I am writing this as the threat of Hurricane Florence bears down on our neighbors in the southern coastal states, and I am reminded of how very fortunate we here in Northern New England are to be relatively immune from weather-related disasters. Sure, we have snow on the ground for 6+ months of the year, and it can be bitterly cold for weeks on end, and we have to shovel lots and lots and lots of snow . . . but our homes, our families and our communities remain safe and intact. We hope that the storm is less severe than predicted, the damage to be less impactful and above all we pray for the health and safety of the residents of the areas under watch.
Ironically (or perhaps not), September is National Preparedness Month. And while we here in Vermont don't face the same threats from weather-related and natural disasters, it is important to be prepared. Even if it's just for a long power outage. I'm pleased to share some information in this regard in the attached newsletter. As the Boy Scouts say, Be Prepared!
In other news, the summer real estate season is winding down and, while business was busier this summer than last summer, it could still stand some improvement! September is National Preparedness Month!
|
We're in the middle of the 2018 hurricane and tropical storm season, and although that rarely affects us here in Vermont, it's a great reminder that winter is just around the corner and September is the perfect time to get ourselves and our homes ready for an emergency.
Here are some simple helpful tips that everyone can easily tackle to help you weather any storm that might come your way.
- Make sure your home and belongings are adequately and appropriately insured.
- Create a family communication and evacuation plan.
- Prepare an inventory of your belongings (and be sure to have lots of photos and videos).
- Create an Emergency Contact List with telephone numbers and email addresses for family, friends and neighbors.
- Put together and maintain an Emergency Supply Kit (see below).
- Keep a roadside emergency kit in your car.
- Buy a battery- or solar-powered radio.
And, finally, always remember to call 911 if there is ever a true emergency!

I was excited to see that the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) unveiled yesterday a new Forever 50¢ stamp honoring First Responders!
Many of you know that my husband John and I are both Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMT) with the Londonderry Volunteer Rescue Squad, our local ambulance and rescue service. John is also a member of the South Londonderry Champion 5 Fire Department and is currently serving as its President.
According to USPS, this stamp recognizes "the men and women - including firefighters, law enforcement officers, and emergency medical service professionals - who respond to critical situations with skill, dedication, and uncommon bravery. Fire, medical emergencies, accidents, and violent crimes require us to look to those who possess the training and knowledge to treat the injured, rescue the endangered, and restore safety and order."
Thank you USPS for recognizing the service of the fine men and women of our local fire and EMS services and those volunteers and professionals serving around the country as well!!

Vermont Antiques Week will run from September 27 - 30 and consists of five well-respected antique shows that showcase over 175 local, regional, and national antique dealers.

Weston Colonial Crafts Day - September 15
|
|
On Saturday, September 15, between the hours of 11 and 4, the Weston Historical Society will present their 6th Colonial Craft Day on their museum campus, just north of the Weston Green on Route 100. Skills of the 18th and 19th centuries will be demonstrated, and tools and machinery of the period will be in operation and on display.
Favorites from prior years will be on hand:
* Master Tinsmith David Claggett, whose colonial reproductions are on display in America's finest Museums...and in Weston.
* Cooper Glenn Lael will demonstrate the skills used in making barrels and the 18th century methods of peeling apples and pressing them into

cider always attracts a crowd. Bring your own apples and take a turn at pressing your own cider.
* Lace-maker Donna Faturos will be demonstrating and explaining her skill.
* Basket weaver Ann McClaran will be on hand with demonstrations.
* Johnathon Bigelow will be hewing beams out of logs and explaining the methods of post-and-beam/mortise and tenon construction favored by our colonial forefathers.
Weston's Farrar-Mansur House Museum, an historic homestead and tavern dating from 1797, will be open for tours. At the Mill Museum, Weston's famous Grist Mill will be grinding corn, the hit-and miss engine will be puffing away and the operation of the Lane Shingle Maker will be explained. Don't miss seeing David Claggett's exquisite restored tinker's wagon, housed in the Mill. It might be out last opportunity to present this remarkable piece of Americana. And, finally,Maya Drummond and Garry Sharon will provide some "old time" fiddle music through the day.
Colonial Craft Day is always educational, always entertaining for the whole family. Please join the fun. There is no admission charge; voluntary donations are greatly appreciated.

The Independent Television Festival (ITVFest)

What is ITVFest? If instead of making a film, you've created an episodic series (aka, a TV show) and you want to showcase it to TV executives, agents and producers you have limited options. There are a thousand film festivals, but they don't accept episodic shows. So where do you take your series to be seen? You take it to ITVFest.
ITVFest is a worldwide community of television creators, executives, agents and fans responsible for discovering the best new television programs created on independent (aka, non-network) budgets. Throughout the year from New York to Los Angeles and places in between, a global network of creatives, executives and fans gather for seminars, screenings and retreats. It all culminates at the week-long festival in Manchester in October.
ITVFest is an open public festival and everyone is invited! It is not just for entertainment industry folks. If you enjoy film festivals, arts festivals, and seeing the world's best creative talent, then ITVFest is for you!

Big Buzz Chainsaw Carving Festival - Okemo's Jackson Gore will host the 2018 Big Buzz Chainsaw Carving Festival where chainsaw Carvers from around the country and across the world join together to carve over the Columbus Day Weekend. A great chance to watch artists in their natural environment, get inspired to create your own sculptures, purchase a new piece or simply walk around and enjoy the art! Artists will be milling about, looking to talk with families or show you their latest work. Food trucks will be on site, and be sure not to miss the ever popular Quick Carves and evening Fire Sculptures! Quick Carves will be held Friday through Sunday starting at 1pm. Vermont vs. Hollywood: 100 Years of Vermont in Film - Vermont has been a featured location in Hollywood movies for nearly a century. It has represented many different ideals during that time, and its portrayal reflects both Vermont's own history as well as American history. Examining those films provides interesting and fun insights into the hold Vermont has had on imagination in the media age.
