Gateway Celebrates 31 Years Of Service With Gala

Gateway Community Action Partnership celebrated 31 years of serving the community with a Gala at the Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa on Nov. 8.
The evening included a cocktail hour, dinner, awards and music and dancing. Frank Messina, from AllRisk, was the Gala chairman and served as the emcee. The event also featured remarks from John Washington, Gateway Board Chairman; Albert B. Kelly, Gateway President and CEO; and Edward Bethea, Gateway's Executive Vice President and COO. Board member Ruby Love gave the invocation and benediction.
"Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to celebrate another year," Kelly said. "It means a lot to me to celebrate with my staff that works so hard. As board chairman John Washington said, I truly believe we have the finest Community Action Agency in the country.
"You may not be aware of this, but there are 1,200 Community Action Agencies around the country, and I have been on the national board and I have been to many other agencies around the country, and there is no agency that compares to the one we have right here. So employees, give yourselves a round of applause. Thank you to everyone for being here. Thank you to all our sponsors. We appreciate your support."
TD Charitable Foundation and OceanFirst Foundation each received the Samuel H. Jones, Jr. Community Development Award. Sysco Food Services received the Dr. Frank D. Brigio Memorial Spirit of Community Award. Gateway Staff Spotlight: Diana Butkus
|
Name: Diana Butkus
Position: Group Teacher Williamstown
How long at Gateway: 8 years at Camden County Head Start and 6 Years with Gateway Head Start
Recent accomplishment: In the 2017-18 school year, Diana Butkus submitted three Donors Choose projects which were fully funded. She is off to a great start this school year. She submitted one project on September 20 and her project was fully funded on September 24. She was the first teacher to submit a project and get it fully funded.
Diana was always doing things to enhance the children's learning. But she wanted more for her children's learning and environment. Through the four projects submitted through Donors Choose, Diana has managed to enhance Dramatic Play, Art, Science, Library, Manipulatives, Sand and Water and Blocks. She has received a total of $5,579 in furniture and materials to support education of the children in each of these centers.
What is most rewarding about your job: Seeing the children learn and grow both educationally and socially.
Tell us something about yourself: I've been married for almost 15 years.
Hopes, Dreams, Ambitions: My hope is that my son never relapses. My dream is that my children become self-supporting, successful adults.

The Upsilon Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity recognized Gateway Community Action Partnership as its Citizen Group of the Year at its Jazz Luncheon in Atlantic City on November 10.
Edward Bethea, Gateway's Executive VP and COO, accepted the award on behalf of Gateway.

Foster Grandparents Are "Superheroes" To The Children In Atlantic County

Natalia Uribe, the Foster Grandparent Lead Director, shared photos of the Foster Grandparents in Atlantic County at various centers. The Foster Grandparents have had a tremendous impact upon the children.

Gateway Head Start Early Education Center Doing Great Things For Families
|
The Gateway Head Start Early Education Center in Atlantic City had several fun and informative activities for families in November.
At the monthly parent meeting on Nov. 16, a Thanksgiving Meal In A Box was raffled off to one of the lucky parents. The meal was donated by center staff.
Also, parents of children who had perfect attendance in November were given certificates noting that accomplishment. The center staff also treated the parents to lunch for the Thanksgiving holiday. The center also had guest speakers from Atlantic Cape Community College and Ideal institute of Technology come talk to our parents about great programs and the fantastic opportunities that are available.

Internet Essentials
, a program offered by Comcast, gives income-eligible families access to the Internet for $9.95 a month with no activation fee, equipment fees or price increases. Having the Internet enables children to do homework, type reports or do research and enables the parents to e-mail teachers as well as look for jobs, pay bills or find doctors.
Gateway Community Action Partnership is working with Comcast to inform families of the program. Internet Essentials is available to households that have children eligible to participate in the National School Lunch Program or if they receive HUD housing assistance. They must reside in a Comcast service area and must not have subscribed to Comcast Internet in the last 90 days or have overdue Comcast bills. Also, low-cost computers are being offered for $149.99 and free training is accessible if needed. To get more information or to sign up, visit www.internetessentials.com or call 1-855-846-8376. ... Gateway operates the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants & Children (WIC) in Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic and Salem counties. The program provides supplemental foods, nutrition education, lactation support, immunization education and health care referrals to income-eligible pregnant women, new mothers, infants and children up to age 5. Gateway WIC serves more than 23,000 clients annually through flexible hours through its eight (8) offices and a full-service, health screening mobile office. WIC is an equal opportunity program.
