Dear St. Francis of Assisi School Parents and Guardians,

Tomorrow we celebrate Valentine's Day - a day of sending words of affirmation to special people in our lives.  It is easy to show our love to people who love us in return. Everyone enjoys receiving an unexpected note of appreciation or a word of gratitude for a kind deed.  Words are powerful! Yehuda Berg said, "Words are singularly the most powerful force available to humanity. We can choose to use this force constructively with words of encouragement, or destructively using words of despair.  Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate and to humble."

At St. Francis of Assisi School, we talk with the students about the power of their words and the importance of choosing their words carefully.  We recognize that students do not have to be best friends with everyone in their classroom, but we expect that all students will treat each other with dignity and respect.  In the Gospel of Matthew 5:44, Christ calls us to "love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." As a community, we spend 180 days together each year. We become very close as a community and experience the blessings and the challenges of life together.

In honor of the spirit of St. Valentine, let us work together to build a culture of positive praise and encouragement.  If we see someone having a difficult day, let us reach out in love and choose charity. From the parking lot, to volunteering on campus, and in the classrooms, let us model for our students a spirit of empathy, compassion, and collaboration.  "As I have loved you, so also you must love one another." John 13:34
