Reuters featured an article highlighting the Media Literacy Week event they hosted with NAMLE in New York City. The event brought together students, educators, researchers and journalists to discuss the importance of media literacy in shaping how students can actively participate in the democratic process of voting and lessons learned from the 2018 midterm elections.

& News Literacy Week
The second Greek Media, Information & News Literacy Week, organized by the Media Literacy Institute and Journalists About Journalism in collaboration with the Peace Journalism Lab, will run from November 19-26. The week promotes the importance of MIL today, in the framework of formal, informal and lifelong learning, and focuses on information and misinformation issues, which are critical to defending democratic values and improving our daily lives.  [ read more

" I'm the founder of Weird Enough Productions, where we use comics and superheroes to teach middle and high school students how to have a healthy relationship with media. Most recently, I launched an online comic called The Uncommons. With my writing, and the amazing work of our illustrator, we're redefining what it means to be a hero, and rallying audiences behind messages of self love and agency. With The Uncommons, the intention was to create a story that was engaging and entertaining, but would also encourage audience members to think critically. " [ read more ]

PLURAL+ 2018 Film Festival
The screening of the PLURAL+ 2018 award-winning films will occur at the Paley Center for Media in New York on November 21st. This year PLURAL+ received 371 entries from 72 countries around the world, from which 28 films have been selected for awards. Young media makers will be attending the event to screen and discuss their videos on the topics of migration, cultural diversity, social inclusion and prevention of xenophobia.

Idea submissions are now being accepted for the 2019 Media & Learning Conference which will take place on June 5-6 in Leuven, Belgium. The Media & Learning Conference includes a range of themes and will combine formal and informal discussion opportunities along with presentations, demonstrations and hands-on workshop opportunities. Australia: Students Need School Libraries
In response to Australia's falling ranking in educational outcomes, a coalition of Australian school library associations formed to advocate nationally for the re-invigoration of school libraries. The coalition aims to spread the word about the importance of school libraries run by qualified staff, to work together to ensure that all children have access to quality school libraries, and to empower children with knowledge and skills that equip them with a confidence in digital and information literacy. Arizona State University's News Co/Lab has compiled a "cookbook" of best practices to improve the quality of news and help the public better understand how news works. This downloadable PDF includes top educational programs that can be implemented fairly simply with existing resources as well as programs that require heavier lifting.
