Support our seniors!
As Langley parents, one thing we all have in common is a
trip to Constitution Hall with our senior for graduation. For underclassman parents, it may seem light years away, but I can assure you,
the four years in high school fly by quickly.
Why do I mention this? Because as Langley parents, we have several great opportunities to
pay it forward to our current seniors, with the understanding that the classes that follow
will support your senior in the future.
The Capitol Steps, an acclaimed political satire group that has been selling out shows in DC for 30 years,
will perform at LHS on February 10. Proceeds from this event support
All Night Grad Party, which provides a fabulous senior celebration in a safe, drug- and alcohol-free environment. So, of course, the fundraiser goes to a great cause, and it also provides a hilarious evening out in your very own Langley Auditorium. You can always
purchase an extra ticket or two for a favorite teacher or for the PTSA teacher raffle!
Imagine 500 seniors spending a day
learning and practicing ethical decision-making.
Langley Ethics Day is an annual event where our seniors
serve as jury in a mock trial and debate the allocation of an antidote in the case of a global epidemic, among other activities. Held off campus, with programming facilitated by professionals in their fields,
Ethics Day requires 65 non-senior parent volunteers to serve as table leaders. Once you’ve spent a day with our seniors, you‘ll want to come back annually to help with this fantastic event.
Lastly,
Baccalaureate 2019 will be held on June 2 in Langley Hall
and offers an opportunity for our seniors to celebrate their accomplishments and share a meaningful evening with
personal performance and reflection. Senior parents,
encourage your student to attend and participate, and consider supporting this
community-sponsored event.
More info about all this can be found below in this issue. Let’s help
build our Langley community through support of these upcoming events. Hope to see you there!

we can transform the courtyards
|
|
Buy a leaf -- or more -- for the
Courtyard Legacy Tree fundraiser!
Langley's PTSA is partnering with
Wheat's Landscaping to transform our three courtyards (now just concrete and patches of grass) into
verdant green spaces that will function as
outdoor classrooms. With your support,
opportunities for experiential learning -- in ecology, botany, geology, water testing, and more -- will abound!
To help raise funds for the project, you can
purchase a leaf to be engraved for the
Courtyard Legacy Tree -- and also
add
to
a
beautiful work of art that will "grow" in Langley's front entryway. It will serve as a permanent record of those who made generous courtyard gifts. Donating a leaf is a wonderful way to
leave a Langley legacy and to pay tribute to family, friends, teachers, businesses, pets, memories, and milestones.
|
|
Visit the
PTSA website for more information and to buy your leaf -- or maybe
leaves? One for each child!
Donate now so we can begin planting this spring! Questions? Email

All teens experience some amount of anxiety. But when temporary worries or fears interfere with daily life,
anxiety disorders are at play. How can our community recognize the signs of this mental health epidemic and what resources are available? The
Safe Community Coalition, in conjunction with the
Langley PTSA, is hosting a free showing of
Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety on
Thurs, Feb 28 at 7 pm in the Langley Auditorium. This documentary features students affected by anxiety, mental health professionals and
Olympian Michael Phelps in opening up the conversation around this topic.
Following the movie, a
panel discussion and Q&A session will provide further info. This event is
free and recommended for adults and students in
6th grade and up.
