Dear Friends,

February 14th is Valentine’s Day. In these days leading up to February 14th, our culture will be awash in sentimentality. We will be surrounded by the word “love.” So, it is timely for us to consider the very idea of “love.” Surrounded by all this “love” talk and imagery, it is worth taking a moment to consider the distinctions between the type of human love celebrated on Valentine’s Day, and the divine love of God as revealed in Jesus Christ.

In John 3:16 the evangelist wrote, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.” From among the six different Greek words for love, John chose “agape” to describe how God “loves” us. Agape, in this context implies unconditional. So, God loves us unconditionally! This means God loves you, right here, right now, right now while you are reading this! God loves YOU without caveat. Stunning if we stop to consider what this means. Why should God love us? What have we done for God? What could we do for God? Can we equally return to God the love we receive?

The type of human love celebrated on Valentine’s Day is always, at some level, transactional in character. It is transactional in that we offer love, and in some way we expect a return on the offer. It may be a return of loyalty, companionship, or something else, but understood from a strictly human perspective, love is inevitably a two-way street; it is transactional! We give something and inevitably we receive something in return. We commit ourselves to the covenant of marriage, and in return we enjoy life-long companionship. We commit ourselves to a friendship, and when we are in need we know we can turn to our friend.

On the abstract level this is the phenomenon of human love. Now, you may suspect I am being cynical or pejorative about this, but that is not my intent. Rather, what I hope to express is that it is impossible NOT TO expect something in return for our love of another. So, the inherent nature of human love as a two-way street is not necessarily a bad thing, it is simply a way to acknowledge how human love works. Another way to understand this is to say simply that all human love is in some way tinged by self-interest.

Although over simplified, it is fair to say that the difference between human love (the Greek word is “Eros”) and divine love (agape) is this “tinge of self-interest”. God sent us Jesus Christ simply because He loves us. What did Christ gain by coming to humanity? The humiliation and agony of dying on the cross! Yet Christ came into the world and became one of us out of love. God loves us, simply and totally! And while we are rightly called to respond to God with our obedience, devotion, praise, and love, scripture reminds us that even in our purest moments we are still “tinged with self-interest” (Romans 7:14-25).

It is my hope you will enjoy and celebrate Valentine’s Day! It is fun, and the human love which we share with one another is in itself a precious gift from God. At the same time, I hope you will pause for a just a few minutes to see how categorically different God’s divine love for us is from our love for one another. I also   invite us to remain mindful that we are the recipients of a love we cannot adequately return, but gratefully receive; the divine love of our Lord Jesus Christ. The only way we can respond to this love is to live our   lives with an attitude of rejoicing and unceasing thanksgiving!

God Bless,
Marc

All is Well With Water of Life
Water of Life is in the miracle business. At least, that’s what the village people think every time a well is dug and people have fresh water for the first time in their lives. First comes the water; then comes the church and the hearing of the Word of God for the first time.

Now Water of Life has an additional ministry in India – saving young children who are forced to work in mines. God is working miracles through Water of Life every day:
  • 21st century slave owners in India are willingly releasing slaves from their mines.
  • Cholera has all but been eradicated from an area in Sierra Leone where high concentrations of wells have been drilled.
  • Hindu and Muslim doctors and nurses are choosing to serve in Christian medical clinics because they’ve never experienced a free clinic that was truly open to all.
  • People from Sierra Leone, Liberia and India are being baptized by the thousands.

Trinity is blessed to be a partner in mission with Water of Life.
Missions News
A Word from Mark Adams,
Our Missionary on the
Mexican Border

Immigrants are a strength of our nation and yet are often criminalized. Take, for example, the recent policy to separate immigrant children from their parents. … As we grieve the sad reality of families being separated at the border, we are grateful for the witness of Café Justo, a coffee farming cooperative that brings people together over a delicious cup of coffee. Café Justo makes it possible for families to be reunited, to be together, to stay together, to celebrate together, and to grieve together.

