The Summer Research Initiative (SRI)
is a paid, eight-week, full-time, residential summer research program designed to encourage and enhance the diversity of scholars working in the social and behavioral science fields.
The goals of the SRI are to:
- Increase the knowledge of, and interest in, doctoral-level training in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences;
- Provide rising juniors and seniors an opportunity to learn about graduate studies and the range of research and scholarship in the social, behavioral and economic sciences at the University of Maryland;
- Provide a laboratory experience that enhances basic research knowledge and skills;
- Provide lectures, workshops, didactic exchanges, and other programming to enhance students' knowledge of the graduate application process, negotiating the academic rigors and professional and personal challenges encountered in graduate school, and developing career paths in social, behavioral and economic sciences; and
- Provide mentoring and networking opportunities for students to advance their training in the social, behavioral and economic sciences.
The SRI is part of the College's longstanding commitment to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities who pursue graduate degrees in the social, behavioral and economic sciences.
The application deadline is February 10, 2020.
Please note, the SRI has a two-part application process: the BTAA common application and the SRI supplemental application.

The African American Mayors Association Future Leaders Fellowship (FLF) Program is an eight-week, paid program which offers undergraduate students with an opportunity to learn and navigate the functions of local government. The program consists of a four-week extensive training at the AAMA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. followed by a deployment to one of the Association’s member mayors office for a hands on career building experience.

DATA Challenge 2020
Data Challenge is an annual week-long data exploration event at the University of Maryland hosted by The College of Information Studies, The School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and The Philip Merrill College of Journalism.
The UMD Data Challenge 2020 will occur from February 22-29, 2020. Participants may compete as individuals or as teams up to 4 for this challege
During the week, UMD students will gain analytical experience by solving challenging problems exploring novel datasets, build technical aptitude integrating datasets to create multidisciplinary knowledge, and obtain real-world team-building experience. This week long distributed format allows for sufficient time to evaluate, formulate a question about the dataset, and conduct dataset integration, analysis, and results preparation.

The Words of Engagement Intergroup Dialogue Program
The Words of Engagement Intergroup Dialogue Program (WEIDP) is a for-credit social justice education program that brings together students of diverse social identity groups for facilitated face-to-face conversation that enhance participants’ self- and social awareness. Utilizing theory, experiential learning, and equity frameworks, WEIDP supports participants in exploring key questions about who we are, what we know about each other, and how cultural systems of power impact our lives and relationships. The program prepares students to navigate an increasingly diverse society through relationship building across difference and taking steps, both individually and collectively, to promote equity and justice.

Are you a junior planning to pursue graduate study in the arts, humanities, or social studies?
Do you have an outstanding academic record? Do you have a high degree of financial need?
The Beinecke Scholarship Program provides graduate study scholarships in the humanities and social sciences to JUNIORS of exceptional, demonstrated academic ability who have a
high degree of financial
need as demonstrated by the FAFSA process. (For example, receiving or qualifying for a Pell Grant would indicate a high degree of financial need.)
The Beinecke program seeks highly motivated and intellectually accomplished JUNIORS who plan to pursue researched-based master's or PhD programs in the arts, humanities, or social sciences after graduation. "Junior" means a student who plans to continue full-time undergraduate study next fall 2020 and who expects to receive a baccalaureate degree between December 2020 and August 2021.
Candidates for the Beinecke Scholarship must be nominated by their university or college – the University of Maryland, College Park can nominate 1 outstanding junior annually to compete for a Beinecke Scholarship. To seek nomination, candidates must submit a complete draft of a Beinecke Scholarship application by January 17, 2020.

America Reads*America Counts*Partners in Print is a mentoring/tutoring program where more than 200 UMD students work weekly to improve the literacy and math skills of Prince George’s County Title 1 elementary school students.
We are seeking dedicated and enthusiastic college students who love working with kids and want to give back to their community. America Reads*America Counts*Partners in Print is a great way to meet new friends on campus, develop essential leadership skills, and gain valuable resume-building experience!
We are currently recruiting for each of our programs. Students can volunteer, receive academic or internship credit, or, if eligible for Federal Work Study, can be paid to work with our program! Don’t know if you have Federal Work Study? Check your Financial Aid package at

Pride Alliance, the University of Maryland’s largest LGBTQ+ student group, is seeking motivated and passionate student-leaders to serve on its leadership team for the spring and subsequent semesters! Pride Alliance is a dedicated and enthusiastic team of queer and trans students who would love to welcome you aboard. At this time, Pride Alliance has a number of positions open on the leadership team, but are more generally just asking that enthusiastic students contact them to express their interest. From there, senior leadership will schedule a chance to meet with you and discuss your passions and experiences in the hopes of finding the best fit for you on the team (this is not an interview!)
