Museum celebrates Black History Month
Museum visitors are invited to learn more about local Black History at themuseum with guided tours every Thursday and select Saturdays in February. Tours start at 10:30 a.m. The first tours are set for:

City recruiting appointees for Niagara District Airport Commission
Applications to represent the City of St. Catharines on the Niagara District Airport Commission are
now open.
The City has three individuals, as well as a city councillor, who will represent the municipality on the commission. Residents successfully appointed will serve a four-year term.
The application deadline is Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. Council is expected to appoint applicants in March.
Anyone wishing to apply can fill out an application form online.
Anyone requiring assistance with the application form can contact the Office of the City Clerk.
Recruitment for the City's other advisory committees, boards and task forces is expected to begin later in February. Information on recruitment will be posted on the City's website and social media channels once the recruitment period begins.

Nominations open
for City volunteer,
good neighbour awards
There are many volunteers and good neighbours in St. Catharines who are gracious with their time to make the community a better place.
Let's give them their due: share the stories of volunteers and good neighbours in your community and honour their contributions at the City's Volunteer Recognition Night.
The City celebrates volunteers from across St. Catharines Tuesday, April 9 at Volunteer Recognition Night, a special event where the recipients of the Mayor's Volunteer of the Year Award and the Margaret and Robin MacLennan Youth Volunteer of the Year Award will be announced. This year's Volunteer Recognition Night will also include MyHoodSTC Recognition Awards, a new program designed to foster a healthier St. Catharines.
Nominations are open
for the City's volunteer awards and MyHoodSTC good neighbour awards. Nominations are due Friday, March 1.

Service disruptions for Lakeside Park
Construction to rehabilitate the Port Dalhousie piers will lead to some service disruptions at Lakeside Park, including limited parking, from now until work is completed.
Crews will use a section of the
Lakeside Park parking lot that's closest to the west pier to store materials and equipment. During the offseason, parking will be limited to about half of the Lakeside Park parking lot. Efforts will be made to maximize the amount of parking available in the area when Lakeside Park is open for the season.
Accessible parking will always be available and the service disruptions will not restrict access to the parking lot; visitors will still be able to enter and exit via Lakeport Road and Main Street.
Free parking is available at the Lakeside Park parking lot and other City parking areas within walking distance of Lakeside Park. Visitors can also park at
Ontario Jaycee Gardens Park, 543 Ontario St., and access
Rennie Park and Lakeside Park via the pedestrian bridge.
Lakeside Park visitors can also use St. Catharines Transit. The weekday 301 and evening and weekend 401 buses stop at Lock Street and Main Street, which is just a short walk from Lakeside Park. This route operates on a 30-minute frequency up until about 6 p.m. and then once an hour after that.

Hop on the bus to the St. Catharines museum
Community members are invited to get the wheels turning during one of the City's Hop on the Bus with Us trips to St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre.
Enjoy a tour and presentation, on Wednesday, Feb. 20 from noon to 3 p.m. or Thursday, Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is $15 per person and includes lunch and a free bus ride to the museum.
Free transportation is provided by the province's Ministry of Seniors Affairs - Seniors Community Grant program.
Only 45 seats are available. Reserve a spot by talking to staff at the City's older adult centres or call 905.688.5601, ext. 1554. You do not need to be an OAC member to attend.

Explore the history of Niagara Symphony Orchestra at the museum
Niagara Symphony Orchestra is curating a community exhibit in the museum's display lobby titled "Blowing Our Own Horn: The NSO at 71."
The exhibit explores the history of the symphony, which has transitioned from a community orchestra established in 1948, to a professional ensemble and features
several rarely seen artifacts and programs, including music scores, old photographs and a mix of old instruments, as well as uniquely modern educational instruments.
The exhibit will be on display until January 2020.

Vendors sought for special Makers' Market series
The St. Catharines Farmers' Market is preparing to shine a spotlight on the talents of local makers, bakers, crafters and other artisans.
On Tuesdays from February through April, the market will host a special Makers' Market series at Market Square in downtown St. Catharines. Vendors of homemade or homegrown items, from arts and crafts to food and beverages, are invited to submit an application to participate in the series. Items must be original creations, not resale items.
The first Makers' Market takes place Tuesday, Feb. 12 and will run from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The usual St. Catharines Farmers' Market will continue to run on Tuesdays from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This week, City Council approved the 2019 Capital Budget
with
$31.3 million of investments in City streets, sidewalks, parks and neighbourhoods across St. Catharines.

Council approves 2019 capital budget
City Council approved the
2019 capital budget, a $31.3 million spending program for City projects and construction. Some of the things covered under the 2019 capital budget include tree plantings, City building improvements, and road and sidewalk construction.
This year's capital budget also includes funding to install water-bottle filling stations at several City parks, and replace the ice-making equipment at Bill Burgoyne Arena.

New Facer Street neighbourhood signage to fly on hydro poles
City Council directed the City to enter into an agreement with Alectra Utilities to permit installation of signage on Alectra-owned utility poles in the Facer Street neighbourhood for the purpose of heritage, cultural and tourism marketing.
The initiative is supported by funding through the City's Facer Street Revitalization Partnership Fund.

Lakeport Road
City Council received an information report after a public meeting regarding a planning application for a six-storey mixed-use building with 63 apartment units at 102 and 104 Lakeport Rd. and 3 and 5 Avalon Place St. Council will consider the application at a future meeting.
125 Rykert St.
City Council approved planning applications
for a 10-unit townhouse development at
125 Rykert St.
10 Benfield Dr.
City Council approved a planning application to allow development of four four-storey apartment buildings and 28 townhouses at 10 Benfield Dr. and other nearby lands.

Council adds training session to Feb. 11 meeting
Special council meeting
City Council will begin the February 11 City Council meeting at 5 p.m. to include a training and education session with the City's Integrity Commissioner. The regular council meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. as usual.
Budget standing committee
City Council cancelled the budget standing committee meeting on Monday, February 11.
A budget standing committee meeting was scheduled for Wednesday March 6 at 4 p.m.

Other business
Canada Games
City Council authorized City staff to travel to Red Deer, Alberta to attend the 2019 Canada Winter Games opening ceremonies next month in preparation for the City and Niagara region to host the upcoming Summer Games in 2021
Council also delegated the authority to approve any out-of-province travel for staff that can be accommodated in the associated operating budget to the Chief Administrative Officer and the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer.
Integrity commissioner
City Council re-appointed John Mascarin of the law firm Aird and Berlis LLP as the Integrity Commissioner for the City of St. Catharines for this term of Council.
Port Dalhousie piers
City Council appointed Coun. Carlos Garcia to a stakeholder liaison task force on the rehabilitation of harbour infrastructure.
Niagara Symphony
City Council granted a two-year extension to the Niagara Symphony Association's line of credit guarantee by the City of St. Catharines in the amount of $60,000.
