Tech Week & 9th Annual Tech Expo

Harper's inaugural Tech Week is February 26 - March 1. Tech Week is four days of events and workshops celebrating technology and innovation.
The week kicks off with the 9th Annual Tech Expo, formerly known as "Tech Fest." This 2-hour, drop-in event will have more than 20 stations for you to explore new technologies. Some teaching tech stations to look forward to are AnswerGarden, MindMup, GoReact, Canva, Desmos, and more!

As part of Tech Week 2019, guest presenters Dr. Vickie Cook and Ray Schroeder from the University of Illinois Springfield discuss trends and technologies impacting our work and our students in 2019. Learn about tips and trends for staying relevant in changing instructional environments and engaging students and supporting their learning for jobs that may not even exist today.
Curricular infusion classroom presentations on a range of topics such as educational planning, career development, health and wellness, and diversity are now available. These workshops bring experienced academic advisors, faculty counselors, and success specialists into the classroom to guide students through goal-setting, defining their educational plan, and becoming mindful citizens.
The SAFEzone Training at Harper aims to increase the awareness, knowledge, and skills for individuals to address the challenges that exist when one wants to advocate for their LGBTQIA+, inclusive of gender identity and gender expression, peers, family members, friends, coworkers, and for themselves.

It goes without saying that we want our students to learn to think more critically. Key to this goal is developing in students a disposition to think critically.

For many of our students, however, critical thinking is a novel concept with which they have little practice. The following question stems and claim starters offer an easy way to engage students in higher-order, critical thinking.
This list is adapted from a larger, "Good Thinkers' Toolkit" created by my friend and colleague, Dr. Thomas Jackson.

Reflections on Student Success

A few years ago I had the opportunity to join one of the Communities of Practice at Harper. Our CoP was unique in that we were all adjunct faculty coming together to create a model for extended professional development. After a lot of discussion, and with help from the Academy, we chose to reflect on our own teaching practices. We perused current literature on college teaching, created teaching philosophies, and helped each other grow as educators.

Joining the Reflective Teaching Practice CoP enabled me to examine my own instructional methods. My experience using reflection inspired me to bring this practice back to my own classroom.

Faculty Retreat: A Brief History

Harper College faculty retreats have long been an integral part of faculty development. They became regular events during the 1990s partly as an outgrowth of "preferred future" initiatives introduced under the leadership of President Paul Thompson. They have gone under a wide variety of designations:

- "Adventures in Excellence"
- "On the Bleeding Edge of Teaching & Learning"
- "More Millennium Madness"
- "Rendezvous with Teaching and Learning"
