Remembering John "Pizzie" Romano

The St. Tammany Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees and staff are deeply saddened by the loss of John "Pizzie" Romano in December.

Mr. Romano was a member of the Foundation's Board of Trustees since inception. He was an instrumental part of a volunteer group of community leaders who formed the Foundation in 2003, understanding that in order for the hospital to continue to achieve its goals of excellence, it needed support above and beyond that provided by direct patient care.

Mr. Romano retained an annual appointment on the Board of Trustees as the Foundation liaison to the hospital's Board of Commissioners. Additionally, he served on the Foundation's executive committee, lending his wisdom and experience to help shape the vision and direction of St. Tammany Hospital Foundation.

"Over the years, Mr. Romano shared the story of the Foundation with the community, opening doors and paving the way for the Foundation to cultivate philanthropic support for the hospital," said Nicole Suhre, Foundation Executive Director, "He was instrumental in securing numerous donations and in-kind gifts that have had an immeasurable impact on St. Tammany Hospital Foundation."

Mr. Romano was a lifelong resident of Covington and also served in the U.S. Navy. Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Romano was a savvy businessman, owning the landmark downtown bar Tugy's. He also served on the Covington City Council and Planning and Zoning Commission.

Mr. Romano was a true servant leader and loyal supporter. There will never again be such a cheerleader for  St. Tammany Parish Hospital and our Foundation. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with his family and loved ones.

STH Guild Makes Milestone Donation

St. Tammany Hospital Foundation recently attended the St. Tammany Hospital Guild annual meeting, where they presented a donation to STHF for more than $65,000 from sales in the St. Tammany Parish Hospital Guild Gift Shop in 2018.

Funds donated by the Guild will go to fully support the STPH Rehab team's Opiod Interventions Program, which has recently received local, regional and national recognition, as well as pediatric enhancements, including iPads for the Pediatric Unit and PICU and rocking chairs for the New Family Center, a telestroke cart and new technology for the hospital's Public Relations staff to shoot professional quality videos and clips in order to market the hospital, its facilities, programs and stories to the community via social media, the website and more.

The Foundation is deeply humbled by the continued generosity by our STPH volunteers. As our Executive Director, Nicole Suhre, has said "The Guild turns gift shop profits into philanthropy, which is a truly remarkable thing."

The Guild has donated more than $330,000 to the Foundation since 2003.
The Benefits of Giving Stock

St. Tammany Hospital Foundation accepts donations in numerous ways from its supporters. Community support is vital to sharing in the Hospital's investment to assure continued quality healthcare for you, your family, neighbors and friends. There are several opportunities available to you that support the Foundation while providing tax and income benefits, including a transfer of securities.

Donating stock is one of the easiest ways to support St. Tammany Hospital Foundation and has many advantages. When you transfer ownership of securities to the Foundation, you not only receive a charitable income tax deduction for its fair market value, but you also eliminate capital gains tax on the appreciation (subject to IRS deduction limits). By donating stock that has appreciated for more than a year, you are actually able to give more than you would by making a cash gift.

To learn more about how to make an impact on the health of our community with a gift of stock, speak with your financial advisor or contact Nicole Suhre at 985-898-4171.

National Doctors' Day

Each year, March 30 marks National Doctors' Day. This is a day to recognize, honor and thank physicians for their lifesaving work.

St. Tammany Parish Hospital is extremely proud of its exceptional physicians, and we encourage you to recognize your physician for all that they do.

Please consider making a gift to St. Tammany Hospital Foundation in honor of your doctor, so that we can remind them how grateful we are for their work.

When you make a tribute gift in observance of National Doctors' Day, your doctor will receive a personal acknowledgement of your thoughtfulness. In addition, their name will be added to the List of Tributes located in the lobby of STPH.

There is no better way to honor the skill, commitment and compassion of a physician who has helped meet your healthcare needs than through this personal act of gratitude.

Visit sthfoundation.org/DoctorsDay or contact Doug Walker at 985-898-4174.
Employees, volunteers, donors and neighbors joined St. Tammany Parish Hospital executives, Board of Commissioners and local elected officials recently to commemorate the hospital's next expansion at a groundbreaking ceremony.

The 158,839-square foot addition will be four stories tall, and will enable the hospital to retrofit older areas currently serving patients in semi-private rooms. Ultimately, by the end of 2020, St. Tammany Parish Hospital will offer all private rooms for patient care.

As STPH breaks ground on this new expansion, the Foundation is working to fund new lifesaving, state-of-the-art technology to enhance safety, care and comfort for our patients and their families. These enhancements include a variety of technological devices. From digital care room signs and cleaning robots to mobile devices that allow nurses to review treatment plans, administer medication and document care quickly and efficiently. We are also looking to fund bedside devices that would give our patients convenient in-room access to their own treatment plan, patient education and more.

You can find more information about the STPH Strategic Growth Plan here.
