Catholic Schools Week a celebration of who we are
|
Catholic Schools provide a place for students to learn, serve, lead, and succeed. And Catholic Schools Week is a week to celebrate all of those things. Those elements are tied into the theme days for the week, with students demonstrating what they've learned with trivia contests. Students were encouraged on Tuesday to lead by example by doing an act of kindness.Today, we prayed with an all-school liturgy. Tomorrow, we celebrate our success with an assembly to view each class's Blue Pride videos.
Each class was tasked with creating a video that showed all the ways they've witnessed and participated in Blue Pride. The winning class will receive two weeks of free Spirit Wear Days. Another way the classes can win free Spirit Wear is through the hallway decorating contest, in which the class chose a decade and decorated their hallway in that theme.
At the liturgy today, Spanish teacher Mr. Alan Mathews '88 received the Saint Theodora Excellence in Education award for his excellence in the classroom and the community. He is one of six finalists for the archdiocesan award. More information on Mr. Mathews will be in the next issue.
The students also are participating in the traditional Penny War, in which coins and dollar bills are used to raise money for the WHAS Crusade for Children. Students can earn points for their class by donating pennies, dollar bills, or checks, and they can take away points for other classes by putting silver coins in their jars. The competition gets heated as the week goes on, but so far the juniors are ahead with just over 9,300 points. The Penny War ends after the last lunch session on
Friday.

Bowling postseason ends at regional
Sophomore Andrew Gaines represented the Providence Bowling Club as part of the Southern Hills Bowling Conference at the Bloomington Regional last weekend. After a slow starting round, he finished 28th in the singles category.
Homecoming king and queen crowned
Congratulations to Homecoming King Hayden Burke and Queen Grace Hublar, as voted on by the student body. The king and queen were crowned at the Boys Basketball game last Friday.
We also thank our students, faculty and staff who donated money last week to wear various colors to represent different organizations that fund research for colon cancer, diabetes, childhood cancer, and chiari brain malformation. They raised more than $1,600 for these organizations.
Freaky Friday tickets go on sale tomorrow
This year's spring musical will be a popular one, with Providence the first local school to produce Disney's Freaky Friday. Tickets to the musical go on sale tomorrow, Feb. 1. Patrons can purchase tickets on the Providence website - look for the Buy Tickets icon on the home page - or by calling 812.945.2538 ext. 301. Tickets are $15, and student tickets up to eighth grade are $8. Students tickets may only be ordered via phone or at the box office.
Seniors earn First Honors
Seniors Jacqueline Scott and Joseph Gryboski have been recognized in a recent issue of Business First of Louisville in the "First Honors" section. They are among the top seniors in the Class of 2019 and were nominated based on their academic achievement as well as leadership and extracurricular involvement.
Quick Recall wraps up season
The JV and varsity Quick Recall teams concluded their season earlier this month. The JV team had 4-7 record, including wins over Mercy Academy, Holy Cross High School, and Christian Academy of Louisville. In the final tournament, the team earned a No. 8 seed and won the first round by default when Mercy forfeited. The team then lost to undefeated St X High School. Team members included sophomores Kieran Kelly, Marcus Fuson, Monica Nokes, Brooklyn Stocksdale, and Cai Celestin, and freshmen Jack Kaiser, Dallas Bonnet, Zach Applewhite, and Zach Van Wie.
The varsity team ended with a 3-7 record with wins over DeSales High School, Mercy and Assumption High School. The team earned a No. 8 seed in the tournament and defeated DeSales in the first round but fell to Sacred Heart Academy, one of the best teams in the league, in the second round. Team members included seniors Ross Reyes, Adriel Nacpil, and Stephen Wilson, and juniors Logan Applewhite, Nolan Banet, Jacob Sullivan, Michael Morra, Shelby Wright, and Elle O'Bannon.
Science students take part in Youth Science Summit
Last week, several students from Honors Physics and ACP Physics attended the 2019 Southern Indiana Youth Science Summit sponsored by the Kentucky Science Center and held at Ivy Tech Community College. The students rotated through various activities and then took part in "speed mentoring," in which they spent eight minutes meeting with several people in STEM Careers.
Each group went through three or four stations, taking part in activities such as investigative anthropology, a medical simulation in which life-like models represented patients that could interact and be programmed with various illnesses, and a digital autopsy table that featured digitized autopsies from donated bodies on a huge smart board that resembled an autopsy table.
Students take part in No Shave January
Wondering why so many of the boys are sporting beards in photos this month? Several activities kept the annual fundraiser to benefit the Norton Cancer Institute from taking place in the traditional month of November. More than 20 boys and some teachers participated, raising about $200. The contest ends Friday. |

| Students attend March for Life with Deanery youth |
Earlier this month, several of our students were part of a group from the New Albany Deanery who traveled to Washington, D.C., to take part in the March for Life. Junior Elyse Kristiansen and senior Tyler Upton
are two who attended, and both said they were impacted by the experience, from the march itself to the rallies they attended. It was Elyse's first trip, and Tyler's second.

