Lake Nona Middle School

There is no school on Monday, Feb. 18th due to the Presidents' Day holiday. Classes will resume as usual Tuesday morning.

Below you will find a few images from Friday's PTSA "Old School Dance." These pictures speak for themselves as our young Knights had a marvelous evening. A huge thank you to our wonderful PTSA for making this a reality along with the teachers, support staff, administrators, and volunteers that gave their time to help Friday evening. Once again, we experience the benefits of having such a pro-active PTSA at Lake Nona. On this page we often ask for support of the PTSA's Spirit Nights at local restaurants or other local businesses. When the community helps with those, a share of the sales gets channeled back for events like the Old School Dance party which mean a great deal to our school.

This week our Book Fair continues (below) in the media center. There are some excellent books and learning materials on display plus we have an online alternative - interactive book flyer.

Finally, congratulations to our boys and girls basketball teams on their victories last week. Both teams enjoyed wins in their games vs. Walker and South Creek. The regular season concludes next Wednesday away at Freedom. Go Knights!

Enjoy the holiday and I look forward to seeing everyone back at school Tuesday!

With Knight Pride,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

We still need 140 more parents to participate in the survey in order for us to have a response rate to analyze for use in our School Improvement Plan. Please, if you have a student at LNMS and have yet to take this short survey, kindly do so today. Thank you!

"Food for Thought" at Black History Month '19
  • Over 5,000 African-Americans fought with the colonial revolutionaries vs. the British
  • More than 200,000 African-Americans fought in the Civil War
  • Between the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and the ratification of the 13th Amendment in 1865, about four million slaves were freed.

Each spring on a special day, all Major League Baseball players, coaches, managers, and the umpires, wear #42 on their jerseys in memory of Jackie Robinson. In this picture, the Atlanta Braves are taking the field vs. the San Diego Padres in San Diego on a past Jackie Robinson Day. If you look closely, all players have the same number on their uniforms. Number 42 has also been retired for all Major League Baseball teams. This means that no future Major League Baseball player can wear it. Robinson died in 1972.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American military aviators in the United States Armed Forces. They flew close air fighter support for U.S. bombers vs. the Nazis in WWII in their P-51 Mustangs.

SSYRA Book Review
"Restart" by Gordon Korman
(Review provided by Goodreads.com)

Chase's memory just went out the window.

Chase doesn't remember falling off the roof. He doesn't remember hitting his head. He doesn't, in fact, remember anything. He wakes up in a hospital room and suddenly has to learn his whole life all over again . . . starting with his own name.

He knows he's Chase. But who is Chase? When he gets back to school, he sees that different kids have very different reactions to his return.

Some kids treat him like a hero. Some kids are clearly afraid of him.

One girl in particular is so angry with him that she pours her frozen yogurt on his head the first chance she gets.

Pretty soon, it's not only a question of who Chase is--it's a question of who he was . . . and who he's going to be.

Note from Ms. Powers: So far, this is my second favorite SSYRA book next to Ghost by Jason Reynolds. It's a great story that most middle schoolers can relate to. Seeing how Chase has to adapt to starting over with no memory and coming to the realization that he was a huge bully while trying to navigate middle school life in general is quite interesting. Definitely a page turner! Will Chase go back to his old self or turn a new leaf? Read it and find out!

Knight Rigor in the Classroom

6th Grade Science with Dr. Ali
In Dr. Ali's 6th grade science classroom, students were learning about muscle fatigue due to the buildup of lactic acid. Students used clothespins to exercise their finger muscles to measure their strength as they progressed through each trial. The students collected data on each trial proving their hypothesis that muscle fatigue limited body movement.

8th Grade Science with Mr. Kotowski
In Mr. Kotowski's 8th grade science classroom, students measured how heat  affected the rate of a chemical change.

Knight Partner in Education

Knight Sports

Basketball
Last Week's Recap / Regular Basketball Season Ends on Wednesday
Our last regular season home game for our Knights' basketball teams was this past Monday against Walker Middle School. We would like to give a big thank you to all of the parents, fans, and entire PE team for their help and support on making this special night a big success; one that our 8th graders will always remember. Both teams topped off this amazing night with two victories!

Boys Team
Lake Nona boys jumped on Walker early on, maintaining and holding a steady lead for the entire game. They ended up defeating Walker 56-35. The big game for our Knights came Wednesday, as we played an undefeated South Creek team. Both teams went into this game tied for first place in the division with undefeated records. Our gentlemen got a quick lead on South Creek early in the first quarter, but South Creek was not backing down. The score remained close at the end of the first quarter and mid-way through the second quarter, until Coach Ware put our best defender on their best player. The rest was history. Our boys expanded their lead in the third quarter and ended up winning 54-47.

Girls Team
Different to what our Lady Knights have been seeing all season, they faced a physical and aggressive Walker team. We got off to a very slow start as the score was only 16-6 at the end of the first half. However, our girls adjusted by coming back and playing their style of basketball the second half. They ended up winning the game 41-9 only allowing Walker to 3 points in two quarters. The Lady Knights also defeated South Creek on Wednesday remaining undefeated. These ladies have not allowed a single team to reach double digit points and in five games have only allowed a total of 27 points scored against them.

Congratulations to both of our teams on playing tremendous basketball! Keep up the good work! Last game of the regular season is Wednesday at Freedom Middle School. Boys tip off at 5pm followed by the girls.

Eighth Grade Players Recognized
Our 8th grade girls and boys basketball players were honored at our last home game at center court. We thank them for demonstrating leadership skills both on and off the court. Go Knights.

Knight Dance - Old School Party

PTSA sponsored their second school dance last Friday evening. Students enjoyed a DJ playing plenty of music to dance, the Fun Houses to venture in with friends, and Selfie Stops to take pictures of memories.

Local Business Support: Paramount Urgent Care

Paramount Urgent Care supports our school by issuing $10 vouchers to students who get school or sport physicals/immunizations at their locations. The students bring the vouchers back to LNMS and we redeem for $10 from Paramount. They pick-up the vouchers once a month and then issue us a check in return for supporting each other. Their contribution helps out our school tremendously!
