Presidential election years are a strange time for bookstores. We are collectively so consumed by the campaign, by the news, by voting, that we have hardly any bandwidth left.

When the election ends, no matter the result, we look around and realize, "hey, the world and all its wonders are still here." The bubble of the body politic pops and we go back to our daily lives. And the first thing we notice is that the holidays are upon us.

Before Christmas and Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, we celebrate that most American of holidays: Thanksgiving. This is one of the two days on the calendar that Tattered Cover actually closes its doors. Unlike some chain retailers who open on Thanksgiving Day (really?), we want our staff to be able to spend time with family and friends, to relax, to enjoy, and to reflect on those things for which we're thankful.

We do reopen our doors on Friday, November 25, to usher in the official holiday shopping season, which rolls right into Indies First Day on Small Business Saturday on November 26. This is a day to celebrate all locally-owned, indie retailers. Whether it's Tattered Cover, or Twist & Shout Records, or Bonnie Brae ice cream, or any of the thousands of Denver-area local businesses, we encourage you to shop and dine locally. You'll be glad to discover or rediscover what makes Metro Denver such a special place.

Details on our participation in Indies First Day on Small Business Saturday are below. We look forward to seeing you in our stores.

And, of course, if you have comments or questions, don't hesitate to send either one of us a note:  [email protected] or  kristen.gilligan@tatteredcover.com

Thanks, and Happy November!
Len and Kristen

Pulitzer Prize nominated author Nicholas Carr is back with another intellectually engaging and witty book about technology in the modern world. Carr's previous works include the acclaimed book  The Glass Cage: How Our Computers Are Changing Us and the  New York Times bestselling book  The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains. In  Utopia is Creepy, Carr turns his eye to the people behind the technology. This look at Silicon Valley questions whether technology is the panacea that many of its strongest proponents believe it is.  Kirkus Review notes that  Utopia is Creepy "reminds us that critical thinking is the best way to view the mixed blessings of rampant technology."

Tickets are  available now and include a copy of  Utopia is Creepy.

by Susan Berry Casey

In  Appealing for Justice Susan Casey captures both the essence of a remarkable woman and the times that shaped her. Jean Dubofsky's career and accomplishments are nothing short of brilliant, culminating in a landmark Supreme Court victory. Appealing for Justice not only chronicles Dubofsky's challenges and successes, it is a nail-biting, riveting, and sometimes shocking look at the inner workings of our justice system and the dark underbelly of American history. It goes far beyond a chronicle of Jean Dubofsky's legal accomplishments. It's an honest look at the challenges of trying to do it all as a wife, mother, daughter, and lawyer with an ultimately happy and victorious outcome. From Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow to her Supreme Court victory in a landmark gay rights case, Dubofsky's career mirrors the changes of the last half century in America - Cathy Langer, Director of Buying

by Salman Rushdie

Like on of the characters of Salman Rushdie's Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights, I am somewhat annoyed by not having my feet firmly set in reality; he when jinns and jinnias first suggest their renewed interest in the human world and he no longer can imprint the ground, I when I venture into strange fiction. However, this apocalyptic update of A Thousand and One Nights in all its fantastic splendor soon swept me up into its funnel cloud of imagination, where the mostly immoral jinn world plays havoc with the weakly moral world of humans. At the eye of the storm, is a majestic command of language and a convincing understanding of terror unleashed on the ordinary world, evidenced by this description of the strong turning on the weak like "the knife pretending to be in danger of being stabbed." A most dazzling display of imagination. - Gerald Davis, Magazine Buyer

by Tana French

Once again we find ourselves inside the Dublin Murder Squad, this time with a detective who is at odds with just bout everyone in the place except her partner, a red-haired freckled seemingly-simple, or at least naive, detective who supports her at each turn. The tale hinges on the killing of a young woman who has ties to the police going back two the disappearance of her father when she was a gawky teen. As always, French is a great storyteller and her characters are fully realized and believable. Places and names, details about Dublin and its environs, pepper the narrative with props to the verisimilitude and add spice. Her books are always delight to mystery readers and those who just like a good tale told well. The process of delving into the psychology of the victim, the murderer and the detectives investigating the case become the real drivers of this book.  - Eric Boss, Friend of Tattered Cover

by Peter Frase

Is Captain Kirk a communist? Will we all lose our jobs to the robots? Will climate change spell the end of what we've grown accustomed to calling "civilization"? Supercomputers! 3-D printing! Universal basic income! This guy's politics may not be quite my own, but if you're like me and enjoy having ideas knock about in your brain like so many pinballs, it's well worth a read. If you're a political junkie but find yourself experience mental fatigue during this political season, turn off the television and read this instead. At a mere 150 pages, you'll feel such a sense of accomplishment having polished it off in a couple of hours!  - Ryan Schleuder, Receiving

by Thomas Levenson

A very enjoyable popular science account of the end of the classic Newtonian Era of physics, and the beginning of the era of Einstein and modern physics - and the tumult that perturbed the scientific/mathematics communities at the time. Weighty subjects, but fortunately for non-engineers, no strong understanding of the math or science is required to enjoy this history. - Michael Parker, Aspen Grove Store Manager
