Dungeons, Sibling Rivalry and Who will Inherit the Throne from King Henry II of England? - The Lion in Winter, by James Goldman, is comedic in tone, and dramatic in action. The play tells the story of the Plantagenet family, who are locked in a free-for-all of competing ambitions to inherit a kingdom. The queen, and wealthiest woman in the world, Eleanor of Aquitaine, has been kept in prison since raising an army against her husband, King Henry II. Let out only for holidays, the play centers around the inner conflicts of the royal family as they fight over a kingdom.

Fauquier Community Theatre's local cast brings the story of The Lion in Winter to life with much wit and zest. Audiences will be intrigued by the complicated lives of King Henry II (played by Michael Mehaffey); Queen Eleanor, Henry's wife (Lisa Bailey); Richard Lionheart, the eldest son (Gregory Leggott); Geoffrey, the middle son (Justin Moreland); John, the youngest son (Richard Padilla); Philip, King of France (Stephen Hyland); and Alais, a French Princess (Kelsey Moran). Be ready for the inner conflicts of the royal family, as Queen Eleanor says, "Every family has its ups and downs".
The play appeals to several generations and has been coined by some as the "Original Game of Thrones". Others may remember the 1968 premiere. Fauquier Community Theatre's production of The Lion in Winter is directed by Charles DeLong who has successfully brought the cast together to bring the story alive with vibrancy and intrigue. He explains that the audience will travel back in time to 1183 and peek into the dysfunctional family lives of King Henry II, Queen Eleanor, Richard (later to be known as Richard the Lionhearted), John (soon to be King John of Robin Hood fame), and their middle son and brother, Geoffrey.

DeLong enthusiastically remarks, "The audience is given insights into these characters: their loves, their hates, their desires, their frustrations, their victories, as well as their resignations. What we witness is something relatable, something moving, and definitely something entertaining."

Co-Executive Director Christie Clark who has worked at Fauquier Community Theatre for over 10 years, adds that "The show is fabulous! The set, the costumes, and the acting are all superb!" The audience also has had excellent feedback including a comment from Linda Stribling who posted on Facebook "Really enjoyed everything about this production. So happy to have experienced it!"

The Lion in Winter is sponsored by Centerview Title Group, and through special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. Co-Producers are Sheryl Solow and Brooke Lyn Clark. The nine performances of the play began January 25, 2019 and continue through February 10 at the Vint Hill Theater on the Green located at 4225 Aiken Drive, Warrenton. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 pm, and Sunday matinees at 2 pm. Tickets are $15 for students and seniors, and $17 for adults. As You Like It is one of Shakespeare's best loved comedies. The most recognizable line from the play begins "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances..." vocalizes the character Jaques in the play. In casting the show, Director Maggie Mumford sought people "who can sing, dance, or play a musical instrument because this is one of the most musical of Shakespeare's works" she excitedly remarks. The show is being produced by Don Richardson, a longtime volunteer with many years of experience at FCT both on stage and off stage.

When  Lerner and Loewe's My Fair Lady opened on Broadway, it collected six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, while the film version took home eight Oscars, including Best Picture. Based on George Bernard Shaw's play  Pygmalion, My Fair Lady is that rare musical by which all others are measured. The tale of a cockney flower girl transformed into an elegant lady features one of musical theatre's greatest scores, including: "Wouldn't It Be Loverly?", "With a Little Bit of Luck", "The Rain in Spain", "I Could Have Danced All Night", "On the Street Where You Live", "Get Me to the Church on Time", and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face". FCT's production of My Fair Lady is directed by Lucia Hanover, with music direction by Brianna Williamson, and choreographed by Jenn Perrius. The show is sponsored by Brookside Neighbors, produced by Amanda Gibson, and through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).

FCT SCHOLARSHIPS
FOR COLLEGE BOUND HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

Fauquier Community Theatre (FCT) offers financial scholarships for local high school seniors who desire to pursue further education in the theatre arts. With the help of an FCT scholarship, young aspiring actors, actresses, musicians, theatre technicians, and arts managers are aided in deferring the cost of higher education as they seek to acquire further training. All applications are reviewed by a committee and the college scholarship awards will be based on a rubric of scores that include grade point average, interest in a career in theatre, participation in Fauquier Community Theatre activites, other theater experience, short essay questions on the form, letters of recommendation, etc. Scholarships can range from $500 - $2500 per student. Recently FCT has awarded several $2500 scholarships to multiple students each year. Criteria: A college-bound senior with demonstrated abilities in the performing arts. DIRECTOR PROPOSALS OPEN FOR 2020 - 2021

director-items.jpg
Director proposals sought for the 2020 - 2021 Main Season. FCT's season typically consists of 6 productions: a "classic" musical, a "contemporary" musical, a "classic" drama, comedy or mystery, and a more contemporary non-musical as well. Then the December production is intended to be family-friendly and fun for the holidays.

Directors are also sought to work with FCT's youth program. Youth activities typically take place in June, July or August, however, workshops could be scheduled at any time of the year. FCT is seeking Director proposals for the June 2020 Youth Show and the Summer 2020 youth programs at this time.

If interested in directing a show at FCT for those seasons, click HERE for more information and to complete a new Director Proposal Form. (Submissions do not guarantee a directorship.)

Multiple proposals may be submitted. Understandably, not all positions required on the form may be in place at the time of submitting a proposal. Please be sure to mention any limitations as to time periods of unavailability to do a show. Please don't delay in responding - our Artistic Committee will need to make decisions about the 2020-2021 season before the end of 2019!
