Black History Month Events at Banneker-Douglass Museum
All month long the Banneker-Douglass Museum will be highlighting the accomplishments of Maryland's Black leadership from across various fields of interest. Make sure you visit their Facebook and Instagram accounts each day as they feature prominent educators, legislators, entertainers, and their accomplishments.

Follow "#BDMuseum" to keep up with all of the great happenings at the museum.

Come visit the Frederick Douglass Reading Room, as well as the permanent exhibit, which chronicles African American history in Maryland from 1633 through present day. Click here   for more information or to schedule your tour.
African American Experience Tour at the Hammond-Harwood House, Thursday!

Join Hammond-Harwood House curator, Rachel Lovett, for an African American Experience Tour at the Hammond-Harwood House. The African American Experience Tour will cover the stories of men and women, both enslaved and free, who built, maintained, and lived in Hammond-Harwood House.

A focus will be three enslaved women — Mary, Matilda, and Juliet — who worked at the house in the early to mid-19th century.
Other topics include how petitions for freeing certain enslaved men and women were handled, the aims of the American Colonization Society, and the successes and setbacks of one early African-American artist.

Winter Lecture: Rosemary Williams

Rosemary’s talk will paint a vivid image of Annapolis with tales of violent skirmishes between outlaw oyster poachers, the crabbing rage of the twentieth century, the slight-of-hand trick by the Secretary of Navy that brought the US Naval Academy to Annapolis, and the city’s Golden Age of Sailing. Stunning vintage images that chronicle Annapolis’ history and reveal its residents’ deep connection to the ever-shifting waters will complete her presentation. Learn more here .

The 2019 Winter Lecture Series at the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park will be held on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. from January 10 to February 28. You will be challenged to question and to learn by engaging speakers on eight diverse topics including maritime history, local history, science and maritime art. Admission is $10 per person for non-members.

Each Saturday in February, learn from a noted scholar about the African American experience in the Chesapeake region.

Janice Hayes-Williams is an expert on African American history in the Annapolis area, and is currently with the Office of the County Executive in Constituent Services & Community Engagement.​$12 for adults, $10 for seniors. Free for members. Learn more here .

Kimberly Walters, Kerry McClure, Nicole Foronda, and Jane Pease, HA volunteers and members of the Annapolis Living Historians, will present men’s and women’s clothing styles with a special emphasis on the time when Mary Chew Paca, William Paca’s first wife, lived in the Paca House. They will give a demonstration of how to dress for the lower, middling, and gentry classes of society, showing differences between the classes. Leadership in History Awards Nominations Due Soon!
The American Association for State and Local History wants to know about the amazing projects, programs, and people promoting the relevance of history in your community.

For over seventy years, AASLH has given Leadership in History Awards to establish and encourage standards of excellence in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of state and local history in order to make the past more meaningful to all people.

They offer awards for many different types of projects, including publications, exhibits, public programming, and more. Award winners come from all over the country, from organizations of all
kinds, sizes, and budgets.

The deadline to submit nominations for the Leadership in History Awards is March 1. Learn more here.
