At the Heart of Language
and Learning
For most children who are fortunate enough to receive an annual hearing screening, this is an effective step in identifying
hearing health needs.
However, a surprising nu
mber of children who need a hearing assessment the very most . . . may not get one!!
Because the signs of hearing loss are subtle and difficult to recognize, the indicators that people who are around a child are most likely to notice are
speech and language delays. Unfortunately, professionals and parents may too quickly assume that these problems can be treated through speech-language therapy, while failing to appreciate that hearing is vital for spoken language development, and that a hearing evaluation is critical for finding the cause of any delay.
Recognizing and responding to a child's hearing health needs is vital for supporting langua
ge development. It is especially important that a hearing evaluation be done any time a child is referred to, or enrolled in an early interven
tion program.
If children in your program are receiving early inte
rvention services, don't make the assumption that a h
earing evaluation was carried out. Check the child's rec
o
rd to see that hearing evaluation results are current, th
at the results are normal, or that adequate steps are being ta
ken to address hear
ing, as wel
l as other documented needs. Hearing status is one key factor that should inform the ch
i
ld's Individu
alized
Family Service Plan (IFSP) or Individualized Education Program (IEP). Help others to also remember that hearing health is at the heart of typical language development and school readiness.
