Active Shooter Training Comes to San Jose
This month the SJFD began the initial training for "active shooter" operations alongside our local law enforcement partners.
The need for this type of specialized training is an unfortunate reflection of the times we live in. SJFD
members will now be better prepared to respond to this increasing threat from terrorism and active shooter events in our community, with the ultimate goal of saving more lives!

1 dead in 2 alarm fire at apartment in East San Jose
SAN JOSE - One person died in a fire at an apartment complex in East San Jose, the fire was reported around 6:50 a.m. at the building on Foxdale Loop near Capitol Expressway. Firefighters called for a second alarm because of the size of the building and reports that someone may be trapped inside.

Recently San Jose Fire Fighters Local 230 was proud to host our newly appointed Fire Chief Robert Sapien Jr., his family, friends, and colleagues for an evening at the Fire Museum.
This special event was an opportunity to proudly welcome one of our own as the next Fire Chief of the City of San Jose. As part of the festivities the Chief placed his name, the 30th in the history of the
SJFD
, atop the Fire Fighters Memorial Bell. There it will be forever enshrined alongside his predecessors and eventual successors. Congratulations to Chief Sapien as we look forward to your leadership!

Fire heavily damages Victorian apartment complex in Downtown San Jose
SAN JOSE
-
A two-alarm fire heavily damaged a Victorian apartment complex in Downtown San Jose.
The first call came in at 3:20 a.m. as a report of smoke at the four-plex Victorian on N. 5th Street and E. Julian Street. Firefighters found flames on the second floor. It took about an hour before they had control.
Six to eight people are displaced.
No one was injured.
The Red Cross is helping out two of the occupants.

Along with emergency response, members of SJFD's Special Operations Teams worked diligently to keep the weeklong festivities safe. This included monitoring for radiological and biological attacks by our Hazardous Incidents Team (HIT29). Instagram

2 Homes Involved In 2-Alarm San Jose Alum Rock Fire
SAN JOSE - Firefighters rescued a person from a burning home in Alum Rock on after a fire was reported on Claudia Drive A second alarm was called seven minutes later because two homes were involved.

Oakland Firefighters Rescue Puppies From Burning Building
OAKLAND

Three puppies are alive after firefighters rescued them from a burning building in Oakland. After putting out the flames, fire crews noticed three puppies not breathing and proceeded to give them oxygen, the puppies are in stable condition.

San Jose Fire Fighters Rescue Hummingbird
Firefighters
from Station 14 recently encountered this hummingbird who was severely fatigued after becoming trapped and disoriented in the fire station apparatus bay. Firefighters recovered, then gently feed and nursed this little guy back to health. Eventually he flew home with a full belly and a story to share of his unplanned visit to the Fire Station. . . . California wildfires: $12.4 billion in insured losses and growing
Wildfires that devastated California last year caused at least $12.4 billion in insured losses, according to the state's insurance commissioner. Of that total, $11.4 billion came from three fires - and represents a jump of 25% from the initial loss estimate last month.
"These are unprecedented numbers," said Ricardo Lara, who was sworn in as California's insurance commissioner earlier this month.
In December, the department estimated $9.1 billion in insured losses from the three big November fires.

North Metro Fire using drones, infrared technology for ice rescues
COLORADO -As ice rescues
become more common across the Front Range, emergency departments are turning to a second set of eyes in an effort to save people faster. North Metro Fire has been using drones for about a year, but this week they added a new feature:infrared technology.
.
"What we're looking for is holes in the ice. We're looking for signs of life, which include heat signatures, which before we'd never be able to see," says firefighter Jeff Burke.
Burke is one of two drone operators at North Metro who are specially trained to use the drones in emergency situations.
"We can find people we couldn't before, and do it faster and safer than ever before."

Communications received a call reporting smoke in the area. A single engine was dispatched on a smoke investigation. A second update reported the smoke was outside and possibly a fence on fire, and then stated the fire started inside a residence on the 2nd
floor and traveled outside.
A Full1st was dispatched. The first unit arrived on scene and reported a large amount of smoke from the 2
nd
floor of the complex.
The call was upgraded to a 2
nd
alarm. The fire was placed under control after 1 hour.

