Research and Presentations
Associate Professor Mugur Geana s research Embodied Cognition: The impact of a chronic health condition on message processing has been accepted for presentation at the 69th Annual ICA Conference in Washington, D.C. The study, conducted in collaboration with Texas Tech s Media Mind Insights Laboratory, explores the impact of chronic morphological and functional brain changes due to diabetes on the processing of health messages. KU graduate students Yuchen Liu and Philip Maschke are members of the KU team working on this collaborative project.

Assistant Professor Joseph Erba is the first author on the ICA-accepted paper Taking sides, and knowing it: Exploring the effects of race, gender and frame on white millennials’ racial attitudes and online engagement .” The study, conducted in CEHCUP’s Experimental Research Media Laboratory, used eye-tracking technology to quantify how visual attention to tweets, as well as race, gender and frame influences racial attitudes of Twitter users. Doctoral student Yuchen Liu   and Associate Professor Mugur Geana are co-authors of the study.

An analysis of Twitter content surrounding the 2017 Niger ambush, a research paper by master s student Melody Alexander , has been accepted for presentation at the  69th Annual ICA Conference in Washington, D.C . The innovative study uses a qualitative approach to evaluate Twitter users attitudes and opinions surrounding the tragic death of  Staff Sgt. Jeremiah W. Johnson. The paper is the result of a class project developed while Alexander was taking Dr. Geana’s   J803 research course.

Would you like to learn more about experimental research, develop novel laboratory studies to enhance your research agenda, or actively get involved in current projects on the psychological impact of mediated messages? Undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty are welcome to join Associate Professor Mugur Geana on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019, at 5:15 p.m. at the Experimental Research Media Laboratory (SF 116) to start the creation of an Experimental Research Club for the J-School. This first meeting aims to explore the level of interest, brainstorm on the name of the club, provide information about available experimental equipment, discuss members’ interests, and share information on current projects that could benefit club members.
