Boys Varsity Basketball- State Tournament Recap
The Arete Prep Boys Basketball team made their first state tournament appearance since '13-14 and advanced to the round of eight by beating #10 seed Superior 48-41. The Chargers were ice cold in the first half, making only 4 field goals and trailing the Panthers 19-9. Joey Patrick sparked a huge third quarter by knocking down three consecutive 3's. Sean Baker (6pts, 8 rebounds) set the tone on the defensive end, recording many of his career high and school record 9 blocks in the third quarter. The Chargers outscored the Panthers 22-6 in the decisive third. Toni Atologbe and Brennan Weir each made huge shots down the stretch to keep Arete in front. Eric Baker was clutch on the FT line late, and led the Chargers in scoring with 16. Patrick finished with 12.
In a quarterfinal matchup with The Gregory School (Tuscon), the Chargers were overwhelmed from the start, trailing 22-4 at the end of the 1st. The couldn't mount a comeback in this one, and lost 68-37. The loss ended a historic and successful season for Arete Prep. The full 1A bracket can be found here:
