The Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce Newsletter
Late Summer 2020 Newsletter
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hello Partners,
WELL we made it to phase 4 and then some! Your Chamber has been busy.  Helping to implement new programs and staying on top of incentives for our Chamber Partners.

Currently working on organizing a “Autumn Celebration’ activity to be scheduled for 3 Saturdays in October.  Having the costs unwritten and sponsored by the PJ BID and the Chamber hosting these single activities.   The objective of these efforts is to promote business for our partners, allow for a small fund raising capacity for the Chamber and to create a level of normalcy for our local community!

Good news, the Chamber is supporting PJ Village and the Port Jefferson Arts Council in a modified Dickens Festival.  As this year is the 25th Silver Anniversary the Village did not want to lose and cancel this traditional and long standing festival.  The scale down event will be spread out for 3 Saturdays in December, the 5th, 12th, & 19th. Stay tune for more details!  Unfortunately, our Santa Parade is canceled, but not to fear we WILL have an outdoor Santa for photo op.  Presented in a beautiful sled, socially distance queuing and no direct physical contact with Santa.  Children will be able to stand in front of the sled and have their photo taken with Santa in sled as a back drop!  Look for more details to come about the Chamber’s ‘cookieland’ during those 3 Saturdays as well!

We look forward to hosting our first physical outdoor general membership meeting under the tent of the Oldfield’s Restaurant for September 22nd at 8am. Masks required. Our Chamber has not met together since February!  The program is upbeat and we will be honoring 2 important supporters of the Chamber!

Be well and safe,

Thank you,

Mary Joy Pipe

Main Street.

Potential new restaurant opening in Port, stay tune for more info!!

Chamber was able to give away free masks and thermometers to any chamber member who requested them.  Thanks to the Town of Brookhaven-Supervisor Ed Romaine and the TOB’s Covid-19 Task Force, Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers and Congressman Lee Zeldin. There are still masks available!

Congratulations to our local artist and Chamber Partner, Jennifer Hannaford for getting one of here wonderful paintings on the front page of Dan’s August 21st Paper! How appropriate of a dog swimming!

Our successful raffle ended up bringing in $2,300 to help support the Chamber’s operational budget! There were GREAT prizes and we THANK ALL who purchased tickets!

Thank you to Rohan Singh who donated 30 3-D face masks and also cloth masks to the Chamber.  He started his own company March of 2020 ‘Good Karma Engineering Org’ has printed 3D masks, prosthetic hands and face shields.  Up & coming entrepreneur!  Graduating from PJ HS 2021 to continue his studies in engineering, sounds like a future Chamber Partner and entrepreneur!
WHAT HAS BEEN GOING ON!!!
Ok, so now that we are in this new culture-Pandemic Covid 19, you would think the Chamber would NOT be busy…au contraire!

We suspended the food delivery service at the end of July, leaving some monies available this fall incase other non-profits are in need and not sure where all things are going, but let’s hope we don’t need to help out again!  The Chamber helped out throughout this pandemic the following organizations: Infant Jesus Food Pantry, Pax, Christi, St. Charles & Mather Hospital, Maryhaven Center of Hope and Welcome Friends Soup Kitchen.

Through the supportive efforts of PSEG and the Chamber coordinating their grant program we had 4 Chamber partners who received ‘durable goods’ that helped to foster outdoor economic stimulus.   Those Chamber members are: Kilwins, Pasta Pasta, Arame Salon and Locals.  Purchases needed to go through the Chamber for then a complete reimbursement.  Chambers of Commerce and BIDS could have each received a total of $5,000 with this program.  Items that were purchase and approved were plantings, outdoor furniture, umbrellas and umbrella bases.

Back in February the Chamber presented to the BID a new mural program and got approval for funding and then covid-19 and everything stopped.  This pass July the program got reinstated and 2 projects were completed.  The objectives were to help graffiti hit areas, beautify our business districts and foster our artistic community.  Both projects used electrical utility boxes as the canvas and turned one into a salt water fish tank and the other is a ‘shark attack’.  One located behind Chase Bank and the other on E. Broadway between Ecolin Jewelry and the Steamroom.

In another initiative, Discover LI (our regional tourism organization) reached out to the Chamber as the only chosen Village in Suffolk County for their ‘Mural Tourism’ program.  In September look for a new mural being created in the alleyway right along the south wall of Salsa Salsa.  This ‘interactive’ mural will be of angle wings with interior components that represent iconic tourist destinations in Suffolk County and the Village of Port Jefferson.  We hope this program will help with an economic recovery to our Village, which is an essential downtown. Helping to drive resident foot traffic to visit our Village and engage with this new interactive mural.

Great 2 minute segment about PJ Village on News 12 played in a continuous loop at the top of the hour September 3rd.  Promoting ‘stay-vacations’ and day trips, narrated by their news reporter Elis DiStefano.  The Chamber helped to organize the interviews with Roger’s Frigate, Captain Fish, Celtic Quest.  Other businesses that were highlighted were Danfords, Toast and The Soap Box.
