Rick Warren ’78 Earns Big Game Hunting Award

The Dallas Safari Club honored Rick Warren with the 2019 Outstanding Hunting Achievement Award at a celebration held January 19 in Dallas. Rick has received numerous hunting awards, including the Africa Big Game Award for the “Big Five,” referring to five big game animals of Africa: the lion, elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros.

"The Dallas Safari Club’s selection of Rick for its Outstanding Hunter Achievement Award is all the more remarkable because he has accomplished it all in less than one decade,” said Mike Sharpe ’79. "Very simply, just as he has also done with the largest gift made to the Capital Campaign for the construction of the Lodge and the Residence Hall now occupied by Tau Chapter, Rick always 'goes big.’ It is a real pleasure to have known him for more than 40 years, to have joined him at a number of Texas ball games, and to have served alongside him as a trustee, officer and director of the Texas Kappa Sigma Educational Foundation and the Tau Trustees Educational Foundation.”

Rick is the founder of Warren Wildlife Gallery in Austin, which houses a collection of about 400 mammals and 500 exotic birds. He was honored as Tau Man of the Year in 2012 and was chosen for the Frank Erwin award in 1995 and 2010. He is a former TKSEF board president and currently serves as an officer.

“Rick’s amazing drive to pursue and complete big goals is a great example for both young Kappa Sigs and our alumni,” said Joe Bob Shirley ’84. "As one of Tau Chapter’s greatest contributors, he sets the bar for all of us.”

The Dallas Safari Club states as its mission: “To conserve wildlife and wilderness lands; to educate youth and the general public and to promote and protect the rights and interest of hunters worldwide.”
