Good morning Grenadiers! I hope this finds everyone returning from a terrific weekend and ready to kickoff the first full school week of February. In this week's College and Career Center update below, please be sure to take particular note of any upcoming deadlines and special events.

As a reminder to all of our Colonial parents and guardians, our Annual Parent Survey is now available online. All responses are kept anonymous. We will use the feedback this year in our school improvement plans. So if you have a student at CHS, kindly take a few minutes to answer the survey this week.

Have a nice morning.

Pictured very top: "Ms. Duque (support services clerk) is one of the hardest workers at Colonial. No I am not just saying this because I am afraid of her in any way shape or form! She takes on multiple roles here and exceeds all expectations. Whenever I need something, she is on it and willing to help in any way and has never snapped at me once. Anyways, here's to our MVP - Ms. Duque for being there for us. Thank you."

Family Involvement

Parent Academy Curriculum Night on the Freshman Campus last Thursday was a tremendous success. Parents received information on electives, magnet programs, and high school graduation requirements.

Colonial's Spirit Night was an unforgettable time with future students, students, alumni, parents, teachers, and administrators sharing Grenadier pride, stories, and barbecue. A special thanks to Sonny's Barbecue. It's Great To Be A Grenadier! (Above: several Colonial family members pictured with Principal Martinez.)

A record number of students were selected for the All-County Band this year. Christopher Encarnacion, Ramdy Cabrera, Yariel Laureano, Marshall Harmon, Giovanna Palladino, and Sean DeCrotie represented Colonial High School very well. They got to work with world renowned conducting clinicians and put on a marvelous performance!

Pausing to Thank the Clerical Staff
We recently passed 100 days of school for 2018-19. Colonial celebrated the clerical staff who do so much to make daily high school operations seamless, efficient, and customer-service oriented!

Meet Ms. Samantha Levy, CHS History Teacher

My name is Samantha Levy and I am a graduate from UCF's Department of History. I have enjoyed doing many things in the history world such as volunteering at the museum in downtown Orlando and working on the Florida Historical Quarterly as an intern. I also have a few pets, all named after events and places in history; so history is my world. I am very excited to see where Colonial High School takes me in the future and I have been amazed by the people here already!

Local Business Support
Leslie's Pool Supplies offers a big hand to our ESE classroom.

Colonial would like to give a big thank you to Leslie's Pool Supplies for donating rafts to our Participatory ESE classroom! Leslie's teamed up with Ms. Minnear to figure out which rafts would work best for our students who are physically impaired and need safe positioning, along with rafts that work as alternative seating for our more energetic learners!

Thank you so much for giving back to your community in such a fun way!

College and Career Center Update
By Mr. Thompson, CHS College and Career Specialist

Important Reminders for Seniors
Attention Colonial seniors and parents/guardians of seniors - two very important applications opened up last October 1st. Both applications can help your senior earn scholarships and/or grants to help pay for college. Below is a brief description of each:

1. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA application will help some students qualify for up to $6,000.00 in Pell Grant (money from the Federal Government that does not need to be paid back) or additional institutional aid. You will need a copy of the parents/guardians 2017 taxes to complete this application. The Pell Grant is need-based; based on income so some families may or may not qualify. It is best for every family to complete the FAFSA as institutions may be able to provide additional institutional aid, need or merit based, if the FAFSA is on file -

* For help with completing the FAFSA application, please take a look at this resource - Click here

** Students will need to create an FSA ID username and password prior to starting the FAFSA application. The FSA ID serves as an electronic signature in order to submit the FAFSA application via the website. Each senior should create his/her own FSA ID username and password as one or both parents/guardians should as well - Click here

2. Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA). The FFAA must be completed in order for students to receive the Bright Futures scholarship as well as many other scholarships and grants the state of Florida may be able to offer. Students must complete this application as soon as possible and must continue to work on meeting all eligibility requirements for Bright Futures prior to the end of their senior year. Please understand there are other scholarships other than Bright Futures a student may qualify for even if they do not meet the requirements for Bright Futures - Click here

My Week with the Lil' Grenadier . . .
Saludos Queridos Granaderos!

Ms. Espinet, thank you for your kind words and for allowing me to share a week with our Lil' Grenadier. We had an amazing week!

Above and just below:
Lil' Grenadier in action! His week involved challenging, motivating and encouraging my students to never give up, to always do their best in everything they do, and to take pride in their work.

Lil' Grenadier collaborating and sharing with our awesome World Languages Department.

Lil' Grenadier also took part in my ESOL Adult Class. Helping our community members reach their goals is extremely rewarding.

He joined after school tutoring and even made it to cheer for and support the CHS girls' weightlifting team on Thursday night.

I love my Grenadier family!

Ms. PĂ©rez

"Food For Thought"

Daily attendance is the number 1 leading indicator of student success. Hopefully last night's Super Bowl game will not impact any of today's attendance figures. It appears as though Orange County and most of Florida was cheering on the New England Patriots Sunday evening.

Closing Image for the Week . . .

Last Friday began Black History Month across the United States. The Great Migration was the relocation of more than 6 million African Americans from the rural South to the cities of the North, Midwest and West from about 1916 to 1970.
