Welcome
Dear ,

Yikes, winter is here! How did that happen and what happened to fall? Okay, no complaining, right? Well, the good news is that snowmaking at the mountains is in full swing and most of the major ski areas are scheduled to open November 23rd. Scuttlebutt around town is that may even happen earlier if Mother Nature lives up to the forecast.

Before I get into the "business" of the newsletter, I want to share with you a photo of a beautiful bull moose I saw the other day in Landgrove. It was ambling up the road in front of me until it heard my car and even then it didn't seem too concerned with anyone or anything! It was simply enjoying an evening stroll before the snow storm that followed. What a magnificent creature!

Now, back to business . . . With a great winter on tap for the 2018/2019 season, we are equally excited about a busy real estate market. Mary Mitchell Miller Real Estate is actively looking for new residential listings and we would welcome the opportunity to talk with you about listing your property for sale. If you've been thinking about it, now is the time to make a move. Our inventory is low, prices seem stable and there are buyers looking in ALL price ranges. Please give us a call at (802)824-3176.

Be well and keep in touch. And, have a wonderful holiday season and stay safe throughout the winter.

"Freedom and Unity: the Vermont Story" Documentary Series to be Shown in South Londonderry

The Londonderry Arts and Historical Society, the Weston Historical Society and Friends of the West River Trail are teaming up to present "Freedom and Unity: the Vermont Story" over the next few months at the South Londonderry Depot.

Freedom and Unity is the Vermont State motto and this award-winning six-part documentary examines the social, political and cultural roots of Vermont history. The first two episodes will be shown in November and the remaining four episodes will be shown in 2019.
* Thursday, Nov. 15 - Part 1: "A Very New Idea" - Explores the roots from which the future state of Vermont grew, from Samuel Champlain to the Civil War.
* Thursday, Nov. 29 - Part 2: "Under the Surface" - Yes, quarrying, but also about social movements that have belied Vermont's bucolic image.

All shows will be at 7 PM at the South Londonderry Railroad Depot on Route 100 in the center of town. Admission is free but donations are gladly accepted and appreciated. For more information on the movie visit the Vermont movie website (click here) or listen to this story from Vermont Public Radio (click here)

Local Ski Areas Update
One of the best website to stay up-to-date on what is happening at Vermont's ski areas is Ski Vermont (Vermont Ski Areas Association). Enjoy these updates from Ski Vermont on activities at our local mountains (Bromely, Magic, Okemo and Stratton).

Bromley Mountain: Bromley has announced a new partnership with Arena Snowparks. They'll collaborate to create a family-friendly progression park for all skill levels, green to black, with all new features and a wicked mid-season rebuild. Bromely didn't stop at upgrading its park; the resort also improved its off-slope experience by expanding its events calendar, plus made some minor renovations and adjustments to the Wild Boar Tavern (located at the base of the mountain), to create a more fun, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere for everyone.

Magic Mountain: The new ownership at Magic continues its capital investment in Vermont's throwback ski area. After winning Liftopia's award for best ski area in North America for the second year in a row, Ski Magic LLC continues to invest in its counter-cultural ski and ride experience. Off-season projects include installing a new base-to- mid mountain double chair (the "Green Lift") which helps broaden the accessibility of Magic's classic terrain to young families with novice and intermediate level skiers. In combination with more snowmaking, this new lift should allow Magic to open far earlier in the season-think Thanksgiving-if cold weather cooperates. In addition, Magic has purchased a fixed-grip Quad lift from Stratton which will significantly increase uphill capacity for years to come once it gets Vermont state permitting approval by the 2019/20 season. Also, this fall, Magic will be increasing its access to more water for more snowmaking coverage with a new pump house for withdrawal from the nearby Thompsonburg Brook.

Okemo Mountain Resort: Okemo is now an Epic resort. On June 4, 2018, Vail Resorts, Inc. announced that it had entered into an agreement to purchase Triple Peaks, LLC, the parent company of Okemo Mountain Resort in Vermont, Mount Sunapee Resort in New Hampshire, and Crested Butte Mountain Resort in Colorado. The announcement also included, as part of a separate transaction, the purchase of Stevens Pass, in Washington. Vail Resorts plans to invest $35 million, over the next two years, across the four resorts to continue to elevate the guest experience. The 2018-19 Epic Pass, Epic Local Pass, Epic Australia Pass, and Epic Military Pass include unlimited and unrestricted access to all three resorts, with seven and four unrestricted days for the Epic 7 Day and Epic 4 Day passes, respectively. Vail Resorts will continue to honor previously sold 2018-19 season pass products for Okemo.

Stratton Mountain Resort: Work is well underway on Stratton's new Snow Bowl lift, the major project in this year's $10 million-capital plan. The high-speed quad is positioned to minimize wind impact with lower towers and built with a parking rail for all 98 chairs to combat overnight icing. With a 1,000-foot-per-minute speed, ride time is reduced from 14 to five minutes. Plus, the top ramp will provide smoother access to Mike's Way, a beginner run from the summit of southern-Vermont's highest peak, and the old Poma-line trail will now be officially listed on the trail map, bringing the count to 99.

Architectural Primer

Lots of folks are curious about Vermont's most common architectural styles and I found this interesting graphic on one of the many realtor websites I enjoy. It does not include two styles we often see here and those are the classic ski chalet and the post & beam or timber-frame contemporary. Nonetheless, this information graphic is informative and I thought I'd share it with you. Click on the photo for access to the original graphic, where you will be able to "drill down" into the styles a little further.

Green Mountain Gourmet

Thanksgiving
Claudia's Cranberry Sauce
Makes about 2 cups

12-ounce bag fresh cranberries, rinsed
1/2 cup Vermont maple syrup
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 cup of water
1/2 cup orange juice
1-1½ tablespoons of orange zest (one orange)
Optional: we like to substitute 1/2 cup port wine (ruby works well) for the water!
  • Place all ingredients (EXCEPT the orange zest) into a medium saucepan.
  • Whisk well and bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat to a gentle "rolling" boil and cook for about 30 minutes, stirring often. The mixture should start to thicken by that time but based on where you are (and humidity) you may need more or less time.
  • Add the zest and stir well to thoroughly mix.
  • Allow to cool completely, cover and refrigerate for up to one week.
