Headmaster Letter
Dear North Phoenix Prep Families,
Let me encourage you to pour a cup of coffee and read
this article on reading and brain science
. "The human brain isn't wired to read," according to the article, "Kids must explicitly be taught how to connect sounds with letters--phonics." And wouldn't you know that phonics is precisely what our friends and colleagues at the Archway level teach.
One of the ironies of being in the classical educational world is that cutting-edge science keeps demonstrating the effectiveness of ancient pedagogical methods. What we've been doing all along is then suddenly rediscovered to the amazement of those who had left it behind. The famous Roman educator, Quintilian, promoted phonics as the best method of reading instruction in the first century A.D. It was not new then, and it's not new now. But it
works
.
Phonics is just one of many such examples. That's why we are not taken in by the latest educational fads or technological doo-dads at North Phoenix Prep. The education we provide is tried and true, both timely and timeless. It's not that we resist innovation or improvement. By no means! But by remaining present to the tradition that's been handed down to us, we seek to make prudent judgments about what is--and is not--a real innovation.
With Devotion,
Headmaster Weinhold