Station 13 SJ District 6
Full first after receiving a call for smoke coming from the vents of a house. Engine 13 arrived and reported smoke coming from the vents and the roof. The fire was placed under control after 25 minutes.

ull first alarm after receiving a call reporting a garage fire.
Engine 8 requested a 2nd
Alarm while en-route due to a column of smoke seen from Fire Station 8.
E8 arrived on scene and reported a 3 story townhouse with a working fire on the 1
st
floor.
The fire was knocked down at 1700 hours and under control at 1727 hours.
San Jose Police were requested for traffic control.
Board up was ordered as well as Red Cross for 4 displaced residents.
SECOND ALARM
1.3.19 Teresi Ct Cir Station 10 SJ District
Multiple calls reporting a fire at a triplex. A Full First was dispatched and upgraded to a 2nd
Alarm after a report of someone possible trapped in the structure. The first arriving fire unit reported a working fire and went into rescue mode. The fire was knocked down and under control after 50 minutes SJPD was requested for traffic control, PG&E to secure the utilities, Red Cross for the six displaced residents

Station 26 SJ District 7
Multiple calls reporting a backyard shed on fire threatening a house; a Full First was dispatched at The fire was under control after 1 hour 20 minutes. Red Cross was requested for the seven displaced residents.
SECOND ALARM
Call from the site reporting a candle caught the house on fire. Multiple calls were received shortly after. A Full1st response was dispatched. The first unit arrived on scene at reported a fully involved structure. The call was upgraded to a 2nd
Alarm. The fire was under control after 1 hour.

Station 34 SJ District 5
Multiple calls reporting a structure on fire. The first arriving fire unit confirmed fire in a commercial structure. A second alarm was requested immediately. The fire was knocked down and deemed under control after 1 hour.
1.12.19 West San Carlos
Station 30 SJ District 6
Several calls reporting a tire shop on fire

The first arriving unit reported an exterior fire that extended into a tire shop.
PG & E and a standby ambulance were requested. An arson investigator was notified and the fire was deemed under control after 30 minutes.
SECOND ALARM - FATALITY FIRE
1.14.19 Foxdale Loop Station 2 SJ District 5
Two calls were received reporting an apartment on fire. While the full first units were en route, another call came in reporting someone trapped in the involved apartment. A second alarm was requested. Engine 16 arrived on scene and reported a large two story apartment complex that was fully involved with exposures threatened. There was one civilian fatality. The fire was under control after 1 hour.
1.22.19 Camino Ecco
Station 16 SJ District 7
San Jose Fire Communications dispatched a full first response after receiving multiple calls regarding a house on fire. Engine 16 arrived on scene and reported heavy flames from the bravo side of the structure. The fire was knocked down under control after 30 minutes.
1.25.19 Claudia Station 2 SJ District 5
Multiple calls reporting a house on fire in the area of Claudia and Chrisland. A Full1st was dispatched. While enroute, Engine 16 reported smoke showing. SJPD was requested for traffic control, and a precautionary ambulance was started. The first unit arrived on scene and the call was upgraded to a 2nd alarm. It was originally reported that there were two homes involved, however it was later determined to be only one structure with a large shed. One person was rescued from the home and treated on scene. The fire was knocked down and under control after 45 minutes. PGE and board up were requested, as well as Red Cross for 5 displaced residents. All appropriate notifications were made.
1.26.19 Southcreek Ct Station 27 SJ District 2
Multiple calls reporting a vehicle on fire inside a garage. A Full1st response was dispatched. Engine 27 reported smoke showing from the station. A precautionary ambulance was dispatched. The first unit arrived on scene and reported a working garage fire. The fire was knocked down and under control after 35 minutes 1507 hours. Red Cross was requested for 2 adults and 5 children.
1.26.19 San Ysidro Dr Station 18 SJ District 7
A Full1st response was dispatched to reports of a roof on fire. The first unit arrived on scene and reported an active fire with people on the roof trying to extinguish. A precautionary ambulance was requested. Red Cross responded to assist 4 displaced adults. The fire was under control after 40 minutes.
