 LASP Interns Say Goodbye
"I went home everyday feeling that I made a positive impact."
LASP interns  Zane Johnson (L) and Barret Claunch (R).

LASP sends a big thank you to three impressive interns. We will miss them as they head back to school.

Barret Claunch, a rising 2L at Rutgers-Camden School of Law, interned at LASP for 6 months, working on assignments related to removing barriers to employment, primarily expunging criminal records and drafting name change petitions.

"At LASP I developed skills in client interaction, courtroom procedure, case management, presentations and legal writing. But the best part of my experience was interacting with clients, seeing their gratitude firsthand, and knowing that we made a difference in their lives. I went home every day feeling that I made a positive impact on someone's life, and this is exactly the reason I am pursuing a career in public interest law," said Mr. Claunch.

Zane Johnson, a rising 3L at Temple University's Beasley School of Law, spent busy days working on research assignments related to bankruptcy, drafting court documents related to mortgage foreclosure, and conducting client intake during his two months at LASP.

"Working at LASP exposed me to the wide range of legal issues facing those who are economically disadvantaged. I've realized the importance of organizations that provide free legal services, which has strengthened my resolve to advocate on behalf of those who can't afford to pay for a lawyer themselves," said Mr. Johnson.

LASP intern Kevin Prucino.

Kevin Prucino, a rising 3L at the Pennsylvania State Dickinson School of Law, worked on projects in a multitude of civil legal aid areas including Family Law, Housing, Bankruptcy, Public Benefits and Elder Law during his summer at LASP's Delaware County office.

"I will take away many things from my experience at LASP, but most importantly an appreciation and respect for the hard work the staff at this office does every day, the satisfaction from helping those who are in need, and the incredible amount of experience, teaching, and advice provided to me by my coworkers," said Mr. Prucino.

Survivors of Domestic Violence May Enroll at Healthcare.gov at Any Time

No Need to Wait for Open Enrollment

Did you know ...  Survivors of domestic violence may apply for health care insurance for themselves and their families through healthcare.gov at any time. They do not need to wait for Open Enrollment.  This is a policy change that was implemented in June 2015. Survivors qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. The SEP allows 60 days to enroll in a Marketplace plan.

Consumers should contact the Marketplace Call Center and share that they are a "survivor of DV." To learn more about this policy change, and for details on the application process, click here

"Breaking the Chains of Bondage"

The Collateral Consequences of Incarceration

Deborah Steeves, Esq., Staff Attorney in LASP's Chester County office, presented on the Pennsylvania pardon and expungement process at the Unified Criminal Justice Conference - "Breaking the Chains of Bondage" -  in Reading, PA.  The conference, held July 20 -21, focused on the collateral consequences of incarceration in Pennsylvania and drew an audience of formerly incarcerated persons, their families and supporters. Lt. Governor Michael J. Stack was the keynote speaker on the conference's first day.

"We were given great news by the Lt. Governor," said Ms. Steeves. "As Chairman of the Board of Pardons, he hopes to streamline the pardon process with more electronic submissions, and cut the backlog and lengthy waiting times by December of this year."

Interviews, training and workshops for those formerly incarcerated were available on the second day of the conference.
