Oculus is an e-newsletter that is distributed by the OU Gibbs College of Architecture (GCA) during the fall and spring semesters. It features news about student, faculty, staff and alumni accomplishments, as well as events that may be of interest to our community. Note that there is a weekly version of the newsletter for a local audience, and a monthly version for a broader audience. Please share your news and events by noon each Friday to be considered for the following week's issue of Oculus.

Gibbs College of Architecture Career Fair to be held on Thurs., Feb. 21

When:  Thurs., Feb. 21, 3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
Where: Oklahoma Memorial Union ballroom
Registration: Students should pre-register and upload their portfolios (50 MB max.) at  https://ou.joinhandshake.com/. Firms can log in year-round, so it's beneficial to keep your profile and portfolio updated consistently.
 
Each year more than 30 firms attend the Gibbs CoA Career Fair, where they recruit skilled students from across the college.

Alumni Highlight: Avery Smith

This semester, we will be highlighting alumni from each of our seven disciplines. Recently, we talked to Avery Smith! Avery graduated from the Gibbs College of Architecture in 2018 with a degree in Interior Design and was a former communications intern for the college. Now, she is a designer at Gensler in Dallas. We picked her brain to learn more about her experience as a GCA student and what she has been up to since graduation.

Architecture Student Work on Display in Gould Hall

Second-year architecture students in Design Studio IV recently completed their Experiential Frameworks projects, now on display in the glass cases near the Gould Hall living room!

Students Participate in Workshops with Faculty from Cincinnati, Auburn

Last week, third year architecture students participated in design workshops led by Terry Boling, associate professor of practice at the University of Cincinnati, and Christian Dagg, Head of the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture at Auburn University. This experience was made possible with support from the Bruce Goff Chair of Creative Architecture and the Spring 2019 American School Presidential Dream Course.

Housing Education and Research Association Announces Call for Papers

The academic research journal of the Housing Education and Research Association, Housing and Society, has announced a call for papers for their special issue, "Social Justice and Housing." The special issue is guest edited by Marilyn Bruin, Professor at the University of Minnesota. Manuscript submissions are due June 15, 2019.

Regional + City Planning Professor to Lecture as Part of "Gender and Justice" Series on Feb. 20

Assistant Professor C. Aujean Lee has been invited to give a lecture for the Women's and Gender Studies Center for Social Justice as part of the "Gender and Justice Speaker Series." This lecture series was created to highlight the scholarship of women faculty members at OU. Dr. Lee will be sharing a presentation entitled "Gateway Metropolitans, Immigrant Neighborhoods: Impacts of Multi-Scale Racial Concentration on Neighborhood Foreclosure Risk."

Spring 2019 Undergraduate Research Day Accepting Applications Until Feb. 25

The Honors College is hosting Undergraduate Research Day, which allows both students whose research was funded through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program and students in general to present their research findings. All undergraduate students, including non-Honors students, are eligible and encouraged to submit applications!

All students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend this moderated book discussion of Robin DiAngelo's White Fragility in the JJ Rhyne room of Zarrow Hall from 4:30-5:45, Feb. 28. This event is co-sponsored by the Max and Heidi Berry Chair in International Studies, the OU Office of University Community, and the College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Linguistics. 2019 Travel Study: "Modern & Historic Gardens of Western Europe"

Study Abroad in Italy with "Gardens of Knowledge and Delight" Program

Students who participate in the Summer 2019 "Gardens of Knowledge and Delight" Program are invited to walk the historic botanical gardens of Italy, and learn the foundations of natural history and science with Bruce Hoagland, biogeographer. They will also experience splendid Renaissance villa gardens with Tom Woodfin, landscape architect and garden historian. Together, they will learn the history of beloved places whose beauty, plant collections, and structure continue to inspire scientists and artists

Fast Facts
  • The class is based in Arezzo, Italy, and runs from July 8 - August 2, 2019
  • Students can earn six credit hours in two courses: GEOG 3253, Environmental Conservation, and LA 4743, Garden History
  • Deposits are due Feb. 24, 2019
