African American Experience Tour at
the Hammond-Harwood House, Thursday!

Join Hammond-Harwood House curator, Rachel Lovett, for an African American Experience Tour at the Hammond-Harwood House. The African American Experience Tour will cover the stories of men and women, both enslaved and free, who built, maintained, and lived in Hammond-Harwood House.
A focus will be three enslaved women — Mary, Matilda, and Juliet — who worked at the house in the early to mid-19th century.
Other topics include how petitions for freeing certain enslaved men and women were handled, the aims of the American Colonization Society, and the successes and setbacks of one early African-American artist.

Winter Lecture: Rosemary Williams
Rosemary’s talk will paint a vivid image of Annapolis with tales of violent skirmishes between outlaw oyster poachers, the crabbing rage of the twentieth century, the slight-of-hand trick by the Secretary of Navy that brought the US Naval Academy to Annapolis, and the city’s Golden Age of Sailing. Stunning vintage images that chronicle Annapolis’ history and reveal its residents’ deep connection to the ever-shifting waters will complete her presentation. Learn more

The 2019 Winter Lecture Series at the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park will be held on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. from January 10 to February 28. You will be challenged to question and to learn by engaging speakers on eight diverse topics including maritime history, local history, science and maritime art. Admission is $10 per person for non-members.

Kimberly Walters, Kerry McClure, Nicole Foronda, and Jane Pease, HA volunteers and members of the Annapolis Living Historians, will present men’s and women’s clothing styles with a special emphasis on the time when Mary Chew Paca, William Paca’s first wife, lived in the Paca House. They will give a demonstration of how to dress for the lower, middling, and gentry classes of society, showing differences between the classes. Learn more
