NEW VENUE for CAM's Boy Scouts Building Connections Event!
|
|
Building Connections is the largest annual gathering of the construction community in Southeast Michigan, providing a unique opportunity for informal business and social interaction while supporting the Scouting program for area youth and their families.
In light of the recent Executive Order and limitations on indoor gatherings, the event is now scheduled to take place outside at the Dauch Scout Center in Detroit.
Join us under the tent! We will hold a virtual silent auction, serve gourmet food, provide bottled beverages, and of course, enjoy fellowship throughout the evening. This event will take place rain or shine. Be prepared!

Mixing business with fun is our goal! CAM is working closely with the venue to implement safety protocols and adhere to the recommended procedures for protecting attendees, as well as museum staff. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, CAM continues to update its Coronavirus: Info and Updates page. The latest updates come from Bodman PLC and cover preparedness and response plans for companies at various risk levels.
Read about other developments on new information becomes available, including toolbox talks and other training resources, as well as tax, unemployment and legal resources. You’ll also find a digital screening tool that meets health screening requirements. The tool, created by CAM-member company SPARK Business Works, requires no app to download.

ONLINE: Health Hazards in Construction – MTI Required
August 19th – 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
This course will help educate and make the construction manager/worker aware of typical occupational health hazards and potential health effects that are associated with the construction trade industry. Topics covered include lead, silica, cadmium, isocyanates, hexavalent chromium, and asbestos. Click here for more info and to register.
Mitigating Contract Risk
August 20th – 8:00 a.m.- 10:00 a.m.
Construction contracts often contain risk-shifting clauses that must either be negotiated out of the agreement or, if they cannot be negotiated, notes as an important requirement and followed by the project team. This class identifies the most common risk-shifting clauses and presents strategies for negotiating over, mitigating, and managing them. Click here for more info and to register.

This program provides an overview of the Focus Four Hazards in Construction. This program is designed only for awareness-level training. Developed using grant funding obtained through the MIOSHA-CET Grant program. MIOSHA is an agency withing the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). This course provides a thorough presentation of the principles used in Project Management. Participants receive instruction in effective management of projects to enable them to remain competitive and successful in today’s construction environment. ONLINE: Printreading for Residential & Light Commercial Construction
Starting September 14th – 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. (15 sessions)
Gain an understanding of shop prints, with emphasis placed on the interpretation of prints, performing mathematical computations, basic print terminology and sketching various views of pictorial and orthographic drawings. Plot plans, floor plans, elevations, sections, and details of all elements that make up a print will be presented. First Aid, AED, CPR - ONLINE
September 15th – 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
This course teaches the principles of basic life support for adults. The course details “hands-only” CPR, first aid, choking in adults, signs, and symptoms of heart attack and stroke, and treatment for shock. It explains how AEDs work, and why they’re a critical part of emergency cardiac care. Certification is valid for a period of two years. Click here for more info and to register.

Wolverine, Metallica Nonprofit Partner on Boots for a Cause
|
|
The Michigan-based footwear brand Wolverine, a brand of Rockford-based Wolverine Worldwide, has partnered with Metallica’s nonprofit, All Within My Hands (AWMH), to launch two pairs of boots with designs inspired by the rock band. All proceeds will go to provide 2021 scholarship funding to trade school students through AWMH.
Wolverine and AWMH’s partnership will benefit three U.S. community college trade programs — Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC), Lone Star College (Houston) and Wichita State University Tech (Wichita, Kansas). Each school will receive a $100,000 joint grant from Wolverine and Metallica Scholars — a major workforce education initiative that provides direct support to community colleges — as well as Wolverine boots to help students get started in their careers. Window + Door Presents: Innovation in Crisis Awards
|
|
Window + Door is using its annual awards program to recognize stories of innovation in a time of crisis from all corners of the fenestration market during the COVID-19 pandemic. Examples of innovation can include, but are not limited to, suppliers working to keep the chain intact, manufacturers producing essential goods, and dealers and installers providing essential services.
Companies are invited to submit entries by August 21. A team of judges from Window + Door and the National Glass Association will identify stand-out entries that display "Innovation in Crisis."

Final Rule to Protect Workers from Beryllium Exposure
|
|
The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration recently published a final rule revising the beryllium standard for general industry. The final rule adds a definition and revises definitions for five other terms, as well as amends requirements for “methods of compliance,” “personal protective clothing and equipment,” “hygiene areas and practices,” “housekeeping,” “medical surveillance,” “hazard communication,” and “recordkeeping.”
The rulemaking leaves the permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 0.2 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3) and short-term exposure limit (STEL) of 2.0 µg/m3 in place. The compliance date of this final standard as modified is September 14, 2020. Click here for more information.
