We've now had our first named storm in the gulf although I'm not sure when they started calling depressions Sub-Tropical storms. By watching the weather channel this past week the northern gulf should have been preparing for a Cat 5 hurricane. That being said it's always a good idea to use a few other sources such as iHurricane, hurricane software.com, Weather Underground, or Atlantic Hurricane Tracker to track any potential storms that may affect our coastal area. NOAA is forecasting a near to above average number of storms this year with 10-16 named storms 5-9 hurricanes and 1-4 major hurricanes so it looks like we will have to keep a close eye on the tropics this summer and pray that they stay away from the Texas coast this season.

While fishing a particularly slow bite this past weekend, my mind started wandering about moon phase again. Looking in my logbook, we had a great bite last May during almost the same moon phase. Over the years, I've heard lots of debate and theories about the effects of moon phase on the marlin bite here. Seems like other places like St. Thomas, the moon effect is definite, while here it is more debatable, but the effect is there.

Check out the article in Marlin Magazine regarding moon phase.....one thing I found interesting is that the Hawaiian Invitational Billfish Tournament is scheduled around the new moon, which is completely opposite to the St. Thomas bite, for example -  https://bit.ly/2kCn4pa.

It's Fishing Season!
