A Message From the Executive Director
Earlier today, President Trump declared a National Emergency in order to secure $8 billion in funding for the proposed border wall at our southern boundaries.
NASW-NJ does not believe this situation warrants a declaration of National Emergency and was rather designed to focus attention on an imagined enemy. The true emergency is not in the number of individuals and families seeking asylum at our southern border, or their desire to flee to the United States. It is the humanitarian crisis experienced by these people that includes harmful policies such as child-parent separations, mass detentions, and immigration raids. These actions are antithetical to social work values.
As social workers, we do not turn our backs on those suffering and in need; we extend a hand in aid. As social workers, we do not erect barriers to separate ourselves from those who need our aid; we topple barriers to ensure interconnectedness, because therein lies the solution to our struggles. As social workers, we recognize the labeling of asylum-seekers as "an invasion" and the conflation of all Latin-American migrants with criminality, gang violence, and the illicit drug trade to be shameful; we know it is a tactic designed to breed fear and create an "us vs. them" attitude.
There is much work that needs to be done to alleviate the situation at our border. We need smart, humanitarian policies to meet the needs of asylees, refugees, and other immigrants. We need resources to provide for all families in need.
Imagine the good that could be done with $8 billion dollars in dedicated aid not only for asylum seekers, but for American families experiencing poverty, unemployment, disability, chronic illness and other challenges. In light of the needs of so many, the use of billions upon billions of dollars to construct a border wall represents a misappropriation of resources and will lead to further human rights abuse.
Tell Congress to intervene to stop this resolution and prevent the misappropriation of funds.

This week's Black History Month profile remembers
Frances (Fannie) Barrier Williams .
Ms. Williams was an educator, political activist, and women's rights advocate who worked for advancement opportunities of African Americans. She called especially for social and educational reforms to improve the plight of black women in the Southern States of the U.S.
As a social activist and orator, Williams spoke out on the discrimination towards both black men and women. She wrote extensively on the current position and potential progression of African Americans in education, religion, and employment. Many of her writings were published in The New Woman of Color: The Collected Writings of Fannie Barrier Williams, 1893-1918.

New CE Requirement on Prescription Opioids
We know that there have been a lot of questions about the new 1-hour prescription opioid CE requirement for social workers. Though it is not yet posted on the Board of Social Work Examiners site, it is part of a state law (that's why you won't see it in the Regulations themselves) that was adopted by the BSWE. This will be required for you to complete each licensing cycle, so you have time!

Harriet Bloomfield Scholarship: Apply Now
Application Deadline April 13
 The Harriet Bloomfield Scholarship Fund is dedicated to the memory of pioneer Social Worker and charter member of NASW, Harriet Bloomfield. Ms. Bloomfield served her community in New Jersey in a variety of roles including work in the Department of Youth and Family Services, Bonnie Brae, and the Elizabeth Board of Education. She was deeply committed to educating the next generation of social workers and taught at Kean College and Rutgers University.
Student members of NASW who have been accepted into or are enrolled in an accredited BSW or MSW program for the 2019-2020 Academic Year are encouraged to apply. For more information and application instructions

NASW-NJ Health Care Shared Interest Group Relaunches
First Meeting Will be Held on March 19
After years of operating as an independent entity, our sister organization, the NJ Association for Health Care Social Workers (NJAHCSW), has decided to close its doors. Rest assured, though, this is not the end of their efforts. We're happy to share that the members of NJAHCSW will be reconvening as the NASW-NJ Health Care Shared Interest Group (SIG).
The new NASW-NJ Health Care SIG will hold its first meeting on March 19, from 6:00 - 7:30pm at the NASW-NJ Chapter Office. If you're a social worker in the health care field or are interested in health care related issues, consider joining the inaugural meeting, network with other health care social work professionals, and learn about the SIG's future plans. Attendance is free and new members are welcome!!!

New Medicare Cards Have Been Mailed
The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services
(CMS) has
removed Social Security Numbers from Medicare cards to prevent fraud and fight identity theft. The new Medicare cards include a new unique, randomly assigned number called a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI). They have
finished
mailing the new Medicare cards to beneficiaries. If your clients haven't received theirs, it's time to follow up.

Internal Family Systems
(2 Clinical CEUs)
Date: February 26, from 6:30-8:30pm
Location: Brandywine Living in Watchung
Connie Seligman, LCSW, will introduce Internal Family Systems therapy and discuss and elaborate the major concepts of this model. A guided meditation will be used to demonstrate one of the concepts. She will then show how the key points are used in a story illustrated with a playful power point. An optional experiential exercise will follow the talk.

3-Day Clinical Supervision Course
(20 CEUs)
These courses are for those who have held their LCSW for at least 3 years and who wish to supervise LSWs seeking their clinical hours. The course meets the NJ BSWE requirement for 20 continuing education credits related to supervision, and also includes 5 Ethics and 3 Social/Cultural Competence CEUs. This course is held at our NASW office in North Brunswick.
Cost: $350 for NASW members, $425 for non-members
