TSIC Students and Mentors Give Back To The Community
Take Stock in Children Students at the Metropolitan Ministries Volunteer Event

Metropolitan Ministries Volunteer Opportunity:
On Friday, June 22, students and mentors from the Take Stock in Children program participated in a volunteer event for Metropolitan Ministries. Students and mentors either worked in the kitchen, retail store, or for the outreach effort. They received four hours of community service and collaborated with the Metropolitan Ministries staff and volunteers. At this event, TSIC students also had the opportunity to meet our new College Success Coaches: Jayson, Mari, and Wildens!

July Mentor of the Month
Joe Gross

1. How did you become involved with mentoring through the Hillsborough Education Foundation?
During a 2004 volunteer recruitment, a Hillsborough Education Foundation representative described a program that could result in students receiving a college scholarship. Hearing about the program sparked my interest in the foundation. Four mentees and fourteen years later, my enthusiasm has only grown.

2. What has been the most rewarding part of mentoring?
Watching former mentees reap the rewards of their efforts has been especially fulfilling. Mentoring is one of the few opportunities that allows for a generational bridge that greatly benefits both participants.

3. What do you believe is the key to being a quality mentor?
Reliability in weekly meetings and the constant pursuit of meaningful sessions are key. Helpful tools such as the Skills for Life booklet provide a framework for engaging interactions.

4. When you are not working with students, how do you prefer to spend your free time?
My weekends often involve environmental projects such as cleanups, tree plantings and beautification efforts as a Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful trustee and master gardener.

5. What do you hope your mentee will learn from you?
I would be quite satisfied if I could instill in my current mentee, Diego Sanchez, the virtues of patience, the pursuit of lifelong learning, and a responsibility to volunteer in the community.

Skills For Life Report

July: A Message to Our Mentors

From all of us at the Hillsborough Education Foundation, we would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation for your efforts to mentor a future college scholar. Supporting, encouraging, and caring for our students by helping them set goals, build positive values, and develop academic skills will exponentially help them realize their full potential.

Through your mentoring sessions, it is also important that you focus on the development of your student's "soft skills." These skills include invaluable attributes, such as communication, decision-making, teamwork, strong work ethic, initiative, and interpersonal skills. It is these "soft skills" which often enable a person to advance in various aspects of their lives, including their careers and relationships.

When you meet with your student again in the next school year, encourage your student to start doing in addition to listening. Try to engage them in a variety of ways that will increase the likelihood of them not only learning, but also retaining and applying the information. Also repeat the values that you want to instill in them, as it often takes repeated exposure to something before it is retained. Get creative and offer the same concept from a different point of view. Encourage your student to express their own thoughts and values throughout your mentoring sessions as well.

The  Skills for Life   Toolkit is dedicated to the development and improvement of soft skills. The Toolkit includes information and activities on valuable soft skills, such as communication, positive attitude, adaptability, teamwork, and critical thinking.

If you have not taken advantage of the Skills for Life toolkit, we recommend contacting  William Dailey ( [email protected]) to receive a hard copy .  Otherwise, please refer to our digital download option list below. If you decide to use it or are currently doing so, please provide us your feedback so we may continue to refine and improve this resource for our mentors and mentees.
Mentor Recruitment Alert

Make an Even Bigger Impact:
The TSIC Team is hard at work recruiting new mentors for the upcoming school year and we could use your help! We need mentors all throughout Hillsborough County who are willing to work with a deserving middle or high school student and serve as an adult role model. As a current mentor, you have the insider knowledge of just how rewarding mentoring can be. We encourage you to share your experiences of mentoring with others so we can collectively make a bigger impact on the students we serve.

Do you have a friend, relative, or coworker who you think has the potential to be an incredible mentor? Share them with us! Let them know about what we do here at the Hillsborough Education Foundation and encourage them to join our mentoring team. If you know of a business, group, or organization that you think would be interested in getting involved with us, we would love to come speak about our program!

Feel free to direct interested mentors to our website where they can submit an application. Or, if they want more information about our mentoring program, encourage them to contact Anna Laird via email

As always, thank you for everything that you do to support us. We couldn't do it without you!