House of Integrity leaders: It feels good to win
|
House of Integrity co-senior executive delegates Jacqueline Scott and Haylee Hall are thrilled their House won the Second Quarter points competition, which will land them in the House Cup finals in the spring. It is the first time Integrity will appear in the House Cup since the competition began. Read more.

Sophomore joins his family in service to homeless
|
Sophomore
Eli Watson has come to appreciate the real gift of serving others by volunteering with his family to feed the homeless through Hip Hop Cares. Hip Hop Cares is a nonprofit organization
in Louisville that sets up at First Street and Broadway under the overpass on Sunday afternoons to provide food, drinks, toiletries, clothing, shoes, and more to those in need.

Mrs. Welch is now a student and a teacher
|
Mrs. Diana Welch is busy this school year balancing teaching, her family, and being a student herself. She is in her seventh year teaching science at Providence, and she is completing her master's in biology in order to continue teaching Advance College Project Biology. All teachers of college courses, including ACP classes, must have a master's degree in the subject they teach, according to a new requirement of the College Board.

Sports News: Postseason news, athlete recognition
|
Three teams start postseason
The Wrestling team will send four grapplers to regionals on Saturday. Junior Chase Aldridge was the 126 pound sectional champion, freshman Kaden Connin placed third in the 120 pound category, and seniors Noah Liter and Nathan Grantz each placed fourth, with Noah at 145 pounds and Nathan at 160. They will compete Saturday at 10 a.m. at Jeffersonville High School. Tickets are $7.
Girls Basketball starts sectional play tomorrow tonight when the Lady Pioneers face Eastern Pekin at Eastern Pekin at 6:00. Tickets are $6. The semifinals are Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and the finals are Monday, Feb. 4, at 7:00 p.m. The game times have been adjusted after being postponed due to the extreme weather yesterday.
The Girls Swim team will compete in the sectional preliminaries tonight at Highland Hills Middle School starting at 6 p.m. The Dive team will compete Saturday at 9 a.m., and the swimming sectional finals are Saturday at 1 p.m. Tickets are $6 per session or $10 for both sessions.
Girls Basketball player twice nominated for player of week
Junior Natalie Boesing was nominated as Courier Journal Southern Indiana Athlete of the Week for the weeks of Jan. 16 and Jan. 23. The newspaper recognized her four double-doubles during those two weeks, including 41 points and 11 rebounds in a 57-45 loss to Charlestown, and 28 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, and seven steals in the 62-36 win over Rock Creek.
Football player named to All Star team
Football player senior Kaden Williams was elected to the Indiana Football Coaches Association Region 10 All-Star team.
Boys Tennis players honored
Senior Carson Carrico was named to the News & Tribune All-Area First Team singles, and junior Harry Green and sophomore Landon Kruer were named to the Second Team doubles. In the Jan. 16 eVision, we failed to mention that Carson is a candidate for Courier Journal Player of the Year for Boys Tennis.

New freshmen registration next week
Registration conferences for incoming freshmen for the 2019-2020 school year will be in the Robinson Auditorium lobby on Monday, Feb. 4, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., according to last name. An online enrollment portion is required prior to the conferences.

The Second Quarter Honor Roll is now posted online line. Click here to view it.
No school on Feb. 18
Teachers and staff will be in professional development on Monday, Feb. 18; therefore, classes will not be in session unless the date is needed for snow make-up.
Reserve dates for snow make-up days
The first week of Spring Break, March 18-22, and Oaks Day, May 3, are reserved for snow make-up days, should they be needed. Please do not schedule vacations during these times.

Middle School Bowling League offered
|
The Southern Hills Conference, of which our Bowling Team is a member, is offering a Middle School Bowling League as an instructional league for fifth through eighth graders.
The League starts the week of Feb. 18, 2019, and ends the week of May 12, 2019. It is offered at Blackiston Bowl, located at 1516 Blackiston Mill Road, for $95, which includes sanction fee, a shirt, and all bowling and shoe rental fees.
There will be an informational meeting at Blackiston Bowl for bowlers and their parents on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 5:00 p.m., at which time they can enjoy one hour of free bowling and meet the coaches. |

'91 grad to teach at international Jazzercise event
|

Stacie (Fleshman) Barnes '91 fell in love with Jazzercise the first time she tried it more than 20 years ago, and now she is celebrating her 20th anniversary as a certified instructor along with the 50th anniversary of the fitness program. Barnes also is a Jazzercise franchise owner and will be part of the company's international celebration in June as an instructor for its East vs. West program. Read more. |

Be part of the STEM Career Expo
|
Providence is hosting a STEM Careers Expositional Fair on Feb. 21, from 2:00-4:30 p.m., and alumni in STEM careers are invited to participate. The Science Department is looking for 10 or more businesses to take part in order to provide information about how science, technology, engineering or math is part of their career. The expo will be attended by PHS science students as well as STEM Club students in grades kindergarten through eighth.
