  • D'var Torah- Explanation of the Torah portion. 
  • Parasha - The weekly Torah portion.
  • Erev- The evening before.  All Jewish holidays, including Shabbat, begin at sundown the evening before the holiday.
  • P'sukei D'Zimrah- Introductory psalms chanted before Shacharit.
  • Shaharit- The morning service.
  • Minha- The afternoon service.
  • Maariv- The evening service.
  • Ashrei- A prayer written in an alphabetic acrostic frequently chanted by younger children.
  • Kiddush- A prayer that sets aside Shabbat as special.  It is recited over a cup of wine.  Also, a light meal at the synagogue after the Shabbat morning service.
  • Havdalah- A prayer recited at the end of Shabbat that separates Shabbat from the rest of the week.  The prayer is recited over spices, a cup of wine and a special braided candle
