News & Notes
Thank you to all Halloween Party volunteers
The PA Committee would like to thank all of the individuals who participated in the planning and execution of the 2018 Annual Halloween Party last Saturday, October 27. A spooktactular time was had by all, especially DCD third grader Avery Ouellette (pictured above holding the jar) who was the lucky winner of the Halloween Jar Counting Contest. Avery's guess of 84 came closest out of many entries to the actual number of prizes (21) and pieces of candy (64) in the jar!

We had more than 45 parent volunteers and 13 middle school volunteers this year, a record number! Special thanks go to the DCD staff (Phil Holden, Carl Abrahamson, Michelle Salfity, and Bob LeGendre) and the planning committee (Jessica Sawyer, Cindy Martinez, Alix O'Connell, Lauren Gogolak, Amy Starmer, and Michelle Knight) who played particularly instrumental roles in ensuring the success of this year's event. Thank you to all!   Click on this link to see the full list of volunteers.
"Beyond Calming Down: Helping Families Interrupt the Worry Cycle," a presentation by Lynn Lyons, will take place in the Lowell Center on November 8, at 6:30 p.m. Mark your calendars and register here to reserve your spot, and be sure to visit the DCD Connects page on our website to get a preview of the programs planned for the remainder of the year by clicking here. Halloween Candy Drive Runs Through Next Week
Don't eat that leftover candy from Halloween! Instead, donate it to a good cause. DCD will be collecting candy through November 8, to benefit U.S. troops serving overseas. Candy along with handwritten notes and cards can be dropped off in the bins located in the camp office. These sweet treats along with handwritten messages are a reminder of home for these soldiers and a reflection of our gratitude. The packages, which also contain oral hygiene supplies, are sent to soldiers via the nonprofit organization  CarePacks .  Please note: Candy must be in its original wrapper.

Go Red Sox!
This is a post from my archives that seemed appropriate to share this week. This picture book biography is one of the nominees for the 2019 MA Children's Book Award.

Ramón is the biggest reason
I have gotten where I am.
He is the great one in this family.
I am still Ramón's little brother.
-Pedro Martínez, 1998

Matt Tavares shares an inspirational story in  Growing Up Pedro (Candlewick Press, 2015). Pedro Martínez got his first real baseball glove when his older brother, Ramón, signed a contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers for five thousand dollars. The Martínez family lived in the village of Manoguayabo in the Dominican Republic, and Ramón was the baseball star of the family. Ramón told Pedro stories of his struggles in the United States because he couldn't speak much English. Pedro began to study English, and when he was eventually given a shot in the Dodgers' minor-league system, he could be interviewed without an interpreter.
