Dr. Leifer Announces Retirement
Career at NYCPM Spanned 37 Years

Zev Leifer, PhD
., Professor of Clinical Sciences, has announced that he will cease to be a full-time faculty member on February 15, and will transition to an adjunct professor, teaching bacteriology to the January 2023 class until the end of the course in the spring, when he will retire.

Javeria Hussaini, DPM ('14)
Instructor in Medical Sciences
Dr. Hussaini grew up in New Jersey and wanted to  stay close to New York as she pursued her education. So she did - first, she went to Rutgers and received her BA in Economics/Biology in 2010. Then, wanting to work in the medical field and thinking that podiatry, with its surgery and clinical management, was a good choice, her next (and natural) choice was NYCPM, from which she graduated in 2014.

Two Events at January's Clinical Conference Aimed at
Enhancing Recruitment and Enrollment
Through the generous sponsorship and leadership of the
New York State Podiatric Medical Association (NYSPMA) and Foundation, a pre-med advisor event was held at the NYS Clinical Conference in January. Pre-med advisors from schools in the tristate area attended and got an overview of podiatric medicine; they heard from leaders in the profession, a current student, a resident, and NYCPM's
Anthony Iorio, DPM ('81), MPH (below). Feedback from the advisors from this event
 was that they learned a great deal from the event and look forward to sharing their
new-found knowledge with their students about the field of podiatric medicine. The hope is to continue to

NYCPM Faculty Celebrate with Mt. Sinai at Dr. Krishnan's Joint Holiday Party
NYCPM faculty attended an annual holiday party on December 6 sponsored by Prakash Krishnan, MD, who specializes in cardiology and interventional cardiology, and is Clinical Associate Professor in Medical Sciences at NYCPM and Associate Professor in Medicine and Cardiology at Mt. Sinai Hospital. The party was also attended by Mt. Sinai faculty from the endovascular lab and was held in the Public Hotel on the Lower East Side in Manhattan.

Don't Walk By
, a month-long series of events organized by the Rescue Alliance, serves homeless people met on the streets and on subways and invited back to a host site to receive a meal, clothing and other supplies, medical care and additional services. Each guest is invited to spend the night hosted by a partner organization. NYCPM will provide foot screenings, and distribute information at these events and is soliciting students to participate.

Library Awarded State Grant
The Sidney Druskin Memorial Library at NYCPM has been awarded a New York State Education Department CCDA (Coordinated Collection Development Aid) grant of $4,739. Chief Librarian Paul Tremblay, MLIS, said that the grant would be spent on print and online resources.

New Liaison for Alumni Relations Association
Arthur Gudeon, DPM ('60),
has been named the  new liaison with the Alumni Relations Association (ARA). A consultant, he will work closely with President Louis L. Levine, COO Joel Sturm, and ARA President Jonathan Levy ('09). His goal is to revitalize the ARA and to get more NYCPM alumni involved; his plan is to start early, with students. Dr. Gudeon maintains a practice in Queens, and has mentored scores of pre-med students.

Second Ronald L. Soave Award Goes to NYSPMA Pres. Paul Liswood, DPM ('93)
At the New York State Podiatric Medical Association (NYSPMA) downstate meeting on December 6, 2018,
Paul Liswood, DPM ('93), the organization's current president, was presented with the second
"Ronald L. Soave, DPM ('82), FACFAS Integrity and Excellence in Podiatry Award." The inscription on the award reads: "In recognition for your time and dedication to the podiatric profession and for your outstanding leadership in the NYSPMA." Dr. Liswood played a major role in podiatry's recent victory against a CMS proposal that would have discriminated greatly against podiatrists. The first award, named after Dr. Soave by NYSPMA, was presented to him at the previous December's downstate NYSPMA meeting. Source:

Class of 2019 Attains 'Significant Achievement'
Michael Trepal, DPM ('81),
FACFAS, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Academic Dean, has reported that 100% of the 92 students of the Class of 2019, who sat for the first time for the written portion of the APMLE Part II Board (CE) examinations, passed. "This result is unprecedented and is a significant achievement," he noted.
On the CSPE, or Clinical Skills Patient Encounter portion, 83 of the 92 students passed, a pass rate of 91%.

Dr. George ('72) Named to CEC
David H. George, DPM ('72)
has been named to  the Continuing Education Committee (CEC) by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) for a three-year term. Dr. George, currently an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Medical Science at NYCPM, is a former Dean of Graduate Medical Education at the College. APMWA Announces 33rd Annual Student Writing Competition
The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) has announced its 33rd Annual Student Writing Competition.
- Papers must be non-technical in nature, i.e., on any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication.
- There is no word limit. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.
- First prize: $1,000, Second prize: $750, Third prize: $500. Prizes are sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin, and include recognition in the APMA NEWS and the APMWA Newsletter. Honorable Mention Certificates may also be awarded.
- The competition is open to any enrolled podiatric student.
- Entries must be received by 4/1/19 via e-mail to [email protected].
- Entries become the property of APMWA, which may arrange publication of the entry.
