Susquehanna National Heritage Area
Bill Re-Introduced!
On January 4th Congressman Lloyd Smucker re-introduced his bill to designate the Susquehanna National Heritage Area. H.R.262 is the same legislation that passed the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018 but not the Senate. The bill has already been co-sponsored by seven PA Members of Congress.
Susquehanna Heritage has championed National Heritage Area designation of Lancaster and York Counties for over a decade, with Senator Bob Casey sponsoring legislation every session of Congress since 2008. Approval of Rep. Smucker's new bill will boost visibility and tourism, create jobs, and secure National Park Service support for our region as America's 50th National Heritage Area.

Help bring this national honor to the Susquehanna - ask our legislators in Washington to support H.R.262. Now is the time to make your voice heard!

Zimmerman Center for Heritage Lecture
Jacob Dritt's Powder Horn
February 13th | 6:30 - 8:30 PM
What can we learn from a powder horn? On a chance visit to a Gettysburg antique shop, Dr. Christian Keller came across one that once belonged to Jacob Dritt, the most notable owner of the house the Zimmerman Center now occupies. Coincidentally, Jacob is also an ancestor of Dr. Keller. The find led Keller to search for the story behind it. Jacob served in the American Revolution as captain of a "flying camp" and was captured by the British Army during their assault on Fort Washington. As a prisoner, he faced the prospect of being held aboard one of the British Army's infamous prison ships. This talk will place Dritt's experiences within the greater context of what was happening in Pennsylvania and adjoining colonies during the early years of the War of Independence.  Come, examine this relic of the Revolution, and hear what Dr. Keller's search revealed.

Review Our Success - Looking Ahead
In the last three years, Susquehanna Heritage has focused on getting the river corridor visitor ready. Our 2015-2018 strategic plan focused on enhancing the river's special places and developing tourism efforts. We have advanced the Susquehanna Riverlands brand with a new website and a great map and guide for visitors. We have enhanced programming and activities at the Zimmerman Center and Columbia Crossing and expanded our relationship with the National Park Service.  Whether we are hosting hundreds of local kids for field trips or directing out-of-towners to a great restaurant, we are so grateful to be making a difference in our local communities. To all our partners, volunteers, and Friends of the River, THANK YOU! We couldn't make the river a better place without you!

Now it's on to the next chapter. Check out our 2018 Annual Report & Strategic Plan to see  last year's progress and our updated focus for the next three years.