In the face of bad news, God calls us not only to lament but also to live out good news. For those of you who choose to live out good news through the simple act of drinking Café Justo – thank you for helping coffee farmers make a decent living for their families. For those of you who have yet to partner with these farmers, I encourage you to prayerfully consider brewing justice in your home and office.

Lynda Fredsell is now taking orders for Café Justo by email ( lfredsell@att.net ) or by phone (246-7449). Regular ($9.00) and Decaf ($10.00) Ground and beans. Medium and dark roast. Deadline – February 15th. Thank you for your continuing support!
Thank You!
Thank you, Trinity Presbyterian!

We at PYC would like to thank you for your generous support of the youth and for joining us at Bonclarken this year. Without you and your youth, we would not have such a close-knit community to help strengthen our faith in Christ. Thank you for donating your time and energy into helping our youth thrive. We would also like to thank you for your donation to Coins for the Carolinas.  We raised much more than ever expected. This will go along way towards helping those in need.

Thank you,

Kira Waters,    Joan Jones, Rosie Edwards,
PYC Clerk            Adult Moderator    Youth Moderator
Thanks so much!

Everyone enjoyed the bag of goodies! It was a generous expression of a generous people. I thank each of you for being a blessing. I love my church family.

Love,
Jean Kennett
Trinity Welcomes Trey Duncan
as Chancel Choir Director
Trey obtained his Bachelor of Science in Physics and Music from Furman University in May of 2018. While studying voice with Lisa Barksdale, she suggested he participate in the newly formed First Worship service at Trinity. He has called Trinity home ever since. Though he initially played guitar and sang in the First Worship service, Trey soon began participating in the chancel choir as a soloist and conductor. In January of 2019 he officially became the Chancel Choir Director for the traditional worship service and the Assistant Worship Leader for the First Worship service.

From the time he started playing bass in church in his hometown of Lexington, South Carolina, Trey has had a passion for worship. This took many forms, including leading worship for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at White Knoll High School and Furman University and being invited twice to play with his band in Christian music worship rallies on the state house steps in Columbia. He learned conducting from Dr. Hugh Floyd and honed this craft as the music director for the Furman University Bell Tower Boys and Furman University Mosquitoes. He currently teaches guitar, ukulele, and voice at NoteAbility Music School, and he is very excited for the opportunity to grow the Trinity choir and lead the congregation in musical worship."

Welcome to Trinity's Newest Members!

Say "Hello!" to Tom Smith. A twenty-five year resident of Marietta, he grew up in New Wilmington, Pa. Since retiring as a human resources director, Tom is enjoying his second career with The Blood Connection. He transports needed blood supplies to hospitals. Tom and Susan, his wife of forty years, are animal lovers. They have six dogs and twelve cats at their home! ( WOW!) Welcome to Trinity Tom!

Stewardship Corner
Welcome to the “Stewardship Corner!” This will be a monthly [hopefully] commentary on all things Stewardship.

This month Team Stewardship welcomes our newest team member- Katherine Christie! Katherine joins the other team members- Hugh Cunningham, Esther King, Leslie Weikle, Brian Williams, and yours truly. We look forward to serving you, the congregation, as we work together to fund God’s work at Trinity through your contributions of Time, Talent, and Treasure.

Our message for January is two-fold:

-Thanks to all for your response to the “From This Rock” campaign! Pledge participation and total pledged amounts reflected your commitment to the financial support of Trinity’s mission. And another “thanks” for the tremendous response to the recent “Chili Cook-off and Dessert Auction,” a great example of how your gifts of Time, Talent, and Treasure work together for the furtherance of God’s Kingdom.

-A reminder for all who provide financial support for God’s work at Trinity- there are a number of methods of giving designed to fit everyone’s giving preferences. For space considerations, they are not listed here but they can be found on the church website- just click on the “Giving” tab.

Thanks for reading “Stewardship Corner.” Look for future editions to focus on the many ways that you can choose to be a part of the “Trinity Experience” through your contributions of Time, Talent, and Treasure.

Dwight Hammack,
Chair-Team Stewardship

Youth News!
We seem to be on a soup theme right now! Our January service project was serving at the soup kitchen at Project Host, then there was the Chili Cook-off, and now it is time for the Soup-er Bowl collection. When we weren’t serving, eating, or collecting some form of soup, we were delving into the meaning of some popular Bible verses.

In February, the Youth Small Group lessons will be about the radical and grace filled love that God has for each of us. We will also have some much-loved social activities like ...

Trinity's Annual Chili Cook-off and Dessert Auction (Youth Mission Trip Fundraiser)
From Our Director of Christian Education and Youth
“For He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.”
                                                  Psalm 107:9

I feel fairly certain that Psalm 107:9 was not referring to chili and desserts, but I am also sure that no one left our Chili Cook-off and Dessert Auction hungry! THANK YOU to all who contributed to make this fundraising event a huge success! It takes a lot of chefs, bakers, servers, and cleaners to feed the Trinity crowd, and we appreciate each and every one of you. Together we raised $2,457.00 to support our youth on their mission trips to Nashville and Charleston this summer!

Our judges (Julie Rogers, Anna Kate Wingard, and Henry Waldrep) made the great sacrifice of tasting all 23 varieties of chili. (Who knew there could be so many chili options!) Congratulations to this year’s recipients of the Trinity Traveling Trophies:

Best Over-all: John Short  Don’t You Wish You Had Some?
Best Vegetarian: Julie Stephens Taco Chili
Spiciest: Eric Smith  Beware
Most Unique: Cathy Ronald  Chicken Chili

Congrats also to the Best Over-all runners-up: Blake Blakemore (2nd), Eric Smith (3rd), Curtis Tharpe and Ryan Huminski (tied for 4th).

Thank you to Leslie Weikle the creator of our Traveling Trophies and to Ryan Huminski for memorializing last year’s winners. (Eric Smith is trying to see how many times his name can be burned into the “Spiciest” Traveling Trophy!) Finally, thank you to Ted Huminski for the two beautiful hand-turned wooden bowls that added to our funds raised.

While not all things—or people—are as easy to love as chili and desserts, the love-themed month of February is a good reminder that we are called to share God’s love with one and all. Now that your hearts have been heated by the spicy chili and your dispositions sweetened by the delicious desserts, go forth and love each other as Christ first loved us.

In Christ’s service,
         Terri

From the Director of Music Ministry
2019 is in full swing for Trinity’s music ministry! Our first One Worship service was January 27. We combined our 9am and 11am worship teams to celebrate as the family of God His goodness and love. Our Furman friends joined us along with several other seasonal voices for a mighty choir accompanied by vocalists from our 9am worship, violin, acoustic guitar, mandolin, bass, drums and piano.

For February, here are some highlights:
Feb 3 – Communion
Feb 6 – Dress Rehearsal for Sounds of Joy (Junior Choir) 6pm
Feb 10 – Sounds of Joy (Junior Choir) 11am service
Feb 17 – Ars Orandi gathering 5pm @ Coffee Underground ( www.arsorandi.com for more info)
Feb 24 – Rehearsal for Young Women’s Ensemble after 11am service for March 10 service

We look forward to worshiping with you!
CWE and WNL Children's Programs
This past month, our children learned a lot about self-control during CWE and WNL. We hope that you saw their knowledge put into practice!

In February, the CWE and WNL life application is SERVICE: Lending a Hand to Someone Else. (Yes!!! Start them out young on this concept!) The lessons include Jesus washing the feet of the disciples (John 13:1-17), Peter encouraging all to use their gifts (1 Peter 4: 10-11), Feeding the 5,000 (John 6: 1-13), and serving for the right reason (Matthew 6: 1-4). The memory verse for the month is Mark 9:35: “Jesus sat down and called for the twelve disciples to come to Him. Then He said, ‘Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last. They must be the servant of everyone.’ ”

Join us on Sunday mornings at 10:00 am for CWE and on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm for WNL. CWE is for children in K4-5th grade. WNL is for children K-5th grade.  A nursery is provided for younger children. Join us and bring a friend!
