Dear North Phoenix Prep Families,

Welcome back! We launched into a new semester last week with Student-Led Conferences, a Pin and Blazer Ceremony for our Juniors and Seniors, and an Alumni Panel for all of our high school students. What a week!

During the Pin and Blazer Ceremony, I referred to a distinction that author David Brooks makes in his bestselling book,  The Road to Character . Brooks distinguishes between "resume virtues" and "eulogy virtues." The resume virtues are what one cultivates when one aims at utilitarian success. Building one's professional skills is important, to be sure, but one's resume is not the same as one's character. At our Academy, we aim to cultivate eulogy virtues. These are virtues such as friendship, self-sacrifice, moral courage, and integrity of character. 

It takes time to develop these virtues. In fact, it takes the whole of one's life. Even then, these virtues are not fully complete. Yet we strive to their perfection nonetheless, because we believe that human happiness lies in eulogy virtue much more than in resume virtue. As we begin this second semester together at North Phoenix Prep, let us be ever vigilant in the cultivation of eulogy virtue. Let us direct the hearts and minds of our students toward the interior moral drama of self-knowledge and self-improvement, and let us direct them away from the shallow waters of self-satisfaction.

~Senior Thesis~
The culminating project for an Academy student is the senior thesis. At the end of their junior year, the students select a field of inquiry from the curriculum – literature, philosophy, math, science, the arts – and then they select a faculty member to act as his or her thesis advisor. The thesis is an exploration of one of the “Six Great Ideas” of humanity summarized as Truth, Beauty, Goodness, Justice, Liberty, and Equality.
Start to finish process of the senior thesis is quite the feat. From the selection of readings, directed study, note-taking, and conversation with the advisor, the writing of the thesis in sections, with the advisor offering feedback and guidance at each successive stage.
The thesis is not a research paper, and it should not attempt to prove a specific point. Rather, the senior is asked to logically develop and assertively present his or her own philosophy on a topic of personal interest derived from the chosen texts. The thesis culminates with the senior defending his or her final draft in front of a committee of three faculty members. Completing the senior thesis is one of the biggest accomplishments of our North Phoenix Prep scholars.

Many clubs are continuing from 1st semester, though registration is required as enrollment does not automatically roll over.

Registration opens January 14th with clubs beginning the week of January 22nd.

Gladiators the time is now to register for spring sports. Go to www.northphoenixprepathletics.com to register for boys and girls high school track, boys and girls middle school track, boys and girls middle school tennis, or boys and girls middle school basketball. 
Great Hearts North Phoenix Community Service Day

On January 26 t h , 2019 there will be 2 great opportunities to serve the school campus and the local community. From 9am – 12pm, you are invited to come to the Great Hearts North Phoenix campus and either help with rock/ gravel removal throughout the campus or to help make sack lunches for the Phoenix Rescue Mission. Details below:

  • When: Saturday, January 26th from 9am – 12pm
  • Where: Great Hearts North Phoenix Campus
  • Who: Anyone in the Community willing to help!
  • What/ Why: The rocks around the campus have become an issue for cleanliness and safety. The rock removal project will involve using shovels, brooms and wheelbarrows to collect all of the rocks and gravel around the school campus and disperse them to other needed areas. The plan for the future is to replace the rocks with pavers or turf. The sack lunch project is to benefit the Phoenix Rescue Mission which feeds needy families throughout the Phoenix area.
