knights are looking forward to a well earned winter break, I encourage all students to remain focused and to put forth their very best efforts so they receive the grades they are capable of in the next report card.
This week we have a special holiday event scheduled every school day including our Lady Knights who are advancing in the district volleyball playoffs. All members of our school community are encouraged to attend one or more of these special occasions. The support means a great deal to the students plus every performance you see listed below represents a fun night out for the whole family. Our Knights have practiced and prepared very hard for everything you see on the schedule and I promise you that you will enjoy yourself immensely!
Have a good Monday and I hope to see you at one of our special events this week!

Our chorus students participated in the 2019 Lake Nona Carolers Community Outreach Tour and shared music throughout our community at various locations such as our elementary schools, the Veterans Community Living Center and the residents at Somerby Assisted Living Center. We are excited to give back to our community through music.

Our STEAM Knight was an evening of hands-on science, technology, engineering, art and math activities (STEAM) for students, families and community. This event included a range of medical demonstrations, wildlife awareness and OUC support. Portraits were encouraged in the photo booth with family or friends while science fair projects and Invent Lake Nona projects were on display as the center point of the evening.
Our telescopes were focused on the Moon, Jupiter and Saturn, along with artwork based on Vincent Van Gogh's The Starry Night. Seasonal music was provided by the LNMS orchestra and piano students and virtual reality was computer generated. Materials were available to make slime, and the real Orlando CSI explained a crime scene and fingerprinted the curious (just above). Race tracks were built and rearranged along with math problems (below) and flying paper airplanes by possible future engineers.
This night of exploration could not have taken place without the collaboration of the science, technology, art, music, world languages, and math departments. And we had food trucks providing refreshments to help with thirsty patrons. It was a night of many stars!

Thank you so very much to our talented orchestra students for performing for our STEAM Knight guests!

Two of our Knights also played beautifully on the piano for the guests during STEAM Knight. This was truly a magical evening and we thank everyone that turned out!

Two Businesses Step Forward to Support STEAM Knight . . .
|
It is with great appreciation that we thank Digital Memory for the photo booth at Steam Knight which was sponsored by JP Capital Realty. The photo both was a tremendous asset during the evening and we greatly appreciate both firms for making this possible. Here at the holidays, we are indeed blessed to have such kind organizations in our community.

Sixth grade art with Ms. Clermont
In Ms. Clermont's art class, 6th graders have been examining Vincent Van Gogh's The Starry Night, painted in 1889 from a room in the mental asylum. The students were encouraged to paint their own Starry Night using color schemes and outlining techniques making their own artistic decisions. The results were displayed in the foyer of the school for STEAM Knight.

Monday's Motivational Moment at the Holidays
|
OPERATION SANTA
Her name was Isabella. Her letter to Santa didn't ask for presents, clothes or anything for herself. She had one simple request, "Please bring my mommy eyes that never cry." Her mom was single and working two jobs just to get by. Eleven-year-old Isabella wanted a new bike but told Santa, "It's okay if I don't get it, but clothes for my little brother would be very appreciated." Isabella's single mom could barely make ends meet.
Although the U.S. Post Office in New York began receiving letters to Santa Claus more than 101 years ago, its involvement was made official in 1912 when Postmaster General Frank Hitchcock authorized postal employees and citizens to respond to the letters. Today, the popular holiday program is known nationwide as Operation Santa. Thousands of volunteers and ordinary people work with post offices to respond to letters from children of all ages listing their holiday wishes.
One mother wrote Santa to ask, "Please make this Christmas a happy one for my three children, it has been a tough year." USPS has a policy for "adopting" children's letters to Santa that's designed to protect their privacy.
Here's how it works:
In a time when the daily news can be discouraging, we seldom hear about the good that common citizens do to contribute to the less fortunate. The great thing about Operation Santa is you simply change your name to "Santa" and you bring a smile to a special child or family!
